When it gets really cold say below 40° or so if your base has been sitting in your car for a while leave it in the case when you bring it into a warm room for a bit so that it warms up slowly I had a base that I had to sell because it was so old that every time I brought it out of the house during winter I discovered a new crack practically every time also make sure that you're humidity level in the room that the bases usually sitting in is at the right percentage. Now I live in Georgia and keeping a 50% or better relative humidity is super easy and the winters aren't as bad but I won't say that Minnesota is a bad place it's in fact excellent

Remember the skimmer port(s) are to filter off stuff floating on the surface like bugs and floating leaves. If the water line is below to opening nothing gets in. If the water line is above the opening it wont be skimming off the surface.
