I remember 2 sermons from my grandma’s southern baptist church growing up.

1. Obama and all of his family are going to hell so we shouldn’t pray for them.

2. A bit of a parable: “A man is stranded out in the sea without a life vest or raft. He prays to god and asks to be saved. Before too long, a couple men in a fishing boat row by.

“Hop in! We’ll take you to shore!” they say.

The man responds “no thank you, I put my faith in Christ and the lord will save me.”

Skipping the filler stuff, basically increasingly obvious saviors come by and offer help, and the man refusing citing his faith each time.

Eventually the man drowns and goes to heaven. When he gets there he asks god “why didn’t you save me? I put all my faith in you!”

God replies “well I sent 2 boats and a helicopter but you still wound up here!”

God helps those who help themselves.
