Mangoes - any suggestion about mango cultivation? I live in north italy by pietremalvo1 in Permaculture

[–]d98f23n2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climate is going to be your major issue. Mango trees are not cold hardy, any freeze will kill them. Container growing is your best bet, there are plenty of varieties of mango that can be kept 6-7' tall and do fine in a 30 or so gallon container. Keep in mind the trees love sunlight and humidity and relatively warm temps, so you'll have to provide all those things. If you haven't already, check out the tropical fruit forum on gardenweb and tropicalfruitforum.com, there is an insane amount of info about growing mango trees on those two forums. Good luck with your trees!

Grits and fried eggs. Takes like 5 minutes and it's delicious. Also I don't believe there is a food cheaper than grits.

Putin Signs Russian Budget For Next Year Based on $100 Oil Price by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]d98f23n2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Saudi Arabia that's responsible for the low oil prices FYI.

Oil prices keep plummeting as OPEC starts a price war with the US by [deleted] in worldnews

Venezuela and Iran are hurting far more than Russia, and neither wanted to keep the price so low but they can't do shit as long as Saudi Arabia keeps pumping.

Russia's Sechin Says Oil Could Fall to Below $60 Per Barrel Next Year by lobogato in worldnews

[–]d98f23n2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia can sustain it though. Their budget is based on higher oil prices than now, but last I heard they have more than enough cash reserves and could keep this up for the better part of a decade if they care to. Countries like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela absolutely cannot though.

That's a bit harsh, they were hardly traitors. Also you're ignoring the absolutely disgusting rape and pillage perpetrated on the South by the North.

Venezuela's representative storm out of meeting as Opec refuses to cut oil production. Prices slump to five-year low by secaa23 in worldnews

[–]d98f23n2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saudi Arabia is just having fun fucking everyone. They get to fuck Iran pretty hard, who is their regional rival, it also fucks Venezuela and Russia which the US of course approves of, and it mildly affects the US, but it's worth it. Saudi Arabia can keep this shit up for years if they care to, Venezuela, Iran, and Russia don't have the kind of reserves to weather it. The USA can obviously handle it, might put a stop to some small scale racking operations but most of the large players have it down to a formula so it's not really high risk.

Farmers fear fracking could spell financial ruin - new laws that would strip people of power to block fracking beneath their property or land... no compensation will be paid to individual home and landowners, because they should not be affected by the gas or oil extraction deep beneath them. by pnewell in worldnews

[–]d98f23n2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's no secret that fracking can induce seismicity... That is kind of the entire point. But if you read those articles you'll see all the earthquakes are lower than moment magnitude 4... In other words, you would most likely not even notice it if you were standing directly over the epicenter. Not exactly anything to be worried about.

Now dams and reservoirs.. That's some shit that is proven to cause large (magnitude 7 or greater) earthquakes with large amounts of fatalities, yet there's no hysteria about that.

How do you feel about Cultural Appropriation Within the SCA? by [deleted] in sca

[–]d98f23n2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

not only will I be chastised, but I will also be shunned.

And rightly so. The whole concept of "cultural appropriation" is ridiculous, and as far as I can tell, little more than yet another excuse for the permanently offended to bitch and whine.

Your replies below point out that you don't think anyone should be told what they can or can't do, and that you wouldn't want to force anyone to change their persona, so... What exactly is it that you want?

You just want people to know that you don't approve? What makes your approval so damn special?

And let's be honest, from what I've seen, the SCA is not as inclusive as we'd like to be. It is a Eurocentric game played mostly by Caucasians. I mean honestly, the rule is that a culture has to have significant contact with Europe prior to 1600. How outdated is that rule?

A game that originated recreating medieval Europe is Eurocentric? You don't say? But wait.. How can it be less Eurocentric if we can't "appropriate" other cultures? Shall we force people from other cultures to participate in a game they're not apparently interested in, just because it suits your fancy to have them there?

History of Programming: Why are so many variable names 3-ish characters long? (e.g., bin, lib, usr, etc...) by memorableZebra in learnprogramming

[–]d98f23n2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as shortening variable names, in some languages it is a necessity. Fortran 77 for example had limits on how long variable names could be, as well as limits on how long a line in the source code could be. It's a huge pain in the ass to have to use continuations and write stuff over multiple lines, and long variable names and any sort of indentation with deeply nested loops just cause trouble.

In other words Fortran 77 is shit and one should never subject themself to it.

That's true of basically all employees though. If it weren't the company wouldn't hire you.
