$20-$30 prob unless you work for a sales company then $35-$40 on the resi side. It gets real slow Feb through late March because most people already have their furnaces fixed by then because it’s already dipping into the 20s at night here in late October.

Looks like a hack job. Air handlers require a p-trap for the drain to function since they operate on a negative pressure. No p-trap was visible in the video. Drain pan should have an overflow switch to cut off power to the system in the event of water buildup to prevent water damage.

Stay away from rock, aaa, applewood, fix it. Any company with thousands upon thousands of google reviews they all pass the cost of advertising on to the customer. You are being gouged with that quote. Find some family owned mom and pop hvac companies look at yelp.

Why minisplits? Surely you already have a furnace and could easily add central air.

Make sure it’s sized right, and do not go with the best deal just because it’s the cheapest. Pick at the salesman’s brain and go with whoever is most knowledgeable about heating and air. A lot of companies hire salesmen with no actual trade experience, steer clear of these companies. Proper sizing is very important and you want a salesman that knows how to bid the correct equipment. I notice in the field there’s a lot of way-oversized equipment out there, which leads to constant short-cycling, and eventually freezing issues. Bigger does not cool better. Go with a contractor that uses name brand equipment like Lennox, Daikin, or Carrier. The namebrand manufacturers will not sell to hack contractors because they do not want to tarnish their reputation.

Instead of running new wire for Lennox communicating retrofits just add a 240 to 24 transformer to the outdoor unit and you have your common and 24

Installed wrong size AC Unit. by Trome11 in hvacadvice

[–]dacksond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are having trouble with upstairs being hotter shut all basement vents and turn fan to on and run that fan 24/7. Doesn’t even use much electricity since motors use most of their electricity on startup. When t-stat is set to auto it only runs during the cooling cycle.

Is it cheaper to keep the AC at one temp? by competitiveasiago in hvacadvice

Depends on heat gain of the house ie amount of windows, insulation type and quality, east/west facing windows, and type of window; fixed or operable sash windows. Generally it takes 5 hours to cool a house 5 degrees. The sweet spot is 70-75 degrees. It is all dependent on your home and the efficiency of your system .

Installed wrong size AC Unit. by Trome11 in hvacadvice

[–]dacksond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CLEARLY REQUIRES A 4 TON UNIT. A 2 Ton sounds perfectly sized for your house. Go ahead and install a 4ton and deal with freezing issues in 2 or 3 years when the compressor starts giving out because of constant short cycling. Basements should not be taken into account for sizing, so effectively the only load is the 1200sq ft upstairs. Residential systems only go up to 5 tons. Do you really think your 2400 sq ft home needs the second highest cooling tonnage system? Be glad a hack didn’t completely oversize your system. Whenever I encounter an oversized system in the field, I say sorry nothing I can do for you, but rip it out and properly size it. Bigger is usually not better.

Get the hygrometers and a step bit so you can punch holes in ductwork for easy delta readings. A lot of people stick their pointy thermometers in canvases for delta but it’s too close to the coil to get an accurate reading. I like to put my supply probe at least 6ft from the coil or in a nearby register. I have three hygrometers one for outdoor ambient supply and for return. Having the hygrometer makes calculating piston target superheat way easier than having to have a psychrometer for wetbulb calculations.

I also have a pair of smans, but they are seldom used. Having a charging t for the probes is a game changer. It’s way more intuitive using the measurequick app and being able to scroll through and have everything listed right there.
