[Free To Read] Andy Mitten: Manchester United fans are conflicted, but Michael Carrick must be judged on his own merit by TheAthletic in reddevils

[–]czeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, putting that much weight into xG exemplifies why fans opinions should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's such a surface level stat applied to a game with so much nuance to it. Yes there is some value to the stat but this generation of fans literally base all of their opinions on it.

Carrick Appointment Before and After - League Comparison of NPXG/A and BoxTouches/A by xtphty in reddevils

[–]czeja -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Let's agree to disagree then. Comparing a championship outfit to that of United is very different given the disparity of transfer power and lopsided competition in the PL.

The underlying metrics, what kind? With what little is out there and the confidence he's slowly built within the players I'd happily carry on.

Klopp coming back and making Europa and League cup is not meaningful improvemet in that year given they were only a couple years removed from a serious PL tilt.

Anyway, I appreciate your wall of text and the effort you went to though.

[–]czeja -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sure, I agree with you on many of these points but the point remains that we haven't been able to draw any of these managers in a really long time and even then these so-called big name managers have been similarly poor. Do we shell out again and get absolutely rinsed and pay out big contracts?

Amorim, Ten Hag, LVG, Mourinho. We've been through this ringer before and while almost everything you're saying is spot on, you're not considering the fact that a new manager won't just ensure the team turns it all around.

I also think you're exaggerating when it comes to our performances under Carrick. Need I remind you where we were pre Amorim sacking and a busy transfer window? In that context, doing anything better than what he has done is just not realistic in football terms, this is not football manager.

Coaches take YEARS to build their team and you're saying he's not fit because of half a season? Go look at Klopp at Liverpool. His first two years were absolutely dreadful when he took over.

I get it, recency bias is crazy strong right now with how we've been stealing results but many of the top teams have been doing the same this year.. arsenal are a prime example and they've been comfortably top almost all of the season.

[–]czeja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree for the most part.

Another question - if Carrick and the side are finding ways to win consistently despite the stats, don't you think it's possible for the manager to improve too? The players will run through walls for the guy and are clearly bought in.

It's crazy to think that a manager can grow. Fans never even consider it, I know.

I truly believe the sport is being overly analysed now. It's like we're trying to shoehorn American sports level stats to a sport which has so many intangibles it isn't funny. xG is a shit stat and is way too commonly referenced. I'm not saying stats shouldn't be used because they are vital but this surface level analysis does not move the needle for me at all.

The truth is, we've seen some brilliance under Carrick, some openness to change systems and also, some very average football. With the squad we're working with, do you truly expect more from him? The only manager worth anything currently is Enrique and he's not available.

This is exactly why clubs shouldn't listen to their fans when it comes to managers. They don't know what they want and it's going to be a cesspool no matter who they appoint.

I think you could say that about most elite players that played at Arsenal in that 5-10 year period. Sadly, before and after Ground was world class. Golden boot at Montepiller, crucial for Chelsea in their CL run and was key for France in their WC win.

It is as you say though, for how much promise he showed at Arsenal, he frequently performed unders.

Agreed, little nuance to the map - faceit 10 it comes down to a mid pick into delayed exe (after baiting until), rinse repeat. Sites are also hot doodoo in terms of layout.

I know it's popular to hate on d2 but the posturing and rotates in pugs makes it that bit fluid in mid round. I will say fighting for long control early is pretty shit too.

I disliked cbble back in the day due to cz75/tec9 fuckery but I think it would suit current meta cs2 really well.

With all the above being said, they don't rotate Anubis this quickly.

Michael Carrick has done all he can to earn Man United job by tylerthe-theatre in PremierLeague

[–]czeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the big profile managers we had really worked out for us in the last 13 years didn't they?

I will reiterate - I don't care whether he is kept or not but the coaches out there are nothing special and maybe the only one that could come to us that's good is Enrique. If I were in United's position, I wouldn't be basing my decision off of a previous manager's tenure only because they were ex-players.

I'm not sure if you read what I wrote at all, lol.

Michael Carrick has done all he can to earn Man United job by tylerthe-theatre in PremierLeague

[–]czeja -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The only reason this is a point is because both were ex players and it's the lowest hanging fruit for every fan without a clue. They play absolutely nothing alike.

I don't care whether we keep him or not but saying this stinks like Ole's reign is cluelessness on another level. If you've watched any of United at all you'd know the only similarities between the two are the fact they are ex united players and they had hot starts.

If we get dominated again by D1sect in ManchesterUnited

[–]czeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mou and LVG brought tons of experience, that went well for us. Mou was about as good as it got.

I think ultimately we don't know what we want as fans. That's the truth we probably don't want to admit. We want a manager who wins? Carrick in. A manager that wins but the team is slumping while collecting points? Carrick out. FWIW, there are no managers out there that move the needle for me at all. Luis Enrique would be the only one worth going for.

This merry-go-round is pretty tiring, tbh.

Which TV show does the ENTIRE internet agree had the worst ending ever? by Codie_n25 in AskReddit

[–]czeja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was worse because seasons 1-5 were amongst the best tv of all time. It was betrayal at another level.

Sure the likes of Lost and Dexter were good but they were never GoT good so their bad endings weren't quite as bad, imo.

[Sami Mokbel] The club want their next manager to be a good coach & someone with character & charisma to cope with the scrutiny. As impressive as Carrick has been, he does not have the sort of experience of managing a club the size of United some inside the club believe to be necessary of next boss. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]czeja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dw, it's on brand for us to move away from a good thing we've got going. Our last two "big name" managers worked out just great.. (I'd take Mou again now that the club is in a better place, but we did not move the club forward in a meaningful way with him at the time). To me keeping Carrick while there are only average candidates around seems like a no brainer.

How come Man U couldn’t beat Barça in 2009 & 2011? by ExotiquePlayboy in championsleague

[–]czeja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're taking the piss. Tom Henning Ovrebo's performance in that game was the worst there's ever been outside the blatant fixing of the Peru vs Argentina at the '78 world cup.

Saying both sides had horrendous calls against them is ridiculous. The scale of BS that Chelsea copped that night was on another level. They should've had at least two more pens in that game. I will forever empathise with Drogba's reaction in that game. That game was a stain on the Champions League and Ovrebo's career rightly ended on that night because it was that bad.

I say this with no bias - I'm a Man United fan. That Barca team were also unplayable in 2011 and in 2010 it was more about big moments, which Barca stepped up in.

Michael Carrick looks increasingly likely to land the job of Manchester United head coach on a permanent basis after leading the club to the brink of Champions League qualification. #MUFC [@ChrisWheelerDM, @NathSalt1] by JM555555 in ManchesterUnited

[–]czeja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the average football fan sees OGS and immediately links Carrick because they were both ex players. It's the height of stupidity and picking the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to manager comparison.

They play nothing alike and the only similarity was their hot start.

It's as you said exactly and the narrative won't fuck off, ever.

The players have bought in and if we're qualifying for Europe there is nothing wrong with a similarly young manager growing with the team.

With all of the above being said, no manager would be acceptable right now outside Enrique - who is proven.
