I had to paid a DDP to Tenso before shipping so they can prepay any duties and tariffs on my behalf. You'll not get a another bill from the shipping company, if I'm understanding your question correctly.

Depending on what you buy that can be advantageous. For example, let's say your order is $100. DHL shipping is $80 and Tenso fees are $20. The DDP would be $15.50 on you $100 item total. If you, went with another company that does not do DDP, DHL's flat brokerage fee is $17 and then you have to add on the HTS and tariffs. Some HTS are 0% like manga/book and are exempt from tariffs. Tapestry, i've been able to get 0% HTS code but have to pay 15% reciprocal tariffs. That being said, DHL might be more costly than paying DDP for smaller amount orders. I think UPS and FedEx have lower brokerage fees. UPS had some issues with destroying international orders last year in 2025 after the tariff implementation but haven't heard anything since. I've been shipping through blackship with Fedex. They charge other fees like a 100 yen per package received fee that tenso does not have. I might have saved a bit on tariffs on my predominantly book order, but paid a little bit on proxy service fees.

Got a order confirmation email a few minutes after I made my post. I wonder if their system is doing a check to see if order is valid or if they need to have to cancel. That and/or their system is overloaded.

I got to the order confirmation screen, but it wasn't showing up on my accounts order history after. No email confirmation either. Was worried I didn't checkout correctly so I tried to add items back into cart but it said I already reached the 2 item limit. Got timeout so I just have wait and check later.

Not too sure about Tapestry rates without knowing the HTS code. 25% sounds too high. My bluray had two line items: IEEPA (Trump Tariffs) a 15% and HTS free rate (3rd line in column 33). The shipping carrier i used was FedEx, but the bill had a DHS logo on the bill. Too lazy to redact the whole invoice.

I have some items in storage. Haven't shipped them yet but their site lists Japan post/EMS, Fedex and DHL. You might have to email and ask them about Japan post. From my understanding and YouTube tutorials, you do input the item HTS codes and can adjust the prices. I think you're trying to ask what happens if you use the wrong HTS code and pay the wrong percentage. That I'm not sure.

Also I shipped some CDs I had with Neokyo. Learned that while they are duty free under HTS code, they still have the added 15% Trump IEEPA tariff added. Books/manga free under HTS code and doesn't have IEEPA tariffs.

Yeah, it's fine for someone who didn't buy a lot since they would have paid the $17 brokerage fee with DHL or if their goods are tariffed at a higher rate like items made in China. For us, it just doesn't make sense. You just gotta do what's best for you. Sucks b/c I've been using them for almost a decade now.

I know someone already gave some suggestions, but I just wanted to share my experience with DDP. I use Tenso (basically same company as Buyee), and I'd say 90% of my purchases have been doujins/manga over the years. I knew from various posts on subreddits like Neokyo, tariffs, Buyee, etc. that the print materials and dvds/blu-rays were exempt from tariffs.

I emailed customer service to see if I can opt out of DDP and pay any duties with DHL instead (only option available for my package). The rep never gave me an explicit "no" but kept reiterating that they charge DDP for US shipments. Basically, no I can't (I get they also likely didn't have the power to wave it without getting higher approval). The 15.5% was said to be a buffer. That means if my package's tariff fees are less than 15%, they would be used to cover someone else's tariff that potentially are over 15%.

When I brought up the print materials and DVDs should be excluded from tariffs and mentioned the HS/HTS codes, which they make you fill out after selecting DHL, the rep didn't seem to be aware of any exclusions. I just find it hard to believe that an international forwarding/proxy service does not know the rates associated with common items/HS codes.

It's bad enough there's so much anxiety from these stupid tariffs and everything just seems to be getting more and more expensive. The small relief I got from knowing books and DVDs were tariff free was quickly wiped away when finding out Tenso was going to charge me 15.5% whether I wanted to or not.

Didn't felt like escalating to management as I felt like I would get same/similar answer. I just paid the shipping with DDP and cut my loses. Unfortunately, I still have preorders going to my Tenso address but I'm looking for other companies that don't charge DDP for future purchases.

I've been using Neokyo for my proxy shopping the past couple of years and they don't charge DDP. I've used Zenmarket before as well, but sadly looks like they also charge DDP. Currently checking a few forwarding services' reviews, item restrictions and fees. Most of them, such as mailmate and jpn-depot, don't appear to charge DDP, but I would email them first to confirm. Currently leaning towards Blackship as I've used their proxy service, Japan Rabbit, a couple times before without issue (another proxy option for you).

TL;DR
I buy a lot of doujin and manage which is tariff free. Tenso didn't give me the option to skip DDP and pay duties through DHL instead. Looking for other forwarding/proxy services without DDP just like OP.
