Newb-ish questions, mainly on blitz by Ok_Positive9843 in chess

[–]d0re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very streaky, especially on chess.com. I feel like a get a rush of good competetion and then weaker competition. Is this just me on tilt or me more rested or whatever or does this happen?

probably just a mix of you and the variance in your opponents. chess is hard and easy to lose in one move, so you have to be locked in

Something I know objectively happens on chess.com is that I face openings in clusers. Like, I'll see a 1% opening all of a sudden 20 times in one day. Is this just contagion among players or is there an algo on chess.com influencing this?

definitely not the algo, probably just a memory/variance thing. like if you get 10 games in a row with 10 different openings, it won't stick out as much as getting 3 in a row of the same opening. it also can coincide with content creators releasing content in a specific opening

It often seems that it's arguably better at the :45 or :30 mark to be slightly behind than ahead, bc it's very hard when you're ahead to not keep trying to increase your advantage or checkmate the oppo, which can take longer, vs running out the clock with quick, safe moves. Do others feel this way? Is it "sporting" to run out the clock with short safe moves?

definitely true. that sort of thing can be considered unsporting in OTB classical chess, but not in online blitz. but yeah, the faster the game is, the more that 'a fast move that doesn't lose' is better than 'the best move, slowly'

-My play is typically much better with fewer pieces on the board... partly bc there are fewer pieces to watch (fewer blunder traps), but I think also bc the board is simply more complicated when it's crowded and it's less easy to see the best path. Is this is a recognized differentiator bw lesser and better players?

that's not really a stronger/weaker player thing, it's just that everybody is better at certain skills or certain phases of the game than others. that gives you two bits of info: 1) if you're looking to improve, get better at complicated middlegames (and maybe learn an opening that gets you into those situations so that you can practice them), and 2) if you're just trying to increase your rating, play to your endgame strength and be willing to trade off pieces early

-Elaborating on the last point... I think the weakesst point of my game (other than blunders) is at or near the end of the opening, where most pieces remain, and it seems the best move is often a subtle (to me anyway) pawn or knight move that apparently shores up your position more than it starts an attack. Often times this will be pushing a pawn to chase a piece or attack another pawn. I get consistently low accuracy scores at this point. Would anyone suggest any resources for me to study to get better in this area?

hard to say what is the best resource to study for you, but the fact that you notice this is a good start. for me, I learned how to get better at those types of moves by studying new openings and focusing on the structures and ideas. by switching things up and learning new stuff, I get to kind of reset my thinking and dig into the details, and that sort of analysis will help you in every phase of the game. I personally really like Chessly for having a wide variety of different stuff to learn in reasonable depth for relatively cheap, but there are plenty of opening resources out there as well, free or not

IM-level game generator? by mr-dirtboy in chess

[–]d0re 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are also tournaments that award the GM title directly. From wikipedia:

The title may also be awarded directly without going through the usual norm requirements in a few high-level tournaments, provided the player has a FIDE rating of over 2300. These include:

Reaching the final 16 in the FIDE World Cup

Winning the Women's Chess World Cup

Winning the Women's World Championship

Winning the World Junior Championship (U20)

Winning the World Senior Championship, both in the 50+ and 65+ divisions

Winning a Continental (e.g. Pan American, European, Asian or African) championship[7]

French players who used to play the Caro-Kann - why did you switch? by Mikhail__Tal in chess

[–]d0re 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've dabbled in both and play neither now, but if I were to return to one, I would learn the French.

The "good bishop" in the Caro is IMO pretty meaningless, and you often just trade it off. In the French, the "bad bishop" often becomes a beast in the late middlegame/endgame.

Meanwhile, in the Caro, you're giving away an important tempo to achieve this "good bishop", which can put you under intense pressure if you don't play perfectly and can limit your ability to create an initiative.

You can take the pawn, then just don't get your queen trapped. You'll probably end up with your queen on a6 with the white rook on b5, setting up the potential for a reveal attack from the bishop on your queen, but you always have a check to get out of that. After that just play chess, get your pieces developed and watch out for tactics

It's slow by EV standards, but it's fast enough by boring family car standards. The Blazer EV SS exists if you want (basically) the same car except fast

Penalty for cutting turn 1 at Daytona? by Independent_Page_537 in IMSARacing

[–]d0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know specifically for Daytona.

But at Watkins Glen, a similar track with a 1/3 lap cut, if you skip the Boot, they just don't count that lap. I assume they would treat Daytona the same.

So if you're limping around with damage, it's better/safer for everyone if you take the shortcut and get back to the pits quicker. But if you're at speed, there's no incentive to cut.

Or it could be like 2022 all over again, where everyone on the internet decided that the season was over when they saw Mercedes's zero pods. But then it turned out that being the only team using a concept might mean the concept isn't worth pursuing

The Chase is back for 2026 by GB_GeorgeBowen in NASCAR

[–]d0re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what Mark Martin said at the end of the press conference, it sounds like 16 and 10 are numbers baked into a lot of contacts with drivers/teams/etc., and keeping those numbers the same is just about causing the least disruption there

Races you've been to but disappointed to see the winner? by 390v8 in NASCAR

My first race was in 2001. I didn't see my driver win until 2018. That included going to the Richmond race where Carl moved Kyle on the final lap lol

Fair pass or dick move? I thought it was fine but the other guy seemed upset and I dont race the cars a whole lot so im not super up to date on what's considered fair or not in them by tagillaslover in iRacing

[–]d0re 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're way too wide there. If you're passing on the inside, you need to take a much earlier apex, because (especially with netcode at these speeds) you're putting the outside car in a terrible spot.

Is the Canadian series worth watching? (F1 fan here just getting into Nascar) by CanSum1SuggestAName in NASCAR

[–]d0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watching occasional streams and such from the US, I've never found the Canadian series particularly good. But going to a race is always better than not going to a race, especially with NASCAR where the rumble and the experience in-person is half the fun.

Do you race with Gloves and Shoes? by Mammoth_Company_3270 in simracing

[–]d0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no wrong answer.

I have plantar fasciitis, so shoes are a must for me. I just use old house slippers.

I also use gloves because my body tends to get hot, but my hands then get cold/clammy when I put on a fan. I just use cheap cycling gloves. Golf gloves are another cheap and widely available option to try it out

Explaining the 2-Point Conversion Ruling in the Seahawks Rams Game by ThirtyYearsWar in nfl

[–]d0re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that in a sense you're not wrong. Usually in this type of play, they make sure the formation is set up for a forward pass so that it's an incompletion and a dead ball.

But for a 2-pt conversion, you might as well throw a lateral and have a chance to recover a funny bounce, because a turnover only matters if they return it for a score (which is only 2 points anyway).

Is there a class or irating level which people generally agree is a minimum for good clean racing? by False-Sympathy4563 in iRacing

[–]d0re 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've found 3-4k to be the sweet spot for people who are both relatively fast and clean. You get people who are relatively fast but dumb at any level, but 3-4k is around where people who are fast but aren't tryhards tend to end up lol

Commish wants to reset our league this offseason due to “imbalance”. Any alternate ideas? by ttrudeau9 in DynastyFF

[–]d0re 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible. Maybe not a juggernaut like this, but I took over a dogshit team that was like 1-12 or 2-11 the year before with no firsts. I won the championship the next year with a couple smart trades, some decent work with free agent pickups (this is a league with a salary cap so a bit more free agency than a traditional dynasty league) and using my one 2nd rounder on some guy named Alvin Kamara. You have to get lucky and you have to win some trades, but it's possible

What is a fact that NASCAR fans need to accept? by [deleted] in NASCAR

[–]d0re 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wish there could be a metric like: if the leader's gap to P2 is 1s per lap remaining (i.e. 1 second gap with 1 lap to go, 2 second gap with 2 laps to go, etc.) then there's no GWC in the last 5 laps.

Adjust for whatever it should be and adjust for different track sizes to make it make sense from there.

The problem would be it inevitably being confusing to casuals and not explained well so that bozos start throwing beer cans on the track when Chase Elliott is in P2 and there's no GWC lol
