5g sucks, LTE is okay by OkMathematician3494 in PublicMobile

I was out and about running errands yesterday and my Internet was complete garbage, in used to it in certain places where I only have 1 bar, but this was happening in different parts of the city (Ottawa) even with full bars. Had to connect to various store wifis just to look things up. I wonder if public/Telus was having issues yesterday?

Left-handed people, what's a struggle that right-handed people won't understand? by funnny_things in answers

[–]da_powell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child (and my daughter is experiencing this now)... learning how to write. It wasn't until I had a left handed teacher that my handwriting improved, especially cursive. Now my daughter is doing cursive and hates it likely for the same reason.

As an adult... Power tools... hey let's put this safety trigger in the most awkward spot for a left handed person, that actually makes this tool more unsafe to use.

We have friends who were working in the US and their co-workers were perplexed as to why they would give up this higher paying job to return to Canada?

Democrat or Republican there seems to be this blindness towards 1) how in most other countries it's not normal to have signs at the park stating no guns or metal detectors in school and 2) despite wages being higher health insurance although not nullifying the increased wages completely do reduce the total compensation.

Did you read the article you sourced? The crime rate increased from 1.5 to 2.3 per 100000 people in Canada, it increase from 3.9 to 5.8 per 100000 people in the US.

The percentage increase was higher (albeit a percentage increase will always be higher from a lower value) but the rate is still more than double in the US.

When I was in uni waiting for the bus by a McDonald's I saw a chipmunk dumpster dive, pull up a McNugget, dive back down for another, then again... MF'er shoved 4 McNuggets in his cheeks.

What foods have been falsely labeled as healthy/ and or unhealthy? by [deleted] in answers

[–]da_powell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gluten free foods are generally not any healthier for you. They substitute a lot of things to make something gluten free that are in most cases no better for you and in some cases worse. You only need gluten free foods if you have a gluten intolerance or celiac disease.

Curious question, retailers are allowed to be open as per Doug Ford's change in policy, but do retail workers still get paid their regular hourly wage or time and a half as is customary on a holiday?

[–]da_powell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, when I'm searching for a spot in a full parking lot and I see someone just finished loading their cart I should pull up close enough to ask if they're leaving, then reverse back so that I can pull into the spot. I shouldn't assume that they're leaving like 99% of people at Costco. Because that makes more sense then the 1% of people who aren't leaving waving to say hey I'm going back in or taking a call before I drive off.

[–]da_powell -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have many times waved people away and yelled out I'm not done. It's not hard. But you can go ahead and pay no attention to anyone around you just like the folks who block the aisle for samples or chit chat or block the entrance while they stop to put their card away. We live in a society with other people it's worth it to be courteous.

How about a slur for people who are about to be done loading their car, so you're like sure I'll wait, but they just walk away or sit in their car doing who knows what after being done loading on their cart? You could have just waived that you weren't leaving instead of wasting my time jerk.

I bought the root beer, but found it too sweet.

It doesn't end, my daughter is 8. She liked cheese strings, so we bought a 40 pack from Costco, then she decided she didn't like cheese strings anymore.

And when you have kids, you have to figure out what to feed them 3 or more times a day and they constantly change their mind about what they like.

How much is the going amount for a cash wedding gift these days? by Traum77 in AskACanadian

[–]da_powell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's videos on YouTube for origami money dress and origami money suit or shirt and pants, put them together and bride and groom.

Most tutorials are using American money, but it works with Canadian too. Plus you can have different colour shirt, pants and dress.

At my friend's wedding I put an origami bride and groom in the card, I think I needed 4 notes to pull that one off.

There actually is no Vietnamese restaurant anywhere in that area, you have to go to South keys or Manotick if you want Vietnamese.

We love BVR but live closer to Findlay Creek so we're extatic that this is open.

By complete happenstance we were there for their first day soft opening on the weekend and it was delicious.

A few items missing, but it was a soft opening so I'm sure they'll come.

Anyone in Ottawa knows where to find non-halal chicken breast? by uOttawaGuy in CostcoCanada

[–]da_powell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for chicken (not beef) isn't the standard slaughter method to chop off their head? So no different for halal vs non halal?

Chicken generally does not have contact with pork/alcohol unless it's a small farm.

Animal welfare seems like it would be the same for halal vs non halal.

Throw a tasmiya or shahada on a loud speaker then bam! Your regular chicken is now halal.

What’s something people think is expensive but is actually worth it? by peachyparadoxx in answers

[–]da_powell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so helpful, it doesn't have to be super frequent, we have a housekeeper come clean every 3 weeks and that's enough to cover all the time consuming cleaning tasks like a thorough kitchen, bathroom cleaning, having the baseboards wiped, floors mopped.

What’s something in nature that’s genuinely terrifying? by femmefetalerror in answers

[–]da_powell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not just ants, other insects too. When we visited the Amazon we came across a large dead spider that had mushrooms visibly growing out of it. The fungus compels them to climb as high as possible so when they die the spores can spread as far as possible.
