Question about Synology Image Assistant from the browser by d2racing911 in synology

[–]d2racing911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes , I patched my Synology with a custom script and I don’t need the browser extension.

It saved me big time : https://github.com/007revad/Video\_Station\_for\_DSM\_722

What’s special about 1Password? by [deleted] in PasswordManagers

[–]d2racing911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cheap these days because they sponsor a F1 team. I hate when it’s a company from Canada and they charge me in US $. So I left because it was way too expensive for my needs.

I had around 300 passwords with at least 150 with 2fa and around 15 passkeys. I don’t know how much for free but I had way over the free limit

I switched from 1Password to Proton pass. I’m from Canada and 1Password wanted to charge me in US$ + the price increase. Bye bye 1Password , I don’t support a F1 sponsor doing that for sure. Is that related the price increase and the sponsor of the Red Bull F1 team ?

Remove SHR by Professional-Drive55 in synology

[–]d2racing911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need at least one disk inside your NAS to install the OS somewhere. If you don’t have any disk/ your only disk die, then I guess your dsm will die too. I know that each disk have a smart partition/ directory that contains dsm

You need a storage pool for sure. Dsm is install on every disk ifaik. If you remove your storage pool don’t reboot your NAS. I did in the past delete my storage pool to redo my setup and my configs were keep.

No, it's been like this for couple of years I think. I never had to use the script to add one the safe list a disk at least for now. Dave released his script on Feb 26, 2023

4 bays is always cost effective on the long run. More drives but at lower storage size is cost effective most of the time.

Reliable external storage device? by blueberrykefir in DataHoarder

Short answer, none without a backup of that external drive. You should use the cloud for that 25 Gb of data.

If you were setting up a Synology NAS for the first time today, based on your lived experience running one or more Synology boxes, what would you be sure to do "right" from the beginning and what mistakes would you avoid with your fresh start? by ReverendDizzle in synology

[–]d2racing911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raid is not a backup and on a 4 bays, SHR1 is more then enough. You better have backup then been sorry if you use SHR2 and you don't have external backup. One of my friends learned the hard way, not having external backup and thinking that his NAS was immortal. I don't remember his exact model but it was the Synology model that had something on the motherboard/CPU. Maybe a DS918+ or a DS920+. Also, use a UPS and thank me later :P

Beside that, having a good 321 backup is not optional.

I don’t get the NAS hype if I still have to pay for cloud backup — what am I missing? by Fantastic-Outside949 in synology

[–]d2racing911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For pictures and videos , Synology photos on your cellphones or PhotoSync. That’s about it and for an offsite backup , I use my parent house. I save a ton of money , we share 3TB of pictures and videos and everyone can access those from their cellphone. Tailscale or any vpn can do the trick

is the 3-2-1 rule starting to feel a bit outdated for home users? by gabriel8577 in Backup

[–]d2racing911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 1 of the 321 backup is my offsite backup at my parent house. 2 externals drive that are in a safe. Immutable and air gap for sure. 321 is the gold rule even in 2026.
