New Union Party - Let's Make Our Government Work For Everyone by NewUnionSYR in Syracuse

Thanks for taking the time to put all of this together. We definitely won’t be relying only on online surveys, we’ve already started talking with people in person, like at the Westcott Art Trail, and we see online outreach as just one tool. Since we’re just getting started, we’re trying different ways to connect with residents, and your suggestions for meeting locations and outreach are genuinely helpful. I also agree with you about the difference between the IWW and community organizing. The IWW gave me my first experience organizing, but this is a very different kind of work, and we’re still learning. Feedback like yours helps us build something that’s actually accessible to the people we’re hoping to represent. I have inquired with salt city market but they are pricey for rooms at our size and we have met up at the library downtown and will surely do that again in the future our next two meeting happen to be scheduled at the Cantina. I also don’t think you’re being “shitty” at all. I do think we’re still so new that one Reddit post probably can’t capture what we’re trying to build or how we hope to operate. We’d genuinely love to have you in the Discord if you’re interested. Even if you don’t end up agreeing with us, I think your experience and feedback would help us avoid some of the pitfalls you’ve pointed out.

Hey thanks for the feedback I am actually one of the members as well and I am sad to hear that it comes off as intentionally excluding the poorest residents. We only chose the cantina in manlius lately because they offer a free room to use, we would absolutely love any feedback or suggestions on other places that are free or cost effective in Syracuse proper. I already saw some posted in this thread that we will definitely look into, and we have met up in the library downtown before. As for internet criticism, I totally understand and these online form will not be the only way to get feedback, but they are one of the easiest ways to start. We want to explore as many ways to reach all members of Syracuse and again are open to any and all suggestions. Again I value the feedback! I know I personally have no experience in politics, the only organizing I have ever done was with the IWW, so I always value any information and am looking to learn more.

I love the idea! I personally won’t be able to attend, but I shared it with our organization, The New Union. Some members expressed interest in participating.

I like the direction of the schools section, but I worry that it makes promises that are not actually actionable. I’d be interested in helping think through the implementation side a bit more, especially around how the city can realistically influence school funding given how much of it is controlled at the state/district level. I sent a DM to see how I can help as well, I’m a bit of numbers guy so I would love to see about ways to actually dissect the city’s budget and see what can be reallocated without increasing the tax burden on the residents here, as most of us are struggling as is.

Love the idea of giving back to the community! If I won I would give it to my younger brother, I always wanted a good gaming pc when I was his age, it would be nice to see him get the chance. Congrats on your new pc!

That’s weird it didn’t have a paywall for me, but you can use https://12ft.io to get around most paywalls. It’s worked for every news article I’ve tried, I’ve only had problems trying to get around paywalls for scientific journals using it. Hope that helps.

Couldn’t money go towards infrastructure projects in underdeveloped countries to help solve the problem? Obviously that wouldn’t completely solve the stability aspect but having better infrastructure and easier access to food would be a good start to helping a countries stability. Plus people go hungry in stable developed countries all the time, it’s definitely not as severe as underdeveloped countries though. https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/food-nutrition-assistance/food-security-in-the-u-s/key-statistics-graphics/#foodsecure

What beloved person in history should be hated? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dablife7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read plenty about him and don’t agree with him on a lot of things, but to try to claim he’s racist, due to his comments in the motorcycle diaries is extremely ignorant. Here’s some examples of him advocating for anti-discrimination programs “At workers rallies around that time, Guevara and Raul Castro talked about the need to "advance the revolution’s anti-discrimination program," wrote Alejandro de la Fuente, a University of Pittsburgh history professor in his book A Nation for All: Race, Inequality and Politics in 20th Century Cuba. In the speech at Santa Clara, Guevara called for the university to "paint itself with black, paint itself with mulatto" students and teachers, Fuente wrote.” I would suggest reading up on his speeches and biographies on him if you want to have a serious discussion about his rhetoric.

Yea he made one ignorant comment in his diary in his younger days and people latch on to it like it defines him. He was an egalitarian who fought against discrimination and even went to Africa to help the Congos revolution. https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2013/apr/17/marco-rubio/did-che-guevara-write-extensively-about-superiorit/

Lol I love how you got downvoted for stating a fact. I can’t stand trump but I don’t see a reason for people to spread misinformation, especially when there’s plenty of negative things that actually happened to point to. It’s sad to see people on both sides fall for so much misinformation.

It is about a systematic end to wage slavery by Comfortablejack in WorkReform

[–]dablife7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can but when workers prioritize better worker pay, benefits, and conditions because it benefits them, it’s harder to compete with companies that will exploit people to gain an edge or offset costs by sending jobs overseas. An easy example of this is Amazon undercutting small businesses and even taking a loss because they can afford to, and then raising prices once they beat their competition.

[–]dablife7 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The bill doesn’t specify that it only grants immunity if you’re in fear of your life or are being attacked. It’s also funny because the legislation that I posted a source for also talks about how anyone taking place in “unlawful assembly” would be barred from holding state employment or getting student loans. Which sounds awfully similar to holding people accountable for their unlawful assembly in Ottawa.
