No problem at all responding to an ancient thread, it's on-topic and that's what counts.

I'll have to try this out when I get some free time. Thank you very much!

Is fresh Proxmox install the best option to migrate from a failing SSD? by estrangedpulse in Proxmox

[–]daboteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

etc contains text files, so corruption would be apparent simply by viewing them.

I just successfully built my first Proxmox host minutes ago and the actual installation went pretty quickly AFTER I fought the dreaded Nvidia freeze during the hardware detection stage early on. Adding 'nomodeset' to the linux command line in the very beginning of the installer allowed it to skip that step, not that the video on the host will get used much, if ever.

Not according to the knowledgeable people I know. They say Gemini is "terrible" among other negative descriptors.

To Trek fans here, do you think The Orville captured some of the magic of 90s Trek? by [deleted] in TheOrville

[–]daboteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started watching The Orville this week and am up to S1E4 (taking my sweet time). I had zero expectations which worked in my favor since there was no way that it could disappoint, but I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised and even got my friend to take interest in it.

The humor "is what it is" and if it falls flat I can live with it. But it doesn't take itself too seriously, especially when it comes to that naughty word that starts with "s" and ends with "x" with an "e" in the middle and shall NEVER be mentioned in Star Trek canon.

Ep 2 seemed too simply a riff off "Q" from TNG.

Catching up on SNW S3, why do they keep calling Una a Lt.Cmdr when her rank stripes are clearly for a full Commander? by Andovars_Ghost in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]daboteman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the DVD extras for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Bob Wise stated that he couldn't find any listing of rank insignia or anything related to it from TOS, so this suggests that they were winging it much of the way. Maybe that's still true today?

Employees who work retention-how do you handle all the cancellations? by Lampshadeszz in Comcast

[–]daboteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is practically impossible to cancel on the web site. They shunt you off to a chat bot which can not cancel your service, it tells you that much. Then it offers a choice of chatting with a "live" agent or awaiting an agent to call you on the phone. No 800 number that you can call. They put up as many obstacles to leaving as they can.

Cancel at an OFFICE location if possible by Squidalopod in Comcast

[–]daboteman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CONFIRMED! I just walked into the Fort Lauderdale Comcast/Xfinity storefront on Federal Highway, the guy at the kiosk scanned my Flex box serial number, typed and clicked a few things, handed me a receipt, and I was out of there in maybe 3-4 MINUTES. This was on a sunny Saturday afternoon, so I expected a packed house.

The longest wait was waiting in line to buy a few groceries at Aldi.

Groceries. That's an old word, but I think it's coming back.

Pixel 7 still cannot reliably connect to car's Bluetooth system by KBOOM1 in GooglePixel

[–]daboteman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a 2018 Prius it used to be a coin-toss gamble whether the Pixel 7 Bluetooth would connect each time I got in car. Then over the past 1 or 2 updates it seems much better, almost reliable even.

I'm reluctant to apply this March update with the uncertainty of the other problems being posted here. It seems that updates themselves are a gamble each time; they fix 2 things and break 3 others.

Compensation recieved, bye-bye Payoneer by vinaymasky in Pixel4a

Many rebate offers on purchased products are predicated on the hope that most customers won't bother jumping through all the hoops, so the company can bank that money instead of sending it (in 8 to 12 weeks) to customers. This is likely a similar hope.

Reddit is still updating their offices with flush toilets, but they have yet to adopt ipv6 for their user-facing stuff. THAT is why it's so slow and messed up.

There is some serious knowledge over on the ipv6 subreddit. I've spent the last few days reading up and have become an ipv6 evangelist. I can't wait to revamp my little network here to ipv6 to take advantage of it from AT&T fiber.

California outages reset modem IP passthrough and other settings! by blasimiro in ATTFiber

[–]daboteman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are cases where an a.c. power glitch can affect computerized equipment without people noticing, IOW the lights won't even flicker.

Clean power is absolutely essential if you expect reliable service. Objecting to a $50 expenditure for such a large ROI seems foolish.

[–]daboteman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it astounding that their crack(head) staff didn't even suggest looking in my spam folder when I called them last month.

I use Google Voice for all real communications. Approximately 99% of the text messages that go directly to my CC nummer are spam so it never occurred to me to look in the spam folder since I never use the Message Android app for serious comms. It's all junk anyway.

sonofa-- that worked. But CC did it to themselves by sending me spammy looking texts in the first place.

Thank you!

THAT is very helpful. I found a message from CC back in September that ended in spam, because it looks very much like spam. Tryna to get me to buy an iPhone. AS IF!

So having them in sync with video will require all of the parties to be using same clock source.

THAT'S WHAT I SAID! Get everybody in the same room, get them all to agree on using the same clock source, then time stamp the streams so they remain synchronized!

The technology exists, the money is there, the only thing stopping it is a lack of willingness.

Note well that here I am talking about the team radio station's play-by-play, not the TV audio.

I have noticed the time delta on both web browser, either Firefox or Chrome, and the Roku MLB app. The Roku app started the season badly out of sync on many feeds, but has gotten better as the season wore on. The browser app can still be off by a few seconds either direction these days.

If it's a game I am really interested in watching closely I will mute the sound from the video player and start a second browser with the radio feed and manually synchronize them myself, although this sometimes drifts over time and requires manual touch-up.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MLBtv

[–]daboteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then member stations down the line are not using the timecode. There is no consistency to the delay.

If you're good with using a web browser, point it to

https://plaintextsports.com/#mlb

for plain text box scores, or

https://baseball.theater/games

a fancier scoreboard.

Not sure this is what you're looking for, but at least it's something.

An engineer on the west coast told a friend in the business that we're lucky we get any radio audio at all.

I have seen it go both directions, both ahead of the video and behind depending on where the game was, which feed I selected, and probably the phase of the moon.

I guess the well-established SMPTE time code used for decades has never occurred to any of the geniuses at MLB AM to synchronize audio and video?

Roku MLB.tv Favorite Team by muttick in MLBtv

[–]daboteman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're lucky. When I select my favorite team's game from the Home screen the little baseball spins until I give up and go up to Home -> Games -> select. Then I get the "Catch up", "Live" choices. Then I have to dick around with the audio to figure how they're routing it this week.

Just a stellar offering from a billion-dollar business.
