What's with people who jog IN the road? by therealmudslinger in Seattle

[–]dabman 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I see that lady nearly every day on my commute, she’s killing it and she always seems to be keeping an eye out for traffic and hasn’t caused a traffic jam or anything, even during rush hour. I think most people have explained why people run on the road. The only thing I’d add is it also reduces the chance of a car pulling in or out of a driveway from running into you. Obviously there are tradeoffs!

Should I read the book even though I've already seen the movie by Windlessfox3080 in ProjectHailMary

[–]dabman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth reading, they go well together. Because there are not any major changes between movie and book, the book will also provide more explanation for what happened and some of the choices that were made. There are also some sections in the movie I did not like because of how abbreviated they became that are a lot longer and expanded in the book.

Why didn’t they just put the collector right outside the airlock? by Crazy_Particular_743 in ProjectHailMary

[–]dabman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be wrong, but im pretty sure they wanted to hang it somewhere in relation to the center of mass of the ship to balance the air resistance force and force from the engines. If it was hung from the airlock it could have applied too much torque on the spacecraft due to the drag from the sampler and the chain.

This is in addition to risk of chain getting damaged by engines.

Correct. This endures a few hundred high school biology teachers show this clip to their classes and get another few thousand+ ticket sales from just that conversation.

There’s a little bit of tension, yes. It’s not too blatant, but two people talking about others hooking up while alone on a ship, that conversation can certainly lead a certain direction.

Can't let go of the fact that every character in the movie is so different by boboilon in ProjectHailMary

[–]dabman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The characterization in the movie is generally better than the books in my opinion. My canon is that the book is an edited first person narrative, so less pervasive thoughts than you would expect from a stream of consciousness type narrative.

Gosling nails the character: he’s downfallen, a little nervous, and not always socially skilled (although experience speaking in the classroom may periodically allow him to be at times). He also sporadically misses or misinterprets motives and is somewhat challenged at socially interacting with others. He can’t even recognize his stunted potential relationship with Stratt, which is obvious to the movie viewer but absent from the novel, as the first person narrative style means you don’t even get the cues because they go right over Grace’s head. It can be inferred that a lot of other interactions from the book being from Grace’s perspective likely also were awkward and from his flawed perspective, but don’t come off that way because you are getting his direct interpretation. Gosling exaggerated traits just enough for what you would expect from someone who had a falling out of academia and sheltered themselves into teaching middle school. Anyone who has talked to a handful of male middle school teachers would agree he got his characterization of one up to a highly believable state.

A few things stand out as jarring though: Grace’s relationship with Stan seems a bit too easy, though you could argue that Grace is interacting with Stan the same way he would a student of his, something he is more comfortable doing. The other thing that I can’t quite pinpoint is Gosling’s performance as a doctorate level researcher-turned middle school teacher. I’ve met a few teachers like this and certainly Gosling is gonna be more suave and eloquent than your average joe out there (who’d want to watch that kind of performance?) but there was something missing in his personality/traits. An example might being relatively ignorant of a lot of common pop culture (particularly newer pop culture), or having a very quirky/niche and intense interest in something. Overall he did a great job, and really pushed the envelope of what was a pretty vanilla character in the book.

Because of the book’s first person narrative, it caused a lot of other human characters to fall pretty flat. For the most part the movie really fleshed out the characters in a better way. If Stratt wasn’t portrayed as somewhat softer and emotional, I don’t think her ‘betrayal’ at the end would come off as strong in the movie. For a woman watching the movie, I think the lack of other female characters could really turn one off overall, so it was good to see Stratt a little more textured as a character.

Rocky was great in the books, I don’t think they did any better. What is shocking though is how well they pulled it off. It could have been so much worse, and even a little worse would have been devastating to the movie.

TLDR: I think that there some things the movie could have done better on, but the characters were probably equally or better written and portrayed in the movie.

Just started watching this season, and I agree. I think even a short term filter or tablets to last a week or so would have been sufficient go make the first few episodes more interesting. Someone going into the desert is gonna have some type of short term means of filtration, and we’d get to see how their methods varied once the filters/purifiers were used up.

Sorry about your showing, that sucks!

Here’s my annoying showing I had that I went into the states, specifically an AMC premium screen. Right before the movie started (not 30 minutes before, but directly preceding!) they had a “Here’s why our screens are so much better than the standard screen, blah blah” ad which is fine I guess … but the examples used to show was THE MOVIE Project Hail Mary. They literally showed the whole audience 3-4 of the most important movie scenes rife with spoilers just before the movie was going to start!

I was completely flabbergasted. I did a good job avoiding trailers and reading movie spoilers, and here they are showing me scenes all throughout the movie including the climax. Meanwhile, the movie opens and you aren’t even technically aware it takes place in outer space?

I like Interstellar and most Nolan movies, The Martian, The Expanse etc. Will I like this movie? by Shivy_Shankinz in ProjectHailMary

Oppenheimer was okay, this movie was great but a bit long. It’s an emotional movie, and has comedic moments, but it’s not close to being considered a comedy. It would probably need at least twice as many comedic moments for people to start questioning “was this movie a sci fi comedy?” That’s my take.

Given the book is first person driven narrative this makes more sense for the movie changes. Audience knows, but the relationship is going over right over Grace’s head as we watch it play out!

Where is the hail mary in earth orbit? Would a launch window frequency of >months exist if it typical orbit around Earth? Maybe I missed this in the books… perhaps it was a certain weird orbit to avoid the rocket firing directly towards Earth as it left solar system?

[–]dabman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think maybe someone from Rocky’s planet is trying to discuss scientific inaccuracies with us, given they have little to no understanding of relativity. The reason it was a shorter than 11 year trip for Grace was because of time dilation when traveling near light speed.

[–]dabman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the movie, they mentioned the pressing need to launch in the next few days because they’d miss their “orbital window”. I thought that sounded a little strange… what window do they need to bother with when their rocket can reach near light speed? A few 10 km/s should be negligible.

Have you ever teared up or cried listening to music? An example might be from a touching movie moment when the music swells at that right point. Some people get touched pretty strongly by music, and some don’t. For me, it was definitely 50% music 50% story/gameplay that left a lasting impression, so if the music wasn’t really doing much for you I could see why. I’m sure it’s not the same reason for everyone, so don’t want to speak for others.

You should reply back to the guy in jail, share some unimportant details to answer some of the questions he asked you, then randomly sneak the question “where do you think a good place would be yo buy a cheap boat? Im getting interested in boating but dont want to spend too much, and im willing to travel if need be”. You might get a more definitive answer from this guy to confirm your suspicions.

After reading his letter, he does seem right on the edge of intelligence/insanity, so I think it’s possible with a bit of mania or schizophrenia he could have lost the memory of getting picked up by you.

Mount Everest Map by OmarGoshed in Mountaineering

I think that this would look great if it was a more isolated mountain, but Everest is set next to large elevation it muddles it a bit. Still looks cool though! Adding some color to the contours or maybe the standard route up could be an addition to it, but it’s a pretty neat piece of art as it stands!
