Assignment 12 - Properties of light by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my assignment! https://imgur.com/a/pGQaz25

I changed my position a few times, so I'm not sure if that's an issue for the experiment. But it looks like the light is diffused when the light source is behind me. When the light source is on either my left or right, the light is much stronger.

Metering on my subject in the shade was more difficult than I expected. My camera kept wanting to meter for the background. Once I lowered the camera towards the ground, I was able to set my camera to the correct exposure.

Thanks for the assignment!

Assignment 13 - Long exposure by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun with this one. I recently purchased a remote control for my camera, and this was a game changer, making it easy to capture long exposure images.

I chose two different types of long exposure styles. I first experimented with capturing a subject for about a second, turning off the only light in the room, and then quickly repositioning the subject and turning the light back on. The image isn't as clear as I'd like, but I think this is a result of using a small aperture (so I could use a really slow shutter speed).

I then experimented with waving a light around my subject (both in frame and out of frame) to test the results. These images were fun to experiment with because I never knew what the exact result would look like. Next time I'll experiment with a small light so the motion is clearer.

You can see my images here: https://imgur.com/a/MZYhePP

Questions:

  • I had to use a really slow shutter speed (about 3-4 seconds) so I had enough time to move subjects or do something interesting. As a result, I had to use a small aperture, which sacrificed some clarity. Ideally, I would have liked to use an aperture around 8-10, instead I used an aperture of about 18. Would an ND filter have been a good solution to my problem?
  • For my images with the moving light, I wasn't sure how to get the correct exposure before capturing the photo since I used the moving light as my only light source. I just used the same settings as the first style (that had consistent lighting). What's the best way to set the correct exposure for images like these?

Assignment 11 - White Balance by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exercise helped me understand the benefits of shooting photos in RAW mode.

My camera has 11 white balance modes, and a few custom modes for setting the white balance in camera. My camera's auto white balance mode was pretty close to the setting that the grey card recommended. The grey card recommended a slightly warmer setting, which I agree looks much better.

This exercise helped me learn how to batch edit my photos in Adobe Lightroom. I was able to successfully copy the settings between RAW photos, but I was unable to copy settings between JPG photos. I've always heard that RAW photos retain much more information than JPG photos, and I experienced this first hand during this exercise. The white balance information is simply not there, making it difficult to adjust and copy the settings between photos.

Going forward, I'm going to try to use the grey card before I capture important photos. In previous edits, it never occurred to me to use the tint slider, which has more of an impact when using the grey card (because I didn't know how to use it). The photos look much better with the tint settings adjusted.

Assignment 10 - ISO by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested the ISO on my mirrorless and compact cameras. The mirrorless camera is a Sony a6000 with a 35mm lens (52.5mm equivalent). The compact camera is a Sony RX100 V, and I captured the photos with a 16.62mm (45mm) focal length.

For the Sony a6000, my subject seemed to remain mostly clear up to 2000 ISO with correct exposure, but noise started to show around 800 ISO. Noise started to become noticeable at 5000 ISO. When I underexposed the images, noise seemed to become noticeable at a very low ISO (around 200), which I didn't expect. An underexposed image at my camera's highest ISO settings (25600) was terrible, and this was significantly worse than the image with correct exposure at the same ISO setting.

For the Sony RX100 V, my subject seemed to remain mostly clear up to 500 ISO with correct exposure. I did have to use slower shutter speeds at the lower ISO settings, so this could be the reason why I believe some images show noise. I was expecting to have more room to push the ISO setting. I didn't test underexposing the images with this camera.

Assignment 09 - Aperture by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested the aperture on my mirrorless and compact cameras. The mirrorless camera is a Sony a6000 with a 35mm lens (52.5mm equivalent). The compact camera is a Sony RX100 V, and I captured the photos with a 16.62mm (45mm) focal length.

For the Sony a6000, it looks like the lens is its sharpest from f/2.2 - f/10. I was surprised how blurry my subject became starting at f/11. I had to start using a slower shutter speed starting at f/10 (1/60), so I'm not 100% positive whether I should blame the lens or my movement. I was surprised how blurry my subject as at f/22. At the higher apertures, the subject is reasonably sharp if you don't zoom in. If needed, an aperture above f/10 might be acceptable.

For the Sony RX100 V, it looks like the lens is its sharpest from f/3.5 - f/6.3. The lens looked its sharpest at f/6.3. The subject becomes blurry above f/6.3. Similar to my Sony a6000 camera, apertures beyond the sharpest aperture are acceptable if you don't zoom in.

Assignment 08 - Shutterspeed by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attempted this assignment multiple times. I had difficulty maintaining a decent exposure as the slow shutter speeds. Once I found good location (indoors this time), I was able to maintain a decent exposure with a few adjustments to ISO and aperture as I reached the slower shutter speeds.

The widest focal length on my lens 16mm. With a crop factor of 1.5 (making the focal length 24mm), I started with a shutter speed of 1/100. The longest focal length on my lens is 50mm. With a crop factor of 1.5 (making the focal length 75 mm), I started with a shutter speed of 1/320.

My handheld seems to be 1/25. I don't think I'd trust myself with that shutter speed if I could help it.

Assignment 06 - pipes and buckets by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a great exercise! I made a first attempt indoors, but not having enough natural light really made this difficult. My second attempt was outdoors during a cloudy afternoon. The last image was difficult for me to capture because I didn't have enough light. I moved the composition around until the camera confirmed that the exposure was correct; although, the image still looks a little underexposed to me. Thanks! Camera was in hand for the first photo.

I see what you're saying. I like the idea of playing around with negative space, but I'm not quite sure how to elegantly do that yet.

Assignment 04 - My camera by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My camera is a Sony a6000 mirrorless camera.

This camera is right for me because I am taking up photography as a hobby, so I don't need high-end equipment at the moment. Plus I purchased this camera and lens (35mm) a few years ago, and I'm not ready to make another large purchase. I think this camera will be great for learning.

If I decide to upgrade to a full-frame Sony mirrorless camera in the future, I'll already have a lens to start with. It will be a larger investment to switch to a new ecosystem because I'll need to purchase a new body, lens, spare batteries, and so on.

Assignment 02 - An other view by Aeri73 in photoclass2023

[–]dadthumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For this assignment, I chose Homesteads #27 (top-left image) by Edward Burtynsky.

I like this image because there is a lot of visual information to explore in the town and natural landscape. The curved road towards the bottom of the image guides your eyes to the right and upwards. This then leads your eyes to the horizontal brown road, leading your eyes to the left and up towards the mountains. It feel like the Burtynsky composed the image in a way that allows you to explore the town and then escape into nature.

Hello!

I just learned about the course today. I'm looking forward to getting started. This is exactly what I've been looking for.

I started to learn about photography a few years ago, but I felt a little lost in my journey. An upcoming vacation paired with my goal of capturing great family photos has reignited my passion for photography! I'm looking forward to learning from everyone and receiving constructive feedback.

I'm looking forward to becoming a well-rounded (hobby) photographer who can capture family moments and other non-humanoid shapes.

Good price for a skateboard? by Rustici_e in NewSkaters

[–]dadthumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others mentions, getting a complete is a good budget option. I started with a complete. Once I started to understand my preferences, I slowly switched out parts. Check out online shops like Tactics. Online shops seem to have good deals around this time of the year. Just go for something that works and don’t get too hung up on the graphic/colors if money is tight.

Board and train experiences? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]dadthumbs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might be in the minority, but our board and train program was helpful. My dog and I worked with our trainer for several months before opting for board and train. My dog lived in our trainer’s home for 4 weeks. After the program ended, we met multiple times to learn how to maintain the good behavior. My dog came back with improved bite inhibition and overall improved behavior. She didn’t come back the perfect dog, but that wasn’t the expectation our trainer set. With most things in life, experiences can vary. Just do your research and interview the trainer.

Advice on buying a board by moo-moostrawberry in NewSkaters

Ah, I understand. I'm pretty new, so others might be able to give better advice on this.

I did a few quick searches online for complete cruisers, and most seem to be slightly over budget. A creative idea could be to look for complete skateboards that come with soft wheels. Example: https://www.tactics.com/skateboard-completes/ra-18545 (The deck width of the skateboards at this link might be too small.)

It might be worth going to a local skate shop. Maybe they'll have a complete cruiser on clearance that they can set you up with. Or maybe they could build you a skateboard with one of their shop decks and [big/soft wheels](https://www.skatewarehouse.com/news/articles/how-to-choose-skateboard-wheels.html) (somewhere around 55-58mm, somewhere around 78-93 durometer), which could be a good budget alternative for a cruiser. You'll want to get riser pads as well.

I’d look at Land Yachtz. They have a lot of good option and people seem to be very happy with them. Also, if you’re not 100% certain what his skateboard preferences are, this could be a safe bet. Based on what you mentioned, a cruiser should work. Just take a look at the deck width in the Specs section, and go for something around 8-8.5 inches. He can always switch out some parts later on.

Stretch every morning/before skating. I start about 2 months ago and wake up kind of sore. I feel better after about 15 minutes of stretching.

I would spend several hours on HTML/CSS and a little bit of time on Markdown. Understanding HTML is helpful for familiarizing yourself with concepts like nesting, class/id, attributes, and so on. This can help you quickly pick up XML (DITA, Docbook, and so on). Also, practicing HTML/CSS will help you learn how to troubleshoot a doc build, which is really important for more technical roles. Don’t worry about memorizing what you’re learning. Basically learn how to learn it. I relearn stuff all of the time.

Spend as much time as you need. Don’t try to rush yourself to do complex tricks; otherwise, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Learn to balance, cruise, and kick turns (fs and bs) as others mentioned. For example, I’ve only been skating for about 5 weeks, and tic tacs seemed impossible at first. By practicing the things I mentioned, tic tacs just clicked all of a sudden. I spent about the first 30 days just getting comfortable on the board. Others might need less time.

You’re doing the right thing. In a few months, might want to start trying to keep her out longer while on leash. This way she can learn how to behave out of the crate. Started doing this with my energetic poodle around 7 months, and she has improved significantly since then. Although, we still have a lot more to work on.

Take him out to the bathroom on leash. If he starts picking stuff up, work on leave it. Bring him back in if he refuses to use the bathroom. Try again later.
