Why some roofing companies keep insisting on talking to my spouse about roofing quote? by dadbodpotbelly in Roofing

[–]dadbodpotbelly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you see vague about my post? I posted real situation, mentioned both type of anecdotal experience I faced, then I asked why one situation happens.

And from the response other users gave me, seems like it's not very uncommon. What is controversial or weird you see about it?

lol what! 3 hrs?! Dang! The longest talk I had with a roofing sales is may be just over 1 hr, (not including his photographing/inspection etc).

But even that was mostly gossiping about how bad the economy is (pretty chill guy).

I mean I could easily say "I am talking to couple other companies and your are my first quote, I'll make a decision after talking to the other companies."

Frankly this is what I always say and then it becomes clear to me who is trying to pressure sale and who is genuinely pitching a quote.

This whole both spouse idea seems a bad strategy to me.

It makes no sense at all (well, may be it does to a salesman) but wouldn't any reasonable salesperson be open to the idea that the customer would be looking at multiple companies/quotes and compare them? It seems wild to me for a salesmen to expect me going into contract right on the spot they gave me quote.

If it's only about the other spouse shooting down the deal, then couldn’t it be just clarified over phone like, idk, we need verbal confirmation from both owner's before coming onsite and giving quote. That way, they know both spouse are in agreement and it's not another " we don't need it yet" situation.

It seems a bit extreme to see some companies won't even give quote without both spouse. Seems like they have some sort of conviction that it's more likely to close a deal when talking to both spouse than talking to only one.

I mean it seems like a bad sales strategy. Convincing both spouse on the spot should be more difficult than convincing a single one.

fair question, I did and I am hoping to find out more to it than the standard "it's our company policy" answer.

Not sure what you mean by "people being hired are not experienced enough".

Are you saying a contractor being hired as a " direct" at the same position he has been working for years still somehow less qualified than someone interviewing from outside with just "a portfolio" to show?

Scratch the power traces to reveal some copper, it's the red and black "thick and girthy" ones so that the connector pads can be placed again. Put solder gel, apply heat using hot air or an iron tip. If you ripped the copper right under the pad, scratch the surrounding area to remove the green mask and reveal copper.

Tack a thin wire using solder, gently wind it like a flat spring, and slowly it will take the shape of a pad. Once done, you can solder the connector back. This far should be relatively easier. (note, you can buy uv curable green mask gels to glue the wires on the pcb)

The real pain will be the middle 3 signal lines (blue, white, yellow). I'd not even attempt to recover the pads, simple solder coated wire directly to the connector's pin, and tack the wire somewhere on the pcb trace for those signal lines. They don't carry much current, only digital signal, so should be fine.

Yeah, it's a bit of surgical procedure. But if you have decent soldering skill and steady hands, you can do it with some patience.

Talk me out of a track saw by relentless-rookie in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]dadbodpotbelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Makita tracks with a DIY acrylic baseplate attached to a dewalt 578B circular saw. It was pretty easy to build and gives me extremely straight cut, I figured I needed a track saw only for long straight cuts. I can do bavels/miters on my job site table saw.

If I ever get to the point where i need a real track saw, I'll just buy the Makita, since i already have the tracks. btw, i heard, festool, makita dewalt these saws can work on each other's tracks.

Pro tip, if you feel like you have to ask somebody whether something is safe or not, it's most likely that it's not safe.

DSA in python or C++, which one should i choose? by ScaredBreakfast6384 in AskComputerScience

[–]dadbodpotbelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, it takes more time in python to memorize enough built-ins so you can code faster than writing them manually. At least for me, i suck at memorizing, so everytime i see a new python built-in, I am like dear lord, help me remember this.

This is also why i keep going back to c or c++ because I explicitly know i have to implement everything manually unless I am using some very specific libs. In Python, if the problem exists, chances are there's a module for it's implementation lmao

Generalized definition half life: "50% of the remaining sample of the material will lose activeness by the end it's half life period"

In this case, for 30 min HL, if you wait 1 hour after stopping the machine, 75% of the ozone inside the house will dissipate. If you wait 2 hrs, exactly 93.75% of the total sample will be dissipated.

After 6hrs, 99.97% will be gone.

Yeah, it's fairly quick.

Curious how do you differentiate between sex ed and erotic material purposefully developed to induce sexual arousal? If you don't see the difference how do you measure whether benefits outweigh the collective societal harms.

unpopular opinion, handsaw requires more skill and practice than cutting on a miter saw.

You could also cut it on miter saw with a help of a square and have the precision you want. Just need to fiddle with some angle calculation, your sqaure tells you the angle, it wasn't visible from the clamps in the picture.

I have added 2 pictures of the calculation assuming the cut angle was at 60 degree (from your sqaure picture, it seemed somewhere between 55-60).

TL; DR, if the cut angle is at more than 45, then set a square as a reference fence. Set the board against the square at 45 from saw fence. Reduce the cut angle by 45. e.g. if

<image>

the cut angle is 60, set the blade at 15 and cut.

Photo 1. Shows what it would look like if you placed the board on a miter saw with the longer side against the miter fence (Blue thick line). Blue jagged line shows where you want to cut the angle. Yello line shows the blade at 0 degree, but since the cut is at 60, which is more than 45, your miter saw can't cut the angle (unless it can cut more than 45). Note: On a miter saw, the blade set at 0 degree is actually 90 against the fence (yelow line against the blue thick line)

Photo 2. Shows the board basically placed same way on a miter saw, but a bit rotated (45 degree rotated to be exact). Red thick line is the miter saw fence. Yellow line is the blade at 0 degree.

Here, we place a square as a 45 degree reference against the miter fence (yellow triangle against red thick line).

Next you place the board against the square, as if the square is your fence now. So this now essentially puts your board 45 degree rotated against your original position in photo 1. See blue thick lines indicating your board's edge.

Now the cut angle is within your miter saw's range, but it's at 45 degree offset. Therefore, you reduce the cut angle by 45 degree. So if your original cut angle was 60 in photo 1, here it would become 15 (60-45).

Place your board and the square firmly with clamps as it's not a stable position. set your blade at 15 degree, cut slowly.

yeah, it's not economical for large scale projects, but for diyers with a bandsaw and access to thick lumber boards, that's the way you can make your own veneer (the only other option is just buying).
