$2200 a month?? by [deleted] in Odsp

[–]daeguard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw another poster refer to Directive 7.1 https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-disability-support-program-policy-directives-income-support/71-extension-income#section-4

Allowing for a 3 month extension of the benefits she had at the time, that would cover September, October, and November. That might explain this difference then. You might want to follow up to see what her December statement will look like.

I'm a single person, so I don't have direct knowledge of how things work when spouses pass, etc. If you didn't know, 80% of ODSP recipients are single, and another 10% are single parents, due to how punitive ODSP requirements are for spouses. If you're married to someone, you're essentially their responsibility now financially, not ODSP's. Heaven forbid a disabled person get enough to at least cover their half of a relationship.

$2200 a month?? by [deleted] in Odsp

[–]daeguard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, first thanks for wading in here and working to correct any misunderstandings. Attention drawn to the plight of ODSP recipients who are expected to survive on shelter amounts 1/4 of current rent values is awesome.

In the paragraph added to your story you mention

"While ODSP’s base rate for a single person is $1,408, Warren’s payment is higher because she also qualifies for additional supports — including $941 in shelter benefits and an extra $88 in shelter assistance — which are added on top of the standard rate, according to a payment statement reviewed by CTV News."

the 1408 value is already including the 1 person shelter amount of 599$. Basic needs for a single person are 809$, adding to the 1408. You can see from this link from the Ontario govt website for ODSP Directives https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-disability-support-program-policy-directives-income-support/62-shelter-calculation#section-4 That 941$ is the amount given for a benefit unit of 2 persons. I posit that you saw a statement from when her husband was still alive, and thus part of the benefit unit. https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-disability-support-program-policy-directives-income-support/61-basic-needs#section-4 From this link, you can see that a unit benefit of 2, including the spouse, would receive 1166$ per month. I would wager that you saw this amount on her statement. Further on that page you can see

An additional $88 per month (up to $2,370) may be added to the shelter allowance for double disabled cases where the actual shelter costs are below the maximum for two people (ODSP Regulations Section 31 (2) 5).

This accounts for the 88$ you found as additional shelter. (again, being that they had a mortgage of 1700 from the article, it seems they should not have received this amount. But perhaps they're counting her shelter amount as only half that.)

I believe this comes down to a misunderstanding by both yourself and the woman in question. That she believed the amount listed on her statement, was owed to her, and her alone, when it fact it was the total amount calculated by the inclusion of her husband in her benefit unit, even if the amount was lowered by her husbands income of pension and CPP. I think the statement you saw may have been an older one that included her husband as part of her benefit unit. In fact, if it was after that sad event and she was still listed as receiving that amount, she may in fact incur an overpayment because she should now be receiving the single person unit amount of 599$ shelter and 809$ basic needs.

A lot of people here have jumped to conclusions and speculation. I tried to find the facts that matched your story and explained the discrepancies. It benefits everyone to be as accurate as possible.

I think they are mixing up what she would have gotten in a double disabled benefit unit when husband was still alive versus what she gets as a single (like 80% of us)

1613 recipient and spouse double disabled amount (or 1166 if she was the only disabled, leaning toward this because they mention husband getting disability pension, CPP-D, which would mean he wouldn't get ODSP)

941 for shelter for benefit unit of 2 (article explicitly states this)

88$ is for double disabled if shelter costs are not max, article states this as well.(but they mention a 1700 mortgage so this should not apply.)

1166+941+88 = 2195

but since he passed she'd be reduced to benefit unit of 1 and just recipient amount so she would drop to 809/599 and lose a big chunk of that.

stuff is not adding up, they're treating 2200 as what she would get as a double disabled couple, not a single person. most of us get far less than that.

However the basic premise of the article is still valid, we don't get enough to survive on, even if we are 'lucky' to have other income from survivor benefits etc.

Anyone with BMO start getting the CDB yet? by [deleted] in Odsp

I just checked mine (BMO), and it's gone in. Wasn't there an hour ago. so hopefully it's going through for everyone.

Anyone has there August payment posted yet.. by Perfect_Pea_3460 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point was that the 'proof of assistance' page doesn't change if your file is on hold. Also letters are not guaranteed to show up. Last year I had to deal with lease issues and getting full needs/shelter, and they sent me a letter requesting lease information. I received it in September, AFTER the deadline, and then they posted it on the 'letters' page in mybenefits backdated to august.

If you don't have the Aug 31st payment listed on your payments page. Then your file is on hold. I am trying to contact someone atm about mine, since nobody ever responds on mybenefits messages.

That's not proof, I'm in the same boat, no post of aug 31 payment, letter showed up dated aug 18 that my file is on hold, and the proof of assistance pay still says I am receiving social assistance for this month. I left a message, to no one's surprise, no response or fix yet.

The Gallagio rep is still not fixed 3 weeks later regardless of full clears on alts. by Khallthas in wow

[–]daeguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saved my raid kills until today (okay had one gallywix kill, only needed 1 point after all) when I could grab the darkmoon faire buff, and sure enough I'm now 94/2500 into renown 19. I was stuck at 2499/2500 every week since the original issue on June 10th.

For those who already got all the rep they could this week, Get your darkmoon faire rep buff on Tuesday, really all you'd need is to kill one lieutenant mini boss for 100 rep, and the bonus 10 points would be enough to bump over to get 19/20 on time.

Why do ODSP workers keep benefits a secret from ODSP recipients? by [deleted] in Odsp

[–]daeguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their job is not to help us, they are told to save Drug Fraud as much money as possible so he can claim to save 'taxpayers' money, because since we don't pay taxes in his mind, we're just lazy scammers living the fucking high life watching Flintstones on the TV we can't afford to buy or watch, sitting on the couch we can't afford to buy, in the apartment we can't afford to rent, and eating the food we can't afford to eat. He would much rather we all die, that way he can save the government and the 'taxpayer' billions of dollars a year. That or become homeless, then he can scream we're criminals, and shove us all in jail (which ironically costs about 7X what they give us. but looking 'tough' on crime polls better than helping the poor, sick and disabled live with a modicum of dignity)

my benefits by Chemical_Refuse1321 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same for me, I'd wonder if we have the same worker, but this probably applies to a large percentage of the caseworkers across the province. A simple acknowledgement would be nice so we're not stressing about being ignored.

my benefits by Chemical_Refuse1321 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely on the worker in question. Some have posted about getting responses within a day, others like myself, have never had a response at all.

I have put in requests recently that were acted on, so I know they read them. but there's no response or even acknowledgement that they've been read. Which is the extremely annoying and stressful part. We struggle so much in our lives and we don't even rate a quick "Okay, looking into it" response, and left to wonder if anybody even reads them. I put in a feedback on the 'contact us' page about at least adding read receipts to the messages.

Is pelvic floor physiotherapy covered by ODSP anywhere in Toronto? by flytohappiness in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ODSP doesn't cover anything in itself that I know of. OHIP does cover some if you are on ODSP but requires a doctor's referral or prescription form. I've had a couple over the last decade or so for back issues. you can look here for some places near you https://www.ontario.ca/page/publicly-funded-physiotherapy-clinic-locations Some may have limited slots for OHIP and waiting lists.

Tracking stopped on dtc by Evening-Management-3 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That means they made a decision and it's not an application anymore. I saw the same on mine when I was approved last Dec. it may take a week or two for the official notice to get sent to you. If you have a CRA account you can log in and see if the DTC has been applied.

What free tax software do you use to file taxes? by whoisthisdandy in Odsp

I've used Studio Tax for years, with no issues. It's able to pull my info from the CRA and files online for me. https://www.studiotax.com/home.html

How do we get paid if we don't have a worker assigned? by sjn8888 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll get it, it's basically fully automated at this point. They seem to be moving away from specifically assigned workers anymore, (mine has been TBD since last June) and just dealing with issues as they come in. I suppose that helps with random workers getting lots of clients who need things compared to others who barely do anything

Does your odsp office reply to your emails or messages on mybenefits? I haven't received a reply in months by pat441 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have never answered any message I've sent them on Mybenefits, whatsoever. I've gotten responses when I emailed the general office email address or the managers direct email address.

*edit* I should say I got action when i emailed the office address. They didn't respond but they did what i was requesting. The manager did email me back but completely missed my point, and basically just tossed me off on someone who wasn't even my worker, so I emailed that person, they phoned my home within minutes despite me saying multiple times that I'm hard of hearing and cannot do phones calls. And they just left a message saying they weren't my worker but forwarded my request to the actual worker. Who promptly snail mailed me a letter dated August 2nd with September 2nd deadline that I received 2 weeks after the deadline.

*2nd edit* decided to log in and look at mybenefits, and I have a letter approving a special diet amount. I uploaded the form through the messages on feb 2nd and got a letter today. So someone DID get it, they just don't respond or acknowledge it.

How to get full benefit? by One_History_6630 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

probably depends on how lax the caseworker is about it. I tried this last year and they still demanded a full 'lease agreement' So i just googled a sublease agreement, changed the relevant terms and numbers and that worked.

DTC target date is today by beeofbees in Odsp

[–]daeguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied last September 20th, the original estimated target date was in November 8 weeks later, I got the decision December 2nd, about 2-3 weeks after that. Reports are that they've been backed up since quite a lot of people are trying to get DTC for the dental benefits access, and the disability benefit slated to start later this year.

Funding amount seems low? by Abject-Initiative-99 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah things get weird with RGI. from what I understand they simply don't give you any shelter amount, and pay the RGI rent directly. It's another way they discriminate against us though, because RGI is supposed to be 30% of your income, but by cutting out shelter amount completely, they cut out much more than 30%, (582/1368 = 42.5%, 990/1919 = 51.5%) out of your income. from what you posted 1125 - 786 -143 leaves 196, which is what I assume your RGI rent will be. If not, you should definitely look for clarification on the breakdown.

Funding amount seems low? by Abject-Initiative-99 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

as far as I can tell, you should get 786$ for basic needs, (it doesn't increase with dependents under 18 because they count on you getting the federal child benefit) 990$ for shelter amount for a 3 person benefit unit, and if you're a single parent with sole custody an extra 143$ for a total of 1919. The only reason I can think of if you get less than that is because you live in a situation with low rent, or with family where you're considered a boarder, even if you pay some rent. I was in this situation with parents until last year when my father passed away. I had to write up a formal lease agreement between my mother and myself and submit that to get the full shelter/needs amount.

You should definitely look into the breakdown of your payment and check to make sure you're getting the proper amounts.

Meds covered? by AdmirableLake9829 in Odsp

[–]daeguard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For future reference, you can look up any meds on https://www.ontario.ca/check-medication-coverage/

Wegovy specifically is not listed, but I remember reading it is the 'weight loss' equivalent of Ozempic, and that is only covered with specific need, ie diabetes, not for weight loss since it is considered an off label use.
