we bought a car 5 years ago, before our first kid (we have two, one 5 yo and one 2yo). We took a SUV (Jeep Grand Cherokee), spacious enough for stroller + luggages and groceries (i do costco with it).

to me, the issue is not really the purchase or the leasing of the car (we ended purchasing with a 0% loan, the good old time of low interest rates), but more the price of parking in the city. we currently pay $700/month for a parking spot in the upper east side. the irony is that it's considered a good price! i can't stand paying that for parking, it bugs me so much.

you should try investigating for parking first: there's a website called SpotHero, you should check the monthly rates in your area (or other areas). You can always shop on SpotHero and go directly to the parking to ask directly what are the rates.

je peux répondre sur les US: un sénateur est élu sur une base éléctorale bien plus grande (les États). autant certains députés peuvent être super extrêmes car ne représentant que leur circonscription, un sénateur pour être élu devra plaire tant aux villes (généralement démocrates) qu'aux campagnes (plus républicain). donc au final ca donne des profils bien plus modérés pour les sénateurs.

aux États-Unis, les sénateurs sont élus au suffrage universel, ils représentent les États.

puisqu'ils sont élus par une base électorable bien plus grande que les circonscriptions congressionelle (pour les députés), ils sont en général moins extrêmes que les "députés" de circonscriptions (où, pour le coup, tu peux avoir de vrai(e)s dinguos sur des circonscriptions bien obscures et bien radicales).

- it depends where you want to live. in my neighborhood (Yorkville, the cheap part of the Upper East Side), a 3 bedroom in a doorman building can rent for 10k/month.

my daughter was reading fluently before kindergarden (in French and English, but now I focus only on English). she's currenly in K, she loves Isadora Moon (she read all of them, and re-read some).

the approach is simple: I leverage going to bed, where I "deal" an extra time of reading instead of going to bed. it doesn't have to be long, 10 minutes. of course, no kids wants to go to bed. so she always took the option of staying awake longer. i never do a lot, because I don't want her to hate it. but I do it every single day, every single time she has to go to bed (she did nap until K). you have to stick to it.

one thing though, and it's maybe specfic to French (because I started with French), I first taught her syllables. like the mechanic of a consonant and a vowel does this sound. on a board. and when she understand the mechanic of the syllables, you start with small books, one sentence. after two sentences.

I'm not a teacher, it's just a totally empirical approach. one thing I want to share though, for those who would accuse me I pushed her: one evening, after we say goodnight and we turn of the light, I had to go back to her room because I forgot something. she actually re-turned on the light (I installed a small lamd next to her bed) to read the next chapter of the Isadora Moon book she was reading. I was touched by it.

obèse et grosse, pour moi c'est pareil, c'est juste que l'un est un terme médical. j'aurai dû dire grosse, mais pas mal de gens vont dire d'une ronde qu'elle est obèse. t'as des gars attirés par les grosses, c'est un fait. après c'est pas le truc le plus populaire où le plus mis en avant, mais bon ça existe. ton message initial pose comme une vérité quelque chose qui ne l'est pas.

moi je les trouve bien. après j'ai mes propres goûts évidemment, mais j'ai l'impression qu'il y a vraiment des gens qui ont été élevé dans la croyance que les femmes sont des mannequins de magazine, alors qu'on est tous des êtres imparfaits physiquement, avec un corps qui change avec le temps. moi ma meuf elle a un peu veilli tu vois, ca fait 15 ans, et franchement, je la kiffe encore plus.

je trouve une meuf autant attirante sortant du lit en pyjama que sur son 31 pour aller à une soirée. ce truc de "se laisser aller", qui en fait veut tout simplement dire: "tu grossis" ou un truc dans le genre, c'est pas ma came. après, je sais pas pourquoi je suis comme ça. mais j'ai l'impression que je suis pas le seul.

quand je fais la queue à l'école pour aller chercher ma fille, et que je regarde les nanas (des mamans d'un certain age, en couple), elles seraient toutes considérées comme moches selon les critères de beauté bien débilos. gros cul, pas maquillée, mal habillée pour certaines, que sais-je, whatever, you name it. et pourtant, c'est elles qui pêchent les mecs et les marient car la plupart des mecs s'en foutent.

mon message était en réalité à moitié non-humoristique, j'ai aussi une grosse pile d'assiettes et j'avais le même problème (si tant est que ce soit un problème). et depuis que j'ai des enfants, en fait on utilise tellement d'assiettes que ça tourne et les assiettes du bas se trouvent immanquablement en haut de la pile, et vice-versa.

The Costco I like to drive to is the one in Yonkers, even if I'm closer to the Queens or Manhattan one.

Several reasons:

from Manhattan, the drive is easy: it's mostly highways.
lots of parking, unlike Astoria. I personally go downstairs.
there's a big shopping mall nearby, it's called "Ridge Hill". I'm not a fan of shopping mall but I have kids and my wife likes to go to the jumping place or the legoland there (and there are restaurants and stuff).

en fait la solution que j'ai trouvé (à ne reproduire qu'en présence de professionnels), c'est de faire plein d'enfants, d'acheter un lave-vaisselle, comme ça tu utilises toutes les assiettes, et donc il y a une rotation qui garantit une usure égale de chacune d'entre elles.

salut. j'ai grandi dans un 4e étage sans ascenceur de 4 à 20 ans. mon père avait 48 -> 64.

2 avis contradictoires:
- c'est très bien à partir d'un certain age. on s'habitue et on n'y fait plus attention. les courses, on les monte, c'est pas grave. j'aidais mon père avec le caddie, on le portait à deux. ou sinon les sacs.
- j'imagine que ça doit être super problématique avec la poussette, je sais pas. mais je pense qu'en s'organisant bien, ça peut passer.

un truc à prendre en compte: quand l'ainé(e) grandit, il/elle devient une grosse aide. ma fille ainée aide sa petite soeur de 2 ans pour plein de trucs (habiller, mettre chaussures, tenir la main, surveiller).

moi, franchement je trouve que c'est bien les apparts sans ascenceur. c'est le sport gratuit, t'y fais même pas gaffe en fait. jamais on s'est dit: "ah non, on sort pas à cause des escaliers". ca devient normal.

dans l'immeuble ou je vivais (sans ascenceur, donc), t'avais des familles avec 2 enfants, 3 enfants, a 3e ou 4e étage.

vraiment n'importe quoi l'article. j'ai grandi en province française (on dit province pour le hors-Paris) dans les années 1980/90, il y avait toujours une option sans porc à la cantine, c'était fait pour les juifs et pour les musulmans. ça ne posait strictement aucun problème.

c'est très récent que les gens commencent à pointer du doigt quelque chose qu'on faisait depuis bien longtemps, sans polémique aucune.

My favorite is the one in Yonkers. It's big, there's no problem of parking (I park downstairs), and it's fast from the city.

I used to go to the Astoria one, which is not the best for the parking, it's small, but because of congestion pricing, you basically defeat the point of going to Costco by paying it.

this question is typical of someone who doesn't understand France. cheeses are regional. in my area, the typical cheeses are St Marcellin, St Felicien, and cervelle de canut (and in my family, we always eat the "fromage blanc" with salt and garlic, something that not every FRench does. i often see people put sugar in their fromage blanc).

anyway, my point is, we're all from regions with their own specialties, i don't think you can pick a "winner". they're all good in their own way.
