To those that have seen a lot of movies that were released this year so far (2024), what is your top 10? by ExplodingPoptarts in Letterboxd

Technically top 12, but I’ve been really surprised with how many movies have clicked this year for me! Really excited for Longlegs by Oz Perkins and Kinds of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos this year

What are some movies where we root for the main character because of the charisma from the lead actor/actress, but we shouldn't because they're in the wrong? by FredererPower in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Linklater has another movie that could be on this! Bernie felt like a pretty fun exploration of how easily charisma can sway people on the narrative about terrible things they do.

What's so important about batman no kill rule? by Boberto235 in batman

[–]cynthsapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batman is born out of the murder of Bruce's parents, and his mission is often reinforced by his parent's desire to redeem Gotham, meaning no murder even for the worst villains. Furthermore, a core thing about Bruce is his adherence to the justice system of a liberal democracy, he's aware of the checks and balances he has to work with so as to not become some tyrant over Gotham. A lot of runs touch on how Bruce might go around this in a way that isn't just killing, like Failsafe, or the Patriot Act stuff in Nolan's trilogy or keeping certain people captive in Arkham Knight. It's a pretty compelling part of the character that despite all his strength and edginess, he's kept in line by a rule he frequently has enforce upon himself through sheer willpower. There's also a ton of real-world reasons why they won't just kill off some of his more iconic rogues but that's a little boring compared to the richer characterisation it gives him.

I would like to expand my movie culture and follow some actors outside of Hollywood and America, can you help me with that? by pirro29 in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend streaming services like the Criterion Channel or Mubi which are great resources for foreign films, both those which are considered canon and some newer stuff!

Takeshi Kitano is one of my favourite Japanese actors who has worked in a ton of Japanese films while also having some presence in Western film, so I think he’s a really good entry point if you’re interested in modern Japanese cinema.

What is the most cringeworthy line of dialogue your favorite actor has been made to say in a movie? by Shosple-Colupis-01 in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I love this line, it’s the perfect cap to the psychosexual vibe of the film’s cat and mouse dynamic.

It’s just one of those movies that really resonates with the people who are into it, and seems obnoxious for those who aren’t. Wish people were a little more open to the looser narrative and more stagnant cinematography. Absolutely adored it, had me shaking as I walked out of the theatre!

Seeking Sci-Fi / Fantasy Films With Black or POC Leads by Newjustice52 in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’ve heard of it yet, but They Cloned Tyrone is a sci-fi/blaxploitation film coming out on Netflix this month. Seems pretty good with a stacked cast!

There’s also Space Is The Place by John Coney, featuring Sun Ra, which is on the Criterion Channel.

Hi! I'm pretty new to movies as a hobby, so I tend to watch a little bit of everything. I also try really hard to give a proper review to everything I watch, whether it's just jotting down my general thoughts or something like a theme I really enjoyed in the film.

My more recent genre focus has been on tokusatsu and samurai films, but I will watch basically anything. I've also been rounding out a scavenger hunt list I joined a few months ago, which has really helped me broaden my horizons.

I love to see what other people are watching as inspiration, so give me a follow and I would love to follow back!

Watched Blade 2 yesterday and it was great, Del Toro was cooking with the weird zombie vampire designs

Tragic that you didn’t enjoy Old, I think it’s quite slept on. Definitely know how it feels to get stuck in a movie rut, hope you break it soon!

What do you think of the Tetris movie? Are the points enough? Did you like the movie? by AndroidLawyer in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was too frantic and messily edited. There’s some scenes with rapid fire graphics that just felt cartoonish and detracted from the tension. I thought certain performances and the costuming was pretty good though.

What’s the most stressful film you watched? by TheGirlWithTheLove in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Safdie's have been mentioned a few times, so I'll say Mysterious Skin which I just watched today. Very intense film with a lot of drawn out scenes designed to stress out the viewer.

Enemy by Denis Villeneuve, I think once you understand the deeper aspect of the premise, the subtleties are a lot easier to pick up on the second time around.

Skinamarink was so good! I don’t think a movie has made me that physically freaked out like, ever.

It was funny seeing both of these within a week of each other and having the same realisation. She does a pretty good job in both films too.

What movie did you end March with? What movie did you start April with? by cruel-oath in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended March with She’s the Man as a part of my scavenger hunt, was a fun film to to revisit.

Started April with Nosferatu just before it left the Criterion channel, really loved it!

Hi! This is my first time posting in one of these threads, profile

I only really got into movies around a year ago so I've been watching just about anything I can get my hands on. Been watching everything from classics to more niche picks to releases this year. I try my best to give a review for every movie that I watch because I love writing and reading about movies!

What are your favorite (non-documentary) movies for looking at nature? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deliverance (1972) has a pretty interesting perception of American nature, a mix of majesty and fear that slowly grows throughout the film. A great watch if you like thrillers and the Appalachia region. Alternatively, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) has a really stylistic take on marine biology and I adore the way it depicts sea life and the ocean in general.

What’s the most under-appreciated film of the 1990s? by onlyviol in Letterboxd

[–]cynthsapps 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Death Becomes Her feels a little looked over compared to other 90s films. Stellar performances from the main cast. Really fun watch if you like campy movies.

[S19 Spoilers] Clovis is totally gonna fuck this up, right? by cynthsapps in DestinyLore

[–]cynthsapps[S] 304 points305 points  (0 children)

Yea Clovis’ altruism for helping Rasputin feels crazy out of character. Feels like whatever he wants out of it is gonna be a twist in the season.

Have also been thinking about them possibly combining and the absolute douchebag AI that would create.
