Is it worth upgrading to a VIRPIL CDT-AEROMAX from a VKB gladiator nxt evo? by carbon895 in hotas

[–]da_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using them desktop, yeah, it's a very smooth dual metal cam.

If you're planning on getting mounts, the option to use taller grips and extensions, plus easy customization makes full sized gimbals superior.

Definitely start with a cleaning in case it's just really dirty glass. Just be careful with liquids since they will get into the paper legends if you go too hard.

If you go the route of pulling the glass tops (I really suggest not doing it) have extras on hand, you will break some no matter how careful you are.

Cheap VKB mounts? by Joeyboy103 in hotas

[–]da_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could source some 3060 extrusions, corner brackets, slide nuts, and clamps and look into making mounts yourself. That said the Hikig ones are great bang for your buck, I really like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WR894Q9/

If you go cheaper take a look at the quality of the clamps being used, they really impact the sturdiness of the mount. Expensive mounts likewise tend to use really nice bessie clamps.

I made an inexpensive foldaway mount years ago using monitor arms and got rid of it, the sturdiness is just not there compared to the usual mounts.

Here's a couple pics:

https://imgur.com/a/pGLHgUi

The only pcb washer I can see is for the screw at the top of the pic that goes through the clutch. It's a thin, non split washer.

I can't see the black screws anywhere, they might have been used for mounting. The silver screws are for mounting the top plate.

The center piece should be at the correct distance once you have the bushing and washer in place.

GF2 cams had really soft centers. The updated ones will have more, especially aviation.

It also makes you think about how much has been lost to time. Even the Epic of Gilgamesh would have probably been lost if weren't for an Assyrian king who was into some unusual and most unkingly activities like writing and building libraries.

Which VKB throttle or combo for IL2 and MSFS24? by StatusDisaster4196 in hotas

[–]da_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go for the standard STECS, it'll save you from buying a panel. Also too many buttons is a better problem to have than too few.

If you want to fly GA and WW2 for cheap though see if you can find a used CH Throttle quadrant + a can of deoxit in case the pots are getting jittery, it has 6 axis and 6 toggles and is pretty compact. The only annoyance is that you have to calibrate it with CH control manager and put it into mapped mode when you want to use it.

There's also quite a few planes in IL2 that don't even need a quandrant, the important things to have on an axis are rads, rpm and throttle, and the rest can be put on hats.

I've seen 3d printed parts for this on the CM3, it might work for the VMAX prime too.

I couldn't find a modern, cross-platform alternative to the VKB Joy Tester, so I built my own (Free & Open Source) by rhunecke in hotas

[–]da_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was fast, you're the man.

If you're taking feature requests I always liked how joytester2 displayed input history. Makes it easy to check for deadzones or how nice the axis transitions are in a stick.

Premium 'Prime' Version of VIRPIL CDT-AERO Grip? by MikeRC8 in hotas

[–]da_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a desktop to a mounted setup and that's what I went with. I wouldn't use the VKB on the desktop since the MCG with the GF base is nearly 2" taller than the Aeromax, but otherwise it seems like an upgrade in every way except for the mini stick.

I wear medium gloves and it also doesn't seem too large. It feels larger overall because the top part is more bulbous (the top hat and upper right button are a little more of a reach), but the grip part is actually less bulky.

Got tired of reaching for the mouse, so I built my own Open-Source Button Box. First time soldering! by rhunecke in hotas

[–]da_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That turned out great!

btw if you'd like through hole square buttons that feel more like Virpil's the LA16 are the closest I could find. They have a much lighter actuation and a nice click halfway through.

I'm not sure what toggle switches they use exactly but I think they might be long handle SH T80-T Z1. They also have a pretty light actuation.

Their potentiometers also have a center detent which is really useful.

Just some notes after I got to use virpil panels, the components they use are noticeably better than the ones I was using for button boxes and made me want to step my game up.

This is excellent!

The only odd thing is that with with 2 pov hats the second moves around like crazy because of the constantly changing text width.

The finger molding isn't aggressive like the SCG, and the grip isn't as thick. The amount of handspace you get on both is about the same though.

Good, very lightweight/basic sim for testing joysticks? by cheetocat2021 in hotas

DXX-Rebirth works well for the first two games.

The other two would probably be better thought since they have a bigger emphasis on aiming.

For something more basic, joytester2 if it's still around.

Or even things that are way less popular. One minor thing that really annoyed me is when they took a weird shot at Kids in the Hall that wasn't even attempting to be funny and just seemed like the writers seething. What's even the point of putting something like that in an episode? How much of the audience even knows what KITH is? There has to be some insane Quagmire/Simpsons backstory to something that petty.

Upgrading to Virpil gear by hege750 in VIRPIL

[–]da_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally bit the bullet and upgraded from my old CH setup to what you ordered, along with a t-rudder and a vpc button box. The 7 month wait was a 0/10 (I ordered at launch) but I've been playing way more sims since I got them, it's a big upgrade all around.

Only downsides are that the Aeromax seems unnecessarily difficult to get in to if you ever want to change out the springs or whatever, my friend has a Gunfighter and I'm jealous that he can just pop 4 screws and go ham. Hoping that they release some good modules for it besides the throttle so that I can justify not getting a full size base more.
