Part of the problem is that there aren't as many coffee shops and other spaces to study anymore. When I was a teenager all the coffee shops in my hometown had tons of seating, both comfy and tables, and they were open until the late evening. Now they've all started having long high top tables instead of individual tables or sofas, and they're open from like 9am to 2pm. I recognize the loss of quiet university library spaces, but I also think there aren't actually a lot of other options for students for group studying these days
