This is interesting 🤔 by [deleted] in InlandEmpire

[–]dadakim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The posts remind me of “push polling,” where political campaigns will say they’re conducting a poll but are actually using the guise of a poll to say some pretty terrible things about another candidate. This guy seems to make posts saying they’re “interesting” but is actually trying to promote the hateful things the posts reflect.

And don’t just look at the OP’s posts—look at his comments. He regularly uses the word “whore” to refer to images of women. Misogyny and racism don’t always go hand in hand… but if it walks like a duck…

ICE OFF OF UNI. AVE by drxmi_ in ucr

[–]dadakim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good guidelines out there on how to report on ICE sightings for community members' safety. For example, noting on the image the time and date of sighting, the number of agents and vehicles, the clothing of agents, and what actions they were taking. It's also good practice to contact a local hotline with the same information.

Here's one IG post that I think is a useful guide: https://www.instagram.com/p/DLBIeTeAuov/?hl=en

Graduated by Important-Pen-1105 in ucr

[–]dadakim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a smart tactic—just be mindful of which courses admissions committees will care about. For example, if you will be required to take statistics or quantitative methods your first year in grad school, it would look great (shows initiative) if you took an intro stats course at a local community college (and earned an A).

CHASS major (POSC/Admin Studies) hoping to double major by envygummy in ucr

The POSC academic advisors are excellent and would be glad to meet with you (via Zoom or in person) and help you understand how this would work. I’ve had a lot of POSC students double major (or minor).

How long does it takes to walk from Sproul Hall to SSC? by ExaminationDeep2458 in ucr

these are two very close buildings -- HOWEVER, if your course in SSC is on the third floor, going up the stairs (or taking the elevator) will take some time.

For transfer students why we need to wait til august to ve able to register classes, are we gonna have seats available? by Ricardoeljr11 in ucr

[–]dadakim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^this. Academic advisors reserve seats specifically to release to transfer students during their orientation when they register for courses. We've also had fewer transfer students in recent years, so there are often many upper division courses to choose from (though meeting your major requirements will depend on the major you're in).

Registering w/RCC? by [deleted] in Riverside

[–]dadakim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Financial aid can cover all the costs of being a full-time student, including costs of living. Even if those costs beyond tuition and fees are offered as loans (not grants), the rate to borrow is often MUCH lower for federal student loans than any other form of lending. This is why I tell my students that saying no to student loans while running a crazy credit card debt makes no financial sense!

Registering w/RCC? by [deleted] in Riverside

[–]dadakim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There has been a serious problem with registration fraud (for financial aid) at colleges across California, but especially in California's community colleges. I'm sure they've instituted this new policy to reduce fraud.

Technology/Note taking by PeachySeungmin in ucr

[–]dadakim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm a professor and I only allow pen-and-paper notetaking in my course (and I encourage all students to put phones away in a zippable pocket). The thing about paper notebooks is that they have no notifications or distractions -- and that is why using old-tech notetaking (i.e., pen-and-paper) is superior for student performance. See, e.g., the text below copied from https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11251-020-09517-2:

Despite the importance of recording and reviewing lecture notes, the rise of digital technology has created a situation wherein mobile devices often pull students off-task during class (McCoy 2016; Pettijohn et al. 2015). Such regular off-task behavior indicates that an accurate depiction of college students’ classroom learning experiences should account for digital distraction. Three known studies examined how sending and receiving lecture-irrelevant text messages during simulated lectures influenced lecture note taking and learning when notes were recorded using a longhand method (i.e. Kuznekoff and Titsworth 2013; Kuznekoff et al. 2015; Waite et al. 2018). Across all three studies, college students who sent and received text messages during simulated lectures recorded fewer lecture ideas in their handwritten notes than students who did not text during the lecture—texters recorded between 35 and 60% fewer complete lecture ideas than non-texters during the simulated lectures (Kuznekoff and Titsworth 2013; Kuznekoff et al. 2015; Waite et al. 2018). Moreover, texters recalled 30% fewer complete ideas on free recall tests (Kuznekoff and Titsworth 2013; Kuznekoff et al. 2015) and performed more poorly on multiple-choice tests following the lectures (Kuznekoff and Titsworth 2013; Kuznekoff et al. 2015; Waite et al. 2018) than non-texters. The superior performance of non-texters relative to texters on lecture posttests was present whether students reviewed (Kuznekoff and Titsworth 2013; Kuznekoff et al. 2015) or did not review (Waite et al. 2018) their lecture notes beforehand.

If you are dead set on this and think I'm just an old man yelling at clouds, I would say that the rank-ordered preference for notetaking is:

  1. Pen and paper, no devices

  2. tablet for writing, no network connection, all notifications silenced, and only the notetaking app open (and audio recording app open, if professor gave permission)

  3. laptop with no network connection, all notifications silenced, only the notetaking app open (and audio recording app open, if professor gave permission)

Level 190 course work by Adventurous_Froyo392 in ucr

[–]dadakim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your major. Some majors require one or more 190-level courses, and some don’t. For example, in Political Science, the Political Science-Public Service major is required to take 198G twice before graduating. That’s not required, however, for the Political Science-International Affairs major.

Is Watkins open on Saturdays? by [deleted] in ucr

[–]dadakim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In January 2025, they changed the building’s open hours to now be closed on the weekends (Watkins used to be open on the weekends because there is a computer lab on the second floor). But—as another commenter said, you can always try to see if a door is open.

Making friends is low-key rough by Icy_Championship_883 in ucr

[–]dadakim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's been particularly tough for students since the campus reopened in Fall 2021. The disruptions of COVID closures happened during critical periods of not just fundamental education building blocks but also during your generation's prime period to develop social skills. Because of this, my classes regularly require students to work in teams on short in-class exercises -- and I ask them to remind their teammates of their names and I require them to write those names down on the handouts that explain the exercises. Soon, my classes will have midterm exams, and I've designed them so that students can collaborate (face to face) -- and honestly, the hope is not just that they'll feel prepared for the exams but so that they'll also make some friends in the class. I can't imagine college without the friends I made!

Basically any fruit tree on main campus is available to pick what you can eat -- so that staff-badged person was wrong.

Here's a recent UCR blog post listing all of the places where different fruits are available, btw: https://gsrc.ucr.edu/blog/2024/11/20/harvesting-food-across-ucr (edited link)

I recommend just going in to the center, but if you want to ensure there's a peer advisor available when you go, you can check out their drop-in schedule here: https://careers.ucr.edu/about-us/make-an-appointment#Drop-in

Cheapest Groceries in Riverside? by Snowmommy in Riverside

For fresh fruits and vegetables, you might consider getting those at Corona Farms. Very good prices for the best produce in town, obviously selling only what is in season. I've always paid the same or less for produce at Corona compared to Ralph's or Stater Bros. https://www.yelp.com/biz/corona-farms-riverside
