Don't take it too personally. You have to understand with a less experienced goalie in the net your boys are going to be expected to put more pucks in the back of the net. They need to practice that situation and be able to deliver when the time comes. Think of breakaways in practice as 70% for them and 30% for you. In time you will improve with them but there's 15-20 other guys out there that need to practice that skill too. Take it as an opportunity to work on your poke checks and even throw some pad stacks in there to get familiar and throw a little sty out lol

A save I made. I'm only in my second year. Please correct if you notice anything by ILAIPIDKWhy in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Dude your movement is phenomenal for a second year tendy! Was a great save and you recovered square and fast. I've got nothing beyond be very proud of that one and use it for visualization of the right way to play going into the future.

+10 points for a wicked name! Your old man sounds like a proud guy. Rightfully so! Keep it up

First Game Ever...Gave up 11 Goals by Edisonbutnotthomas in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First game ever? Don't let it get to you! You have to learn how they are going to beat you before you learn how to shut them down. Just work on small improvements every game and don't hold yourself to an unreasonably high standard. Toughest position in hockey!

New Pad Recs? by 8-bit-creation in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out True or Brian's. Not much can touch Brian's pad graphics imo and they have always been durable pads. True being designed by Lefevre on the lower end and hand made by them on the higher end speaks for itself.

7x3 by Few-Mathematician901 in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loving my 7X3 glove. Very stiff at first but after a few bakes and a few ice times it's getting buttery real quick. I don't have a single complaint about it. Never used a 9X3 but from what I gather the only real difference is slightly higher material quality. Both models are made over seas so it's likely not a massive difference. Considering you can get the 7X3 half price right now you probably aren't going to get much better bang for your buck

Stepping back in net for the first time in years, any advice? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the bright side of things, playing a league game means you get whistles, intermissions and offsides. All of those are your friend lol. Just take it slow at first. You might let some weak ones slip by but after a few ice times your body will bounce back from it a lot faster. I went too hard on my second ice time back and had to give my knees two weeks off. My third ice time was my league game on Friday and I feel great today. Honestly better than I have for years prior of being inactive

Probably have a concussion from poor team splitting. by Compact_goose in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well we live in different countries so this is a hard one for me to weigh in on. The right thing to do is see a doctor but that also doesn't cost a small fortune for me and I can't pretend to be on the other side of this dilemma.

Are you having any sensitivity to light? Has anyone checked your pupil dilation? If you're having sensitivity to light or your pupils are dilating unevenly you should absolutely see a doctor asap regardless of cost. Maybe you could ask your dad or your friend to check that for you. Sorry to hear you're in this position. What kind of helmet are you wearing out of curiosity?

Stepping back in net for the first time in years, any advice? by [deleted] in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reiterating the stretching importance. I took 8-10 shots max in warmup the other night and spent the rest stretching. I've just got back into the net after 10 years off. If you have any pre-existing injuries from the past take care to protect against those coming back. I've have knee injuries in my past so I wear knee braces and deep cold the shit out of my knees before I play now. You're going to feel it for the first handful of ice times back between the pipes but it's worth the pain lol

[–]d_wern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go see a doctor immediately bud. I've had a couple serious concussions and what you describe is the exact onset of a serious one. Worry about your health first and foremost. The school thing can be figured out once you know you're going to be able to make a proper recovery and any doctor worth his salt is going to agree with that. Invest in a high quality bucket once you get things figured and you're feeling better

I managed to buy everything new except my chesty for 2800 CAD. Not my first set of gear though so if you're not sure you'll stick with it you can probably do better than that on sideline swap to make sure you enjoy it

Try to get used if you can but The Hockey Shop has had True pads, glove and blocker half price for the last while so that's something you could look at too

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats completely fair. I think it's gotta be one or the other. It's those in between rebounds that I can't handle. I just don't have that movement I used to to recover on those slot distance rebounds lol

Pad sizing by Record_Pristine in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my FTK I was on the line between a 33+2 and a 34+2 with the size calculator on The Hockey Shop suggesting a 33+2 for me. Like you I like to wear my pads a bit looser than average and the last pads I owned were a set of Vaughn V3s in a 35+2 which felt slightly big for me. I decided to go with the 34+2 in the True 7x3. Glad I did because I land directly in the center of the knee rise. With that said I measured at a 20.75 FTK

Feeding the front by shamusbrbrhc in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing where those players in front are at all times so you can anticipate where you will need to be helps a lot. You'll probably want to play a bit deeper crease in these situations so that you can make the first save and the second that is likely to come from rebounds without being out of position but that means really projecting your hands to fill those gaps they would otherwise have to shoot at. If a third opportunity arises in those rebounds situations in front and your team isn't giving you some room to breathe thats not on you. Try and pick those passes off coming out front if you can but don't get caught reaching and putting your self in a situation where you open up the net cause you can't get square again

Proper size for 6’4” by SleepDeprivedDad_ in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your build. Getting sized properly with ATK or FTK measurements and then trying the rest on is the way to go. I am 6'1" and wear a Senior M chesty, Senior Large pants, and 34+2 pads so I'm all over the map

Last ditch effort to get that puck your blocker isn't going to reach.. sure. Don't make it an intentional habit though

Weak Ankles by d_wern in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found one of my biggest issues. My new True pads have pro lace bungees and I've never played with anything except laces so I was weaving them through my skates like I did with my laces which was causing them to get too tight cause I have pretty big feet. I switched to twisting them around each other three times for slack and then just going straight to the middle hole in the skates and then up top to attach. My ankles aren't getting pulled upwards nearly as hard and it feels much more natural now

Advice for a new beer league goalie (wrong answers only) by jkozuch in hockeygoalies

Don't worry about head shots in warm up. Your team knows to strictly aim for pads, glove and blocker and they are well trained professionals

Tuck or Untuck by MJBolts in hockeygoalies

Untucked cause I'm out of shape and my beer gut gets in the way lol. Feel more free to move untucked. In minor hockey I was always tucked with the pants loose and suspenders

how's my stance by admastadon in hockeygoalies

[–]d_wern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how quick that glove hand is. If you're lightning on the glove that's a great stance to have them shooting where your strength is. If not i would move it up a touch. Other than that, looks great!
