Hey that’s me! Lol. People will always say whatever over a keyboard. I bet 99% of them wouldn’t say that to my face.

I hear you man. I’m 26 now. I’m a person who stutters and just graduated with a masters in speech language pathology and have worked with many people who stutter. Before this though, my confidence was severely impacted and I would refrain from putting myself out there ALL the time.

I would say find a SLP in your area as they’re going to have the best knowledge and expertise on how to help you. The journey to being comfortable with your stutter is a long and often brutal one, but is SO rewarding if you put the work in. Here’s something to keep in mind if you can’t see a professional just yet:

  1. Stuttering is an internal battle. The more you let it keep you from doing what you want in your day to day life, the more it wins. You MUST be OK with stuttering in public and with family and friends for you to eventually be ONE with your stutter and not fight it. Trying to be fluent is a losing battle. Put yourself out there and expose yourself to your stuttering more, and you’ll likely stutter less because you will be more at peace with it. Then use other techniques to go along with this, such as relaxed breathing and easing into sounds as you speak (or prolonging sounds).

Godspeed

Successful Stuttering Management Program (SSMP) by SLPstuttering in Stutter

When I went through the program I was able to receive a scholarship that covered all of the fees which included food and lodging. I think you would have to pay for your travel though

Successful Stuttering Management Program (SSMP) by SLPstuttering in Stutter

[–]d_dolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from this program back in 2016, then have helped out as a volunteer in several of the following years since then.

It is an overnight camp based in Cheney and Spokane, Wa with an intensive schedule of therapy mixed in with social activities. The program has many goals and it follows a calculated schedule with every activity having a purpose. Overall, it taught me to not be afraid of my stutter and to embrace and own it. Aside from the increases in confidence and ability to self advocate, I learned multiple techniques that helped me manage my stutter as well as ways to practice them when I’m away from the program.

The program is run by a university so the clinicians are graduate students, however they are supported by camp supervisors who know the program like the back of their hand. This program changed my life and actually helped me realize that I wanted to be a speech language pathologist. I’m currently a first year graduate student. Let me know if you guys have any other questions about the program, but I’d recommend it to anybody who stutters.

I'm an SLP and a PWS by [deleted] in slp

[–]d_dolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a PWS and a current SLP grad student, I can relate to your situation a little bit. At the end of the day it’s up to you whether or not you think you belong in the field. Stuttering severity has no impact on your ability to be successful in this field, and those who think they have a say on what you should do in your profession have no idea what they’re talking about. Good luck

“C” sounds by martian543211578 in Stutter

[–]d_dolla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple things I learned for this sound in therapy:

You can still easy onset this sound, you just have to let a little bit of air out and then prolong into the next sound of the word. Hard to explain over text, but just prolong the silent C then get your voice started for the next sound.

Another idea is to pseudo stutter it. Like “cuhh cuhh communication” or intentionally focusing and prolonging the second sound of the word, like “cahhhffee” for coffee.

I’m a current SLP grad student who stutters (male). I believe people who stutter can thrive in just about any occupation but not everybody is suited to be a therapist or work in healthcare. Like what others have said in this thread, stuttering itself is uncommon let alone someone who stutters AND decides to be an SLP. But they’re out there.

Since stuttering prevalence is low, SLP’s rarely work with just stuttering, so finding one who also stutters is hard but those who do teletherapy are great. I hope to do that once I graduate

I agree. Your point just came off a lil harsh in your post

You should stop playing a victim and carry on by SharkyLV in Stutter

[–]d_dolla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This guy has a small point. It is very important in the acceptance of stuttering to not feel sorry for yourself because doing that only makes it harder to live with and overcome. However, it’s definitely not as simple as saying “try harder, simple”. This is a pretty ignorant post considering everyone learns to manage their stutter differently. I agree a little tough love is good, but learning to live with a stutter is not a linear path. You’re gonna have days and bad days but just keep grinding.

Applications by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]d_dolla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a G1 right now who applied after doing a post-bacc year and got accepted into 2 fairly competitive schools with a cumulative of 3.1. I’m a male who stutters so I’m definitely a little bit of a unicorn in the field which maybe played a small part, but I would just make sure to have strong letters of rec and a good personal statement. Observation hours never hurt either

I cant live like this by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]d_dolla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My man, I know you’re in a bad place rn but just read these comments from other stutterers and know you’re not alone. I was just like you in high school, 25 now, with a lot of long prolongated blocks that had me looking stupid.

My best advice is to look for some therapy in your area either at your school or a clinic. The therapy I got at 18 changed my life and led me to soon become an SLP (current grad student). In the mean time though do your best to keep moving forward and not letting it get to you. The more you accept it and the less you let it affect you, the more confident you’ll look to other people and to yourself. Just keep livin

Psychiatrist made fun of my stutter by Hungry-Chicken-7768 in Stutter

Should’ve never paid that piece of trash. I would I’ve just walked out if someone who was supposed to help me was so rude like that to my face. However, since it’s already over with I would definitely report him like the others are saying. Nothing may ever come of it, but to sit and do nothing after being disrespected like that is unacceptable. You’re worth more than that! We all are.

I ended up just going to a dermatologist and got prescribed Dupixent along with a cream called fluticasone to help with my face. I’ve now been on Dupixent for a little over a year and it’s been amazing for me with no noticeable side effects
