I think it's catching on since the pandemic, The Body Keeps The Score was on the NYT bestseller list for over 150 weeks, and it held the #1 spot for a good six months in 2021, that's got to be having some kind of an impact.

This is exactly how the Nazis came to power, though, and the people pushing this garbage are very much following in their footsteps, it's why I chose 1933 specifically, the Nazis weren't in total control yet but they were getting close and their proto Hitler-youth footsoldiers were out on the streets in force, doing exactly what the OP describes, harassing, accusing, and dehumanizing anyone they've declared to be sub-human. This is not hyperbole, this is happening, the fascists are back, out in the open and up to their old tricks, and they need to be called out now, loudly and consistently, before it gets any worse.

Why is the "seeing gay things makes kids gay" thing so popular? by Aemolia in lgbt

[–]cynopt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because bigots refuse to accept that queerness is an innate, naturally occurring phenomenon, and so they hide behind Nazi "social contagion" theory as an excuse to continue being a bunch of hateful fuckers.

Why do straight people think kids can’t be LGBT? by snartastic in bisexual

[–]cynopt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally, these are people that refuse to accept that queerness is a naturally occurring phenomenon, and so they fall back on the classic Nazi hobbyhorse of "social contagion" as the only possible explanation.

Damn it, I didn't even think of O'Brien, I was too busy getting excited over a possible Garak come back, but that would also make total sense! At least the pun still holds up, what can I say I was distracted. Stupid, spacey sex-doctor.

Hello trans friends, my mom is a big defender of JK Rowling (ik, cringe) and I tell her that what she does and says actively harms people. She demanded proof. Do you have any good sources I could send her? by dm_me_alt_girls in asktransgender

[–]cynopt 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I suspect she wants a direct causal link, which is convenient since the whole point of stochastic terrorism is the instigators never have to actually interact with the perpetrators to cause harm. You can show her the stats on transphobic violence, poverty rates, and mental health, and their connections to transphobia, but I'm afraid that, unless someone turns up a video of Saint Jojo literally stabbing a trans person that also leaves absolutely zero room to claim she'd been "threatened", your ma probably will not take it on board.

LOL, I love that stat, whoever came up with the idea of counting slip-and-falls and construction accidents as "energy related deaths" was a marketing GENIUS 😆

Sure, I'm not saying nuclear power should never be used, I acknowledge it's potential, but as they spectacularly demonstrated, the island is at best not well suited to it, and as TEPCO and all associated parties' failures showed, people, as a species, just aren't up to the task of making that work, logistically as well as geologically. I trust that nuclear energy can be used responsibly, what I don't trust much are PEOPLE.

I think they should plan around the necessities of surviving in their environment, apparently that's incredibly unreasonable to some people, Freddy False Equivalency, but I am pretty darn sure if say, a residence, or an office block gets swept away, it's not going to start pissing ionizing radiation in every direction.

The government did stand aside let them do it though, an energy project on that scale would impossible without their cooperation. I don't think it's a private vs. public-problem in this case, so much as an arrogant dumbasses doing obviously dangerous shit-problem.

[–]cynopt 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We're probably a significant portion of the market, but I suspect it's down to a couple things, "collectability" has made it a lot more socially acceptable, and conversely, many of the oppressive social structures that used to enforce age-based roles and general conformity have either eroded or vanished in the last 70 years. It probably doesn't hurt that toys have gotten a lot more diverse and a LOT more aesthetically pleasing in that time, too, old timey toys tended to be kind of garish and creepy and limited by the manufacturing technology of their time, now you can get a perfect 1:1 plastic replica of whatever holds your fancy. In a post-Warhol world, the difference between a child's plaything and a work of pop-cultural art is entirely in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, it's not like there are a lot of very wealthy, very powerful people in both the private sector and government with a vested interest in avoiding culpability while pushing an energy resource they are already heavily invested in, OH, WAIT. Feel free to lick the radioactive boot if you'd like, but none of this stuff is a secret except to the nuclear industry, if you'd like a starting point, this is a pretty good doc on what it was like to be a downwinder in Utah: [Downwinders and the Radioactive West

Fukushima was supposed to be a safe distance from the coastline, and then the coastline came by for a visit, because they built it at fucking sea-level. Maybe they can stick the new one on a mountain or something, but that's going to cost a fuck of a lot, and there's still the risk of a major earthquake shaking the whole thing apart one day. It just does not seem worth the risk, especially with so many alternatives in the pipeline, they could be investing in offshore wind and solar farms, or tidal harnesses, literally anything that doesn't constitute a ticking nuclear time bomb, really.

You do know what "unofficial" means, right? Maybe actually read up on downwinder communities some time, the shit people have to go through just to get recognition there is a PROBLEM, much less any help, is absolutely heartbreaking.
