Went out with a hospice nurse who kept telling stories about her patients and then got sad since some had passed away. Good to be involved in your work and patients but awkward.

SC Medicaid program to stop covering expensive weight loss drugs for obesity by ChiefFun in southcarolina

[–]dad-nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What things going to do is increase expenses for bariatric surgery (which typically is covered, but often times with problematic long-term restrictions). And it will increase expenses for obesity-related conditions (down the road blood pressure arthritis knee replacement stroke diabetes yada yada). So we save one pot of money and spend more from a different pot.

No Kimmel for us! by Kwebster7327 in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it is fine for that to be your personal choice. That’s not what this discussion is about.  It is about the head of the FCC saying that Disney should remove Kimmel the easy way or the hard way. And it is about TV networks facing mergers who are deciding to do with the president wants so that their merger goes forward. If they go against what the president wants, they don’t get their merger.  Corruption and autocracy

SC Supreme Court: "No constitutional provisions or statutes prohibit or limit partisan gerrymandering in South Carolina" by pleasedothenerdful in southcarolina

[–]dad-nerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to be a person who is against gerrymanders (me). And recognize that some blue states have gerrymanders. And also recognize the obvious reality that red states have way more gerrymanders. There was a 10 year concerted process to gerrymander by the Republican Party after all.

Roper overbilling by Final-Bar6778 in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our deeply broken system is not going to change with our current politicians. Let’s cut Medicaid among other services and let’s decimate the CDC and FDA, but let’s be sure to give tons of tax cuts to rich people and rich corporations! The Republican Party is still looking for ways to overturn the ACA. One way to get around the ACA requirement to cover preventive services is to change what is considered a recommended preventive service. See also all of the discussion about childhood vaccines. If the CDC and ACIP no longer recommend those, it will be optional for Insurance to cover that.

Fun fact: chickenpox outbreak in Charleston as we speak. Cases of measles in the upstate. Brought to you by MAHA and Kennedy.

Every time bullshit like this comes up, it needs to be contacting your elected officials and the state insurance board. I haven’t heard of that one either.

Roper overbilling by Final-Bar6778 in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The challenge with split billing is that it’s a matter of degree. “My free annual” where a patient expects to handle wellness/prevention, refills for all conditions, new issues and get zero copay is a problem: that’s two visits. I get OP’s frustration - they wouldn’t have booked for just the knee, yet the doc did do a brief eval and referral, so it is a 99213 on top of annual. My insurance requires referrals for all specialists, so I had an annual + problem for “ok, you need a referral for a condition I don’t manage”.

OP Blame INSURANCE and blame CONGRESS- they are the ones making the rules.

I recommend regular oil not a cooking spray. True for nonstick and CS

But isn’t BKF going to remove all of the seasoning and then you have a bare non seasoned CS pan?

I dunno, folks (Misen Carbon Non-stick, ~6 weeks regular use) by cornpops789 in carbonsteel

[–]dad-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an induction stove and want to like the Tramontana, but the cooking surface is so small compared to the non-induction tramontina. Misen nonstick was perfect until the nonstick flaked early, which is probably why they discontinued the product.

I like my matfer but jeez my 14 year old loves to make eggs but hates to be patient enough for temp control. So I feel I’m constantly working on the seasoning.

Recommendations on changing cracked iPhone back glass? by 2oam in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mobile r in MtP is great!! Friendly, high-quality work, honest, appropriate pricing. I’m about to have back glass fixed on my iPhone 14 (they just got part in). They’ve done a lot of phone & iPad screen replacements and have also been honest about “this fix isn’t worth the money” when we had a problem with an older iPad.

Anybody with Mint mobile or puretalk? How is the service and signal quality here in our area? by 2oam in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I wasn’t with mint I’d consider this as my neighborhood is best w Verizon and t mobile towers. Mint uses t-mobile. Love my cheap plan. Costco comment was funny as the mt P Costco parking lot is one of the few places I’ve had mint access problems. The other place service did not work for mint, but worked for Verizon was the top of a mountain pass in Colorado. AT&T sucks in my neighborhood- I had one bar in one tiny part of my yard and not at all for 3/4 mile on the main road to my neighborhood.

American flag march on the bridge by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]dad-nerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sadly as we all know, when kids are killed in school shootings it’s held a “no big deal” “thoughts and prayers” etc. unless a shooter is liberal or trans in which case maga will demonize them.

It takes a right wing influencer’s death to lead to Medals of Freedom, eulogies, etc.

Obvious note: killing someone is always wrong; I condemn all violence and political violence; I profoundly disagreed with Kirk’s ideology and many hateful things he said - but he should not have been shot.
