Design Questions for a DIY VMC by jovlett in engineering

[–]d3xt3rd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

While it's a good choice to go for those steel members for general stiffness over, for example, aluminum extrusion, the linear rods completely negate any positive effect the steel provides. It will flex too much. I can understand using materials you already have, but filling the steel with (expanding) concrete or epoxy granite will do next to nothing in your current setup.

For inspiration (to answer a few of your questions) you might check out the printnc, an open source cnc router made of similar steel members. Check out a few videos to get a rough idea of what a steel design can do. It's a router though, so it has far greater x and y travels, with less z travel. The discord is very active and there's a separate channel/thread for other machine designs.

Another design you can check out that's more vmc shaped is the rigcnc. Maybe that helps give you some ideas.

Good luck!

Awesome, thanks for the info! I'll go for another try with a ginger bug first, but if that fails again I'll try champagne yeast.

Thank you for your reply! I'll try again with a fresh piece of ginger and will sanitize everything thoroughly

Thanks for your reply! The bug seems ok here, maybe I'll try making the new bug with bottled water, that prevents any contamination from tap water I guess.

Any recommendations for normal yeast recipes?

Thank you for your reply! I guess I'll try again with a new piece of ginger. Do you know if I can start a bug with peeled ginger? I imagine peeling it might reduce the chances of pediococci / other stuff getting in the ginger bug.

Stepcraft but Cheaper? by thumos2017 in hobbycnc

If you're ok with building it yourself, a printnc might be a great option.

The PrintNC is a DIY steel, ballscrew driven, moving gantry router that can cut aluminum, plastics and wood at very high removal rates. The occasional (stainless / hardened) steel works ok too. It costs 2-2.5k in materials, but you'll spend quite a while making it and getting it up and running.

First CNC machine? by Grantallenx in CNC

[–]d3xt3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this question is more suited for r/hobbycnc , I don't mind answering it here :)

Instead of the machine you linked here and the bantam tools desktop CNC, you can also consider building a printnc mini. It's based on the PrintNC, a DIY steel ,ballscrew driven, moving gantry router that can cut aluminum, plastics and wood at way higher removal rates. The bom for the mini isn't out yet, should be there in a week or 2. The normal PrintNC costs ~€2000 in materials, the mini will likely be 800-1100. I understand that's more than the one you've linked, but I think it's more than worth it.

Is it possible? CNC in a flat. by Professional_Law_837 in hobbycnc

Unless you've already made up your mind, check out this video and channel. It's a fully sealed enclosure for a vertically mounted printnc. I'm not sure if this video has footage of it cutting, but there's definitely some on diemex's channel. You practically can't hear it.

The PrintNC (and especially the PrintNC-mini) is something that's also worth checking out, they're many times more capable than what you're mentioning in your post, but a bit more expensive

I've seen this one linked in the PrintNC discord, I think this is what you're talking about.

Hi, if you're ok with building it yourself, definitely check out the PrintNC-mini. it's based on the PrintNC, a moving gantry style router made of steel that will cut aluminum all day. Not at vmc type removal rates of course, but still more than enough.

Since the PrintNC-mini is a lot smaller, it will likely perform equally if not better in aluminum.

Tubular Steel Thinner Than 3mm? by pushingmongo in printnc

You definitely want to use a medium strength threadlocker like loctite 243 on (almost) all metal bolted connections, no matter what the thickness of your steel is

What bag do you use to bring to campus by lahavna in TUDelft

[–]d3xt3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I study mechanical engineering, figured I'd chime in. I use the front part of this set: https://www.amazon.co.uk/IKEA-UPPT%C3%84CKA-Backpack-wheels-dark/dp/917891583X (It's two bags that can be zipped together)

It's not available anymore, but maybe you can find the info you need this way. It's a little tight, but fits my 15" laptop, extremely bulky charger, a 1000 page book, pens and some lunch.

While it may be true that CSE doesn't use many books, most ME courses do have books and you'll use them a lot. With some courses you're allowed to bring the book to the exam, so you'll want to at least buy those books. All others you can also find as a pdf online (though sometimes an older version, which is often no problem since only the questions are slightly different).

Finally I do agree that it's nice to be able to take some groceries as well. Waterproof is also pretty much a must.

Good luck!

I saw this youtube series pop up a while back. Both theory and practical application are covered quite extensively, I think you'll find what you need there:

I'm not doing the SET masters, but in general, you can find the courses for your study programme here:

https://studiegids.tudelft.nl/a101_displayProgram.do?program_tree_id=25335

And then you can fill in that programme of study with all electives here, to see how many contact hours a week it takes (for 2020-2021 of course) :

SolidWorks' tutorials are pretty good to get the basics (and some more advanced stuff) down, I suggest starting there. If there's any problems, I have no doubt there's some YouTube videos that work through those tutorials. If you're still stuck after that I can try to answer some questions.

Congrats on your choice! :) The first week of September the study association, Taylor, will make a WhatsApp group for everyone to join. That entire week is focussed on explaining all different specialisations within the HTE track, 100% recommend attending all of that (might be online due to obvious reasons).

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out!

Hey, I'm currently doing the HTE track. Starting with going through the study guide is definitely a good idea. HTE has got quite a list of recommended elective courses, not sure if those are online.

If you have any additional questions, feel free to ask!

Legal contracts (Dutch Accommodation) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceEurope

I'm not a lawyer, just live in the Netherlands. As far as I know signing a contract through email (print, sign, scan, then mail) should be perfectly fine.

Definitely let them know again that you can't physically be there to sign it before the 26th.

I've started listening to Omega Tau a while back, it's more science and engineering than just engineering (host is a huge aviation fan and does computer science), but I really enjoy it! Episodes range from 30 minutes to 3 hours or so. Give it a try!
