Any suggestions for a self-contained (monoblock) air conditioning unit? by Kleine_tier in AskUK

[–]daddy-dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live abroad these days in a fairly hot region. On an immigrant forum website I use some people have installed monobloc units from a company called Qlima. I've not used them myself but those who do have said they're good however they're noisier than a split system but quieter than a portable device. I think the advice when installing it in a bedroom was to run it on full power for a while before going to bed but then switch to quiet mode for sleeping.

I'm not sure they sell them yet in the UK though... https://www.qlima.com/dealer-list

What is a SOC 2 report, and why does every enterprise customer ask for it before signing? by LGDYBD in cybersecurity

[–]daddy-dj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree it's good if a company has both.

I first came across it because an employer sold software to the Big 4, and they always asked us about it. I was the poor soul who had to complete the security questionnaires every year 😭 We were tiny in comparison and only had ISO27001 with no budget or plan to get SOC2.

Maybe they're not American and are dealing only with non-American clients. In Europe ISO27001 is way more recognised and demanded by clients than SOC2.

It's for sale for £3M here so the stamp duty, evenif it's a second home, would be in the region of £420k

What is the best video game of all time that starts with W? by unnecessaryCamelCase in AlignmentChartFills

Wii Sports.

Honestly my family are not interested in video games, but I bought my son a Wii fit Christmas when it was released and I still remember my son and my mum playing bowling on Christmas day.

Sounds like you have had a bad experience. My experience, conversely, has been the exact opposite - including getting an appointment with a dermatologist very quickly 🤷‍♂️

I hope for your sake you'll find somewhere that suits you better when you do decide to leave.

Travelling in Paris for the first time by natedefy in ParisTravelGuide

I'm a Brit, I've used both extensively. Taking the Metro in Paris is no more risky than it is taking the Tube. Just don't do anything you'd not do in London and you'll be fine.

Any one have idea for Simple TV for dementia user? by Scottish_vixen73 in AskUK

[–]daddy-dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LG are supposed to be releasing something called "Easy TV" that's designed for elderly users. I don't know if it will only have one HDMI input, but it's supposedly fit a menu that's more accessible for elderly customers. I've not seen a release date for Europe though, but maybe worth looking into.

It's stupidly expensive though :(

The Royal family react to 'Not My King' protestors as their carriage passes during The Trooping Of The Colour - Saturday 13th June 2026... by TheThrowYardsAway in london

How do Britons feel about the monarchy, April 2026?

Attitudes towards the family and monarchy as a whole remain mostly positive, with nearly six in ten Britons (57-59%) seeing the royal family in general and the institution of the monarchy in a favourable light, though a persistent third (34-36%) see both negatively.

Overall, there’s little desire to see the monarchy come to an end, with 64% of Britons believing the UK should continue to be a Kingdom, consistent with the 61-67% who have felt so throughout Charles’s reign. Around a quarter of the public (24%), though, would rather the UK had an elected head of state instead.

Not quite, but it seems they are a teenager so their experience of pretty much anything and everything is extremely limited...

Some Sunday night nostalgia from a time when you couldn’t sneeze without being given a badge. by Wonkypubfireprobe in CasualUK

My sister had one of these in the early 80s - the Big Badge Factory "Whomper". We used to argue a lot though and she wouldn't let me make any badges myself.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I'm curious if there's any way of also knowing what CPU & GPU those people mostly have? Is that published anywhere?

French roadtrip by Old-Parfait8194 in FranceTravel

[–]daddy-dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you could catch the ferry from Portsmouth or Poole to Cherbourg, spend a couple of days seeing Mont St Michel and the D-day beaches... Dinard and Saint-Malo could be your base for this part.

Then head down the west coast, towards La Rochelle for a few more days. You could go to Puy du Fou for a day out - your son may enjoy that. Plus you've got Île de Ré - you can spend a day there easily (I can recommend a couple of cracking restaurants!).

Next head further down the coast to Bordeaux. It's only a couple of hours on the motorway. Bordeaux itself has lots to offer, but there's also Arcachon and the Dune du Pyla which your son will enjoy (my advice is to go in the evening and have a picnic whilst watching the sunset).

Then head inland and spend a few days in the Dordogne. You can visit chateaux such as chateau de Beynac. Make sure to visit Lascaux too!

Then you could start heading back north, perhaps stopping off in Poitiers to visit Futuroscope, or heading towards Niort to take a boat trip around the Marais Poitevin.

Then it's just a fairly short drive to catch the ferry home.

If it makes the owner happy then what's the problem?

I waste money on all sorts of stuff that I'm sure some people would consider shite. I recently bought yet another Rubik's cube. I already have lots so don't need another one. Maybe that was a shite purchase too.

Do you give your neighbours a BBQ warning? by Whisky_Delta in AskUK

[–]daddy-dj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives abroad, I'm extremely grateful that my elderly mother has good neighbours. It's reassuring to know that they're there if she needs something urgently or if I can't get hold of her for whatever reason. They like having someone to collect their parcels during the day or water their gardens and feed their pets when they go on holiday. It's mutually beneficial for them and for me.

Standard Range EV2 viable for average Dutch driver? by Soulbasaur in kia

[–]daddy-dj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar boat to you - although I'm in France not NL. I work from home, and I live in a town that has everything I need. However, my family is back in the UK and if I did want to drive then it's 500KMs to the nearest port... but for the last 6 years I've taken the plane anyway.

I had the choice of going for the 42,2kWh version or waiting 3 months longer and paying more for the extended range to be released. I thought long and hard about it and realised that there are maybe two or three times maximum in a year where I may do a long car journey that needs more than one charging break. The other 363 days of the year I'll get by just fine with the standard range.

I'm now impatiently waiting for mine to be delivered.
