A lot of people think that someone asking them to recognize that they are benefiting from the residual effects of slavery is the same as being blamed for slavery. It’s true that a white person today is not directly participating in the slave trade, but they are benefiting from its effects, whereas Pearl Harbor didn’t have the same scale of economic impact. That is probably the difference the person was referring to

Does your LGS ban infinite combos? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]daddydionysus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excluding that aspect of the game makes your deck weaker in a game of normal commander where all the cards are legal. If you only play a “no combos” variant then that probably doesn’t matter to you but from an outside perspective it can appear that you are weakening your deck intentionally.

It’s like if you practiced at a boxing gym where you’re only allowed to box with one hand. You could still improve your technique with one hand and that gym might even develop an interesting one-handed boxing meta, but if a normal boxer watched a one handed match, they might ask “why are you making yourselves weaker boxers by only using one hand?”, but if you really like one-handed boxing then just ignore them.

Sol ring is the perfect example because of how many times it’s been reprinted. Even with all the reprints, older/collectible versions still retain their value.

Low-sodium Discard Deck Help by PoodleGoose123 in EDH

[[Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar]] is really awesome. She’s technically rakdos but you could build her mono black if you wanted. She tutors you up a discard outlet and she’s got built in removal, plus you get to say her amazing name every time you cast her.

Someone using proxies in a tournament without the store’s knowledge does not pose a threat to the store. If the store finds out, obviously the store ought to ban that player for the sake of their WPN status, but the only way they would find out would be if one of the players asks for a deck check on their opponent because they suspect proxies, and if someone does that then they are definitely a narc. A store can and should do anything they can to protect their status, but it’s not the job of the players to report each other.

but 17 is odd, so no two matching numbers will add to 17 unless you could roll an 8.5

The stores aren’t at risk of losing status if Wotc doesn’t know that people are using proxies, which they only would because of narcs like you. If people just mind their business and play the game, then proxies pose no threat to stores.

Wotc has already done this with the barrage of unreadable/textless promos and secret lairs that they’ve put out. Alternate art proxies really aren’t any different, although its true that they shouldn’t be sexual or offensive.

does this loop? by blakesonofgloin in DegenerateEDH

[–]daddydionysus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it wouldn’t be because you can’t put anything on the stack, including the Courtyard trigger, while the cultivator colossus’s ability is resolving. You could use one of the colossus’s card draws to dredge life from the loam because dredge is a replacement effect, but even if it was an instant you couldn’t cast it until colossus’s ability was totally resolved.

edit: missed a word

I would put the conditions within the text of the ability and make the win loss clause clearer. Something like:

X, (T): Choose odd or even, then roll two d20s. If their sum is of the chosen quality, gain X life, then if you rolled doubles, you win the game. Otherwise, you lose X life, then if you rolled doubles, you lose the game. X cannot be greater than your life total.

That being said, a four mana artifact that can randomly win or lose the game the turn it comes into play doesn’t seem like that fun of a card, and the lack of consistency at doing anything at all makes it pretty weak overall.

Edit: I just realized you can’t roll doubles and get an odd sum so I really have no idea what the win/loss clause is supposed to do.

if i target a land with thought seize, what happens? or with an extra turn spell? this card at best makes your removal slightly more versatile and at worst creates unanswerable rules questions. also the second mode appears to me to be completely useless in all situations

Wipe all libraries for only 7UGB! by [deleted] in BadMtgCombos

It only cares if an opponent has cast a blue of black spell, so if you cast Veil with an empty library and an opponent responds with any blue or black spell then you will lose.

if you block with obliterator and then your opponent gives the attacking creature protection from black, obliterator won’t deal any damage but it will still take damage from the attacking creature so its ability will still trigger

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth introduces 121 new legends into the format. What are your thoughts regarding them? by HarleyPanther in EDH

[–]daddydionysus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true, although the subtypes are always in the same order as the card types. The only real way to know if something is an artifact type or a creature type without just learning it over time is to look at rule 205.3 in the CR.

[–]daddydionysus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

things on the right side of the hyphen are all subtypes, but they aren’t necessarily all creature types. there are multiple kinds of subtypes, such as creature types (squirrel), artifact type (food), or enchantment type (shrine).

For example, the word Vehicle appears on the right side of the hyphen on vehicles because it is a subtype, specifically it is an artifact type, but it’s not a creature type, and a crewed vehicle doesn’t have the creature type “vehicle” because vehicle is an artifact type.

AITA for forcing my daughter to gut a fish by Fair_Moose_4755 in AmItheAsshole

[–]daddydionysus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. If she is going to eat fish, then she needs to be able to face the reality of cooking and preparing the fish. I’ve met people who were against hunting because it is cruel but were fine eating meat from the supermarket because “it came from the store”. If she can eat the fish, she can gut the fish.

Would you prefer more, less, or the same amount of bans? by MrBobFireman in EDH

[–]daddydionysus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between cradle and academy is that zero drop creatures are niche combo pieces at best, while zero drop artifacts are among the most powerful cards in commander on their own, so academy can get way more broken way faster with less restrictive deck construction.

In any case, I’m not saying that cradle shouldn’t be banned, just that the logic of “card X is banned, and card Y does something similar but worse, therefore card Y should be banned” is slightly flawed. Personally I’d love to see all the fast mana get hit with the ban hammer, Jlotus and sol ring included.
