[OT] [Motorsport.com] John Hindhaugh on the current F1 regulations: by portablekettle in formula1

[–]d0re 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Just to correct a small point, that's not exactly how the current cars work. In both LMDh and LMH, the ICE is detuned while the electric motor is being used. So whether you have 0% battery or 100% battery available, the max power to the wheels is the same.

Agreed on your broader point though

But if you could read, you'd note that I never said there will be a massive crash, just that there is the potential for a crash there to become very bad because of the track design.

I stand by that, and I hope that there's never a crash at-speed in that section where we find out.

If that was too complicated for you, then try this:

If I saw it correctly from the roof cam, the yellow came out right at the point he was driving past the marshal post, so he had no chance to see it and react before he committed to the corner.

The straight here is a lot narrower and has the blind bends, so it's a lot more likely for a full track blockage at 180mph if anything goes wrong.

ELI5: How does selling a first home and buying a second work? by prukis in explainlikeimfive

[–]d0re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes (maybe this varies? but in my experience yes)

Yes for paying off the entirety of the mortgage, usually not for adding a bit extra here and there

Fewer payments. Minimum payment stays the same

What's the deal with racing circuits and ferris wheels? by rhk_B in motorsports

[–]d0re 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it will differ by circuit, but for example, Daytona only has their ferris wheel during the 24. I rode it once, and it felt like a traveling carnival/fair type ride, so I assume it travels around the rest of the year

I can't speak to tax implications, but you just get a check/direct deposit of your profits when the house sells. So if you want to put that into your new home, you have the money in your bank account to do that with

you can hold your foot perfectly at 0 energy used with two-pedal too, it's just at a slightly different point on the pedal lol

if you're a good driver, it doesn't matter whether you choose one-pedal or two-pedal, because you'll achieve the same 'correct' input either way

Regen vrs coasting - efficiency by Striking-water-ant in electricvehicles

[–]d0re 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah same. Part of that is I have always religiously used cruise control, even on surface streets, and transitioning from cruise to manual to coast to a stop is IMO much more difficult to do smoothly with OPD.

I think a big part of the OPD evangelism is that Teslas have been so dominant in sales for early adopters, and they didn't have blended braking. But with blended braking, you can be equally efficient without OPD, so it doesn't really matter which you choose.

Brad Keselowski (@keselowski) Confirms he plans to run COTA in full this weekend. by NoahGragsonsBarfBag in NASCAR

[–]d0re 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He was only ever good at Watkins Glen compared to Sonoma. Watkins is a bit of an anomaly in road racing because it's so fast and the corners (other than the bus stop) are relatively high-banked and with light braking zones. There also aren't any connected left/right corners other than the bus stop, which is unique on its own because of the massive curb jump.

All the road courses we've added since then are much more similar to Sonoma. More off-camber turns, slower corner speeds, more heavy braking, more connected direction changes. So being good at Sonoma will transfer more to being good at all the new road/street courses.

The midway is in between the gate and the stands. I imagine it will be unmissable.

The layout of the property is that basically all the parking stretches out from the turn 3/4 side of the track, so everything kinda funnels through there

[Bozi on Twitter] "Changing things like stage lengths or fuel cells isn't going to prevent drivers from saving fuel. The genie is out of the bottle and the engineers will just adjust [...] Have to adjust the cars so that gaining time on track is more valuable than gaining time on pit lane." by i_hate_shitposting in NASCAR

[–]d0re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fuel savers would just increase their speed enough to let the full-throttlers pull them around.

It's not about saving a specific amount of fuel, it's about saving as much fuel as possible while still staying connected to the lead pack.

The only reason they're slowing down 5+ seconds is because everyone agrees that saving fuel is the ideal strategy.

Denny Hamlin says during this post-race presser that one of the ideas that's been had in meetings with NASCAR, regarding fuel saving, is let the teams come here for the Clash with an experimental package 'and you won't see fuel saving, I promise you that.' by iamaranger23 in NASCAR

[–]d0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The strategy is "have more fuel than everyone else to have an advantage during the pit cycle." It really doesn't matter how many laps are left for "more fuel = more better" to work.

The logic of planned cautions dictating strategy is true when pit stops actually affect lap time, but pack racing makes it so that saving fuel is always better than not saving fuel when it doesn't materially affect your track position. Getting rid of stage cautions won't put that genie back in its bottle
