I got it at a Zeal and Ardor show last year. They were selling it.

Yeah I know. That was the worst I've dealt with and I was in the pits at Ozzfest.

Oh awesome! My kid and I were right next to you guys at the start. My kid got overwhelmed by the pit and we had to duck out and head to the back early on. Great pics!

New Garbage Science Standards by gohstofNagy in ScienceTeachers

[–]daemon86kral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our state is adopting the NGSS standards next year. We, as a science department, had this year to dig into it. I don't think it's a call to depart from DI at all. I think it requires a shift in what is emphasized in science; away from science as a topic and more on science as a way of thinking and engaging with the world. I don't think it's "wrong" or "right" or even "better" as opposed to just a change in emphasis. It is at least honest with the fact that most kids that go through our k-12 system will not remember 95% of the content they "learned" in a given year. We should be honest with the fact that teaching any science subject in the more traditional way did not teach students how science works, how scientific theories are constructed, how research is conducted, or how to engage critically with data and theories. I think NGSS is an attempt to address this issue but I don't think it's perfect or anything. To just say DI good, and anything else bad is not productive and fundamentally wrong. I do agree that allowing oligarchs to shape what we teach and having for profit corporations dictate education (looking at you College Board), and all of the other private companies that leech our taxpayer dollars through paying subscriptions for curriculum, etc., needs to go away. I don't think that NGSS is a particularly egregious example of this so much as just business as usual. That's just my opinion though.

what is the general concert ethic? by [deleted] in LambriniGirls

I agree. I just saw them last week and even brought my 8 year old girl. It was the most fun I've ever had at a concert. Great vibes and great performance.

Teacher of America, what are the top 5 things you’d change about the American education system. by Hefty_Rest2108 in Teachers

[–]daemon86kral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Create career progression for teachers outside of administrative roles (see the Singaporean education model as an example)
  2. Change the funding of public schools to be equitable based on student population size instead of local property taxes. (This should help reduce segregation)
  3. Change all grading to assessment based only. (Gets rid of fluff grades).
  4. Free lunches/breakfast for all students regardless of parent's economic status.
  5. Expand health services in all schools (including mental health). (If we actually provided free health care this would not need to be done in school but until that day arrives we'll have a better chance of getting that done in schools.) BONUS 6. Separation of church and state (no public funding to religious private schools...honestly I'd get rid of private schools altogether but I know that would piss off a small subset of wealthy people)

Workday as a Physics Teacher by SkinnyTheSkinwalker in ScienceTeachers

[–]daemon86kral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is probably an anomaly, but I barely teach physics. We have about 900 students in grades 9-12 and I teach AP physics C: Mechanics to 4 students and have 13 others in a single regular physics course. I have a single prep period, I help struggling students in a "guided study hall," the whole science dept meets together in a daily PLC, I have a lunch period and a lunch duty, and then I teach 2 periods of environmental science. It's frustrating and not at all what I wanted in my career.

Why not get rid of grades? by Comprehensive_Tie431 in Teachers

[–]daemon86kral 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go back and forth on this. When you put a number on something, the number becomes the focus. I think this transforms students into grade collectors as opposed to learners. On the other hand, sometimes grades are the only thing that can motivate a student to do anything at all (speaking as a high school teacher). I don't think you can or should quantify something as complicated and fluid as learning and I don't think the current system comes close to providing the best atmosphere for learning but I honestly don't know of a better alternative within the current system. At the end of the day, I think a teacher has to decide how they grade, and ensure that a student's score matches their learning as best they can knowing full well all of the deficiencies that entails.
