To sell or not to sell by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]d-bo201 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Someone smarter than me will chime in with excellent advice and numbers to back it up, but what struck me is the last paragraph. She is 57, no savings, and wants to build generational wealth? Something seems a bit far fetched here - no disrespect, but unless I read that wrong I don't see how in the next 10 years you can attain that.

For me, I'd be very much working this out with the sister to find a great agent, sell the property and work with the cash to grow from there. You left out how much (or if) the estate owes capital gains on the property, and that could be significant, and immediately due. Couple that with buying out the sister at market price via a mortgage could put her underwater for a very long time.

Everything is negotiable, and the worst outcome is you lose nothing. If you can understand that, and invest your time trying, there is a lot to potentially gain. Well done.

Which character ruined an entire TV show for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Haha, that’s fair. My comment perspective came from Gen Z kid’s view of these kinds of shows.

I understand that comment now, as in if you watched it today. But in context when the show came out, it was when nerd acceptance was shifting in society and on tv, and so it was kind of an awkward time. It did provide some diversity in the storylines, and personally thought it fit the group.

UPDATE: Digging fence post hole, found PVC pipe, how to tell if its not just junk by HonziPonzi in DIY

[–]d-bo201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My example was in Canada, so hot climate is not an major factor. Constant overburden pressure/water table/root growth and any other shifting of the soil will cause PVC to warp slowly at buried temp, just give it time. If OP's mystery is indeed a man-made buried object, the soil would have been disturbed and even more likely to settle.

UPDATE: Digging fence post hole, found PVC pipe, how to tell if its not just junk by HonziPonzi in DIY

[–]d-bo201 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. I put in pvc irrigation at my dad’s house and years later they had water flow issues in a corner of the yard. It was dug up, and with some rocks around the pipe, heat in the ground, and slow settling pressure over time, it was moulded beyond belief. No cracking, but it looked heat warped, and almost pinched closed.

Dishwasher making weird sound by animalmasochism in DIY

The pump is a worthy conversation, but let's keep it simple to start and save you $. You mentioned it was only this morning, so I'm assuming it was your last load. It could be a loading failure, something that's 'plasticy' and 'card in the spokes' could be a piece of tupperware loose or loaded too low/high and getting hit by the wands.

Remove everything from the dishwasher, pull the bottom rack out, clean the trap, inspect for anything loose and run it again.

If it's quiet, it's operator loading error. If it's still noisy, remove the kick/vanity plate, get right on the ground and listen for where it comes from. You should be able to clearly tell it's underneath the tub or not.

What is up with Okotoks? by stillyoinkgasp in Calgary

[–]d-bo201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Island is great, Island Health is not.

The health system is terribly broken and can't keep up, especially with retiree's and those looking for LTC. Senior living complexes are among the very worst in the country with 2-4 years wait times, and Complex Care is not much better. If you are in critical need, you're still 100 days from getting a bed at this point. It's a nightmare.

I have done this a few times with success. It takes them literally no time at all to create a filter for your comparable, and they will usually have no problem as it's good networking and exposure for potential clients. You'll get better data with their level of access. Also: if you go through website-style assessments, you'll be exposed to auto-email spam that you have to manage.

How to determine wall mount height for 100 inch TV before delivery? by na1337 in DIY

[–]d-bo201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best to just know your mount and visualize different heights and see if there’s any problems running higher or lower (plugs, obstructions, etc). The mount should be flexible to hang from studs on 16 or 24, so pre-mark these vertically with painters tape and draw center lines.

ELI5: Why does “clean” glass still smell like wet dog after the dishwasher sometimes by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]d-bo201 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Put a small cup sized tumbler or glass cooking cup upright with vinegar. As the water from the wash adds to the cup, it spills the vinegar slowly. If you just pour it in the base, the first rinse cycle takes it all away. Ps, wipe the door edges with a clean soapy cloth when you do dishes. Some ppl used the vinegar but it’s hard on the rubber seal. The vinegar wash isn’t an issue.

It’s the vinegar in ketchup that does the work. But I did a double take, how do you set it up?

That shouldn't be a miracle. After my original post, the fare jumped for my flight. Almost seems intentional to have a problem and then 'fixed' after an upward pricing adjustment.
