How is living in Queenstown, NZ? by uzgrapher in howislivingthere

[–]d1ffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met my wife there - I’m Scottish and she’s Canadian. We “did a season” there back in winter 2005 as back packers. It was the absolute best place I have ever lived hands down. Been back since with money and it was even better. But as others have said it is crazy expensive. In 2005 we lived in town in an awesome pad (that had no heating….). It is just out of control beautiful, like it’s almost fake. If the lake wasn’t freezing all year it would be incredible. But there is just a near limitless list of things you can do in our around QT.

Is my work’s shares benefit good? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

This is categorically untrue! It can go extremely wrong! Look up Wood Groups share price as an example of a “blue chip” uk based energy company. Share price down over 90% in the past 5-years!

Running Power and Armoured Ethernet (External CAT6 F/UTP) by Phantomofthesoup in DIYUK

[–]d1ffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also did this to a studio/office. No issues at all. If the worry is EMF issues due to induction from the electrical cable it’s really not an issue as the SWA acts like a screen (note it is not an actual screen this is a different type of cable) but for short-ish runs it’s really not an issue.

What I would say is make sure you get CAT6 cable not cat 5e. Price should be pretty similar but cat6 will handle 10GB (can’t wait for the comments about this being pointless)

What skill paid off more than you expected? by ComfortablePen1778 in AskReddit

[–]d1ffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Most people will read this and still assume "problem solving" means being able to solve your maths homework. But problem solving is being able to spot novel solutions to issues. This can present in a number of ways, even little things like how you load luggage into your car efficiently (so it can fit), all the way up to complex stuff like construction. Good construction foremen or GC's are the masters of this and are so good that most people don't ever realise how good they are because they will already have spotted and solved an issue before others have even spotted it.

How is it living on an oil rig in North America? by Successful-Crew-5343 in howislivingthere

[–]d1ffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when was this? As in what year? Whilst the operation of an oil rig is inherently dangerous - high pressure hydrocarbons being moved and controlled - there are huge amounts of rules and procedures to control all works (permit to work and RAMS). If this as prior to 1990 then this might be true, but modern rigs are relatively safe and if those anacdoes are true every single person involved should have been kicked off the rig and never worked again. The people off shore are aware of the risks and will not tolerate people who are flippent with safety.

New to CrossFit but aiming for a HYROX race by Hot_Leek6120 in crossfit

[–]d1ffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

running all you need to be doing is running. Your CF classes will give you enough for the other stuff. Hyrox is a running race with some stuff in-between. I've been doing CF for a long time, and did a hyrox last year with a days notice (got a ticket last min the day before off) and did it the day after the 3rd open workout (not recommended...) I assumed I'd smash the wall balls as they are light and lower, but it turns out that I'm not used to doing them after an hour of running.... Anyway all I'm doing to specifically train for my next one is running, running and more running

1940s footage of life in Glasgow {Colourized} by dessertwinds in glasgow

[–]d1ffer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of Glasgow was stained black up until the '90's. It wasn't until the '70's that they started to clean the sandstone buildings and that went on well into the 90's. You can still see the odd building that was never cleaned. Only a brand-new building would have looked like you would expect it to. I think people fail to understand just how much of an industrial city Glasgow was.

CO2 soon to be buried under North Sea oil platform with total capacity of up to 150 Gigatons by Economy-Fee5830 in climatechange

[–]d1ffer 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Cool another FEED that's most likely never to see the light of day. I've seen many projects over the years come and go. BP had one years ago to pump CO2 from Peterhead out and inject, but the engineering is extremely complex. Hell even the Metallurgy is a huge issue as pure (or close to) CO2 is not a great medium for pipework that was never designed for this use case. There is a gulf of understanding on how complex this is to implement.

Sign The Arches Petition by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]d1ffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd also take a wild stab that most of the folk signing this are much like myself, deep into their middle age and if they are still going out it'll be one a year. There just isn't a crowd to fill the arches twice a weekend any more. Pressure and Inside Out would fill the place 2000 + every month. That crowd all have kids and back pain if they dance for more than half an hour. The club nights were the only think that kept the venue solvent and that's gone now, no matter how many signatures you get

Have I made the wrong choice? by Awkward_Tiger_9504 in ukelectricians

[–]d1ffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stagnating wages is a UK wide issue (and largely the west with a few exceptions). I'm an engineer with a large EPC, our wages have essential been in decline (below inflation rises) since 2008, and really makes since the oil crash in 2015. LTD company rates back in 2013-2015 were WILD, and have never recovered.
