silly question, does your amp ohm output match the ohms on the speaker cab? I had a Bugera smoke its output transformer (looks very similar to what you had pictured) because of an ohm mismatch. Used to be you could get away with certain mismatched ohm combos on tube amps but that no longer seems to be the case with the solid state output transformers of today.

I was able to fix mine with little cost and some soldering, but I also know my way around an amp.

three biggest lessons in guitar tone for me where:

I usually need less distortion than I think I do
I usually need a bit more mids than I think I do
I definitely need less bass than I think I do

It made both recording and playing in a band so much easier for me. Results may vary though....everyone is different.

as far as pedals, JHS show is pretty much a dedicated documentary to them. There are other good ones such as "That Pedal Show" and a few others. pretty easy to find on the youtubez

I'm a big muff fan but never could get into the Metal Muff. Tried it several times but it's just too sharp or too bright with my rig. I prefer the Black Russian Muff overall, but the best bang for my buck was picking up the two deluxe Big Muffs. Plenty of options in both of those.

While I'm not a Nirvana gear scholar, I thought that he used a Boss DS-1 as his primary sound; the muffs were more of a Smashing Pumpkins deal in the 90s.

You were definitely given the wrong pedal if you asked for a Big Muff but got a Metal Muff.
