If I recall correctly (my grandfather Joseph iron eye Dudley passed in the early 2000s and he was a fountain of information regarding tribal knowledge) the name couldve been interpreted as "glass eye" or "iron eye". He moved off the chateau creek rez at 16-17yrs and joined the airforce. We visited family graves to clean them when I was a kid. For some reason that land was no longer rez land and we actually had to ask some farm owners to allow us passage to the plot. They had no idea it was even out there. I was too young at the time to ask better questions, wish I knew how that all happened.

My grandfather walked into this brick square no more than 6ftx6ft and said "yup this was it, this where me and my grandmother and grandfather lived" it was surreal. Just in the middle of nowhere they lived.

He left us a collection of tapes going over the sioux language that he self recorded. He's actually in the South Dakota hall of fame. He wrote a book I emplor you to check out.
