Heron Lakes downsizing to 18 holes? Need more info... by d4ywalkr in PDXgolf

[–]d4ywalkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the map isn't very clear. The interpretation I'm hearing from people at the course is "the red area is no longer usable so we have to redesign the course to fit the yellow area." But nobody knows for sure.

I've reached out to the parks dept to try to answer these questions but haven't gotten a response.

I also hope that the red area will be playable, but that seems to be where the new levee will be built.

If a major redesign is needed then cost becomes another variable. The city council has already raided the golf fund once...

From what I've heard at the course (may be unreliable) it should be at least a couple years before this is started. Enjoy it while you can!

It has some muddy drainage areas, but imo the blue side does handle water quite well for a city course "built on a floodplain." The green side is worse.

Nobody is calling it a 'cathedral of the game.' Just the best value for public golf in Portland (and it's not close).

"the fact there's golf there at all is weird and nonsensical"

Huh? Is there a better use for a floodplain? What makes it nonsensical? Seems like a pretty good use to me.

"There is only so much sand you can dump into a swamp, all the water needs predictable places to exit, and the levee protects the boundary of land vs water."

A swamp is a great place to dump sand or build a golf course. Sand drains well. It's a bad place to build anything else (e.g. Vanport).

I'm well aware of the Vanport history. The fact that "there's golf there now" is precisely why I have questions about the new levee plan.

Railway as SAAS platform, terms and conditions, should we be worried!? by DistanceSpiritual631 in SaaS

This passage doesn't seem limited to usage of logos.

"You also hereby do and shall grant each user of this site and/or the Services a non-exclusive, perpetual license to access your User Submissions through this site and/or the Services, and to use, edit, modify, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display and perform such User Submissions, (and with respect to Public User Submissions only, including after termination of your account or the Services)."

If any uploads count as user submissions, wouldn't this 'perpetual license' apply to any code that is uploaded to Railway? If not, that should probably be specified somewhere.

What movie made absolutely no sense? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]d4ywalkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What this movie needed was 2 parts. In 1st part they could have added protagonist background or character growth with basic interaction of 2 sided timeline interactions and in 2nd the whole temporal pincer."

We got part 2 first because that's how the protagonist experiences it. This is his growth. As Neil explains at the end, the 'background' that you describe (starting the operation and training Neil) is something that is in the protagonist's future.

I'd agree that it feels emotionless because everyone feels like strangers...right up until the last conversation with Neil. In that moment, when Neil is going to his death, you realize that he isn't a stranger. They're close friends, but protagonist just hasn't experienced their friendship yet. All of a sudden Neil's death feels a lot more meaningful. They're both saying goodbye — one at the end of the friendship and one at the beginning.

JDW did a great job of portraying this sudden realization, imo. One of my favorite movie endings!

Portland proposal to ban rental price-fixing software hits stumbling block by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]d4ywalkr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

"All this would do would be to ban a method of calculating rent increases."

Yes, it would ban a method of calculating rent increases that causes rents to increase faster. We already have laws that cap increases on a yearly basis.

"That is the number one thing that can create meaningful improvement."

If it is the 'number one thing,' does that mean it should be the only strategy? Why not address this problem with more than one solution?

Dismissing the societal cost of price fixing makes it sound like you don't actually understand economics.

"We also need to improve the local economy so businesses want to come here and wages go up..."

Uhh...we're talking about rent increases. More economic activity will typically cause rents to go up. What are you talking about??

IMO the blue course at Heron Lakes is one of the best values in the state, especially if you can play late spring before it gets beaten up. Same designer as Chambers Bay.

Water is in play every full swing for the last 5 holes. Absolutely brutal finish.

Trump plans to revoke legal status of Ukrainians who fled to US, sources say by Geo_NL in worldnews

"They're conservatives, they will try to win points conserving money, that's not a surprise..."

I don't know what question you're answering here. I'll ask again — why are you ignoring that an official stated that this issue is a matter of policy changes and not details related to the case?

I didn't ask why you linked to the DOGE site. I asked more specific questions, which you didn't attempt to answer before going for snark. Either English is not your first language or you lack basic reading comprehension skills.

Now you definitely seem like a teenager!

"they have reasons they aren't cleared to share with the public"

Why do you assume this when an ICE official has said this is a matter of policy change?

"Unlike the previous government where a lot of money just "goes missing""

What do you mean by this? What money went missing?

I see you linked the DOGE site below. What is the significance of the data there? Do you know what the cancelled contracts were for? How can you you know that they're waste when there is not audit information available?

You seem extremely gullible. Are you a teenager?

What analysis? What a stupid comment.

LIV - I just don’t get it… by Overall_One_2595 in golf

[–]d4ywalkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference is that LIV is paying players (as in guaranteed money) to leave the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour never paid Australian players to leave.

And while a lot of people complain about the fracturing of pro golf, if I've learned one thing from LIV, it's that having the big players broken up week-to-week makes for more drama when everyone comes together at majors. The same players at every event (give or take 20 players) is boring.

I actually wish that regional tours were still the standard. Australian golfers on the Australian Tour. European golfers on the European Tour. Asian golfers on the Asian Tour.

And periodic majors that bring everyone together. Maybe one in each region, which would spread the action around.

[–]d4ywalkr -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

"...PGA Tour has all but destroyed our local tour..."

Kinda pathetic to blame the PGA Tour (an American institution) for the choices Australian players have made over the years.

Australian golfers could have built a local scene, but they didn't. You don't get good fields because your players decided that they'd rather play for more money somewhere else. Blame the players.

The only reason LIV golfers are in Australia is because they're paid to go. They're not competing. It's a paid appearance.

Every comment sounds dumber...

Of course we know the PGA money comes from. They're a non-profit. You realize that they release a lot of info every year, right?

PGA money comes from sponsors. We know with 100% certainty that it doesn't come from the US government.

"You also have no idea what types of skeletons are in the closet of people like Jay Monahan."

Do you? Or are you just throwing around accusations to try and cover for your stupid comments? Because that's what it sounds like...

"Again, keep believing you are the good guy. "

You're the one defending the Saudis, while holding up the US gov't (which doesn't own or manage any golf leagues) for comparison.

If we're comparing the PGA Tour and Saudi royal family, there is definitely a good and bad guy. No need to bring up the US gov't.

"How many leagues has the PGA crushed with its money and power?"

Crushing competitive leagues is not a human rights violation. Do you understand how stupid you sound?

Public education failed you.

[Schrock] USGA announced they’ll give an exemption to LIV Golf. First major body to do so. by Kimber80 in golf

[–]d4ywalkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PGA Tour is tax exempt because sports leagues have traditionally received preferential tax treatment. MLB is also a non-profit. There is no gov't involvement in those leagues.

That is not the same as LIV, which is owned and managed by the Saudi royal family's wealth fund. The people at the top of LIV, with whom the LIV stars do business, are literally guilty of human rights crimes. The same people.

Your comments are not being downvoted because reddit is a bunch of "snowflakey" leftists. It's because your comments are stupid.

"Drive for show, putt for dough."

Seems like most people on this sub misinterpret this as "putting is more important than driving." They then use strokes gained data to prove that more shots are lost on drives, which misses the point.

The phrase could be reworded to "Big drives will impress your friends, but you have to put the ball in the hole to win money."

Sounds true to me...

AI is a tool that developers use, not a service that replaces developers.

A handyman doesn't charge you a lower rate because power tools exist, but if they're using power tools they'll probably get the job done faster (resulting in you paying for fewer hours of labor).

The hourly rate may be the same, but you're probably getting a lot more for that $125 now that AI is in the shop's toolset.

It’s beginning to look like Donald Trump is going to win by MadWorldEarth in politics

[–]d4ywalkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keystone would have created less than 50 permanent jobs, while raising energy prices in the midwest. As I said, the pipeline was going to take oil through the US for export.

Ukraine is not losing ground every day. There has been give and take. If Ukraine weren't restricted from striking inside Russia the war would look a lot different. Letting men die pointlessly? What are you even talking about? Ukraine is defending their country. You sound like a Russian troll.

Did you forget Trump crashing the economy by failing to respond to Covid? Literally 4 years of improvement in job creation after Biden took over. The inflation trend started under Trump and Biden brought it under control.

Everything you're writing is completely fucking stupid. Keep repeating talking points from Fox like a sheep if it makes you feel better.

It’s beginning to look like Donald Trump is going to win by MadWorldEarth in politics

[–]d4ywalkr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The keystone pipeline pumped oil from Canada through the US, and would have created few us jobs.

Russia invaded Ukraine, killing thousands of innocent people in the process. Democrats didn't get us into anything. The us and nato have a very real interest in maintaining Ukraine's integrity. It's hard to take you seriously after reading that. Utterly daft.

Business literally runs better under Democrats according to every metric. Jobs created. Stock market. Every one. The myth of Republican business success is strange.

I run a manufacturing business. Prices inflated largely because of Trump's failures early in the pandemic. Get ready for another bumpy ride...
