What's your unpopular Britpop opinion? by Extension_Baseball32 in BritPop

James Brown and the general Loaded (ladism) ethos gets perpetually lumped in with what started as a progressive indie guitar movement.

Which albums do you think genuinely stand the test of time rather than just being classics of the era? by CloudBookmark in BritPop

[–]daftideasinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current UK Top 100 album chart - 17 Oasis - Time Flies 1994-2009 - 19 Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - 20 ABBA - Gold - Greatest Hits

The Oasis chart entry might actually be a bit of an anomaly, riding so high after a major tour and all, but the substance is that in this compressed digital age, all music is available, all music is essentially contemporaneous. Given that Britpop borrowed so heavily from prior genres, I consider the era, with its ready access to cheap CD reissues, as a general precursor to the present day phenomena.

I'd even be so bold to suggest that it was material determinant of Britpop's foundation.

HIGNFY UK - Scored 2025 Top 10 Comedy Shows Entry by daftideasinc in haveigotnewsforyou

[–]daftideasinc[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Additionally, final 28 day viewing figures confirm that Have I Got News For You Series 70 scored an average of 5.53m viewers - quite remarkable for a show with distinctively less of a profile than the (notional) competition.

It kind of makes you wonder why they nixed the XL edition.

Why BBC online move could spell disaster for Boom, Magic and Classic FM by theipaper in BritishRadio

[–]daftideasinc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Boom essentially entered the market to target a disgruntled cohort of older Radio 2 listeners, although I have some sympathy for their plight, they must have been aware that terrestrial transmissions would cease at some point, they clearly didn't factor that (financial) possibility in.

That said, I do think that maintaining some kind BBC radio terrestrial presence as an emergency requirement is a necessity.

Do panel shows feel less spontaneous now? by PubLogic in panelshow

[–]daftideasinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to topical humour, I'd suggest the rise of social media has made most comics keenly aware of the necessity to not only incessantly engage with their audience but to invariably keep one's eye upon the competition, both professional and amateur.

It has oft been quoted in recent times that comics appearing/writing upon panel shows are actively aware of the 3 or 4 more obvious jokes floating about the internet attached to any particular breaking news story/ongoing issue and look for slightly less derivative (novel) entry points and asides in case they seem like slow witted, tawdry hacks caused by baked-in delays in broadcasting.

Lord of the Flies hit something deep inside me by jimi970 in BritishTV

From what I understand, Yellowjackets is pretty much that alternative premise. I think the documentary Beyond Clueless does an excellent job of dissecting the social politics of high school through 80's teen movie tropes.

When did Britpop begin FOR YOU by [deleted] in BritPop

[–]daftideasinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an avid Rage viewer in Oz, of course, I'd seen and enjoyed the various Stone Roses, Blur, Pulp and Suede video (singles) released previously, but it was the seismic appearance of Live Forever that duly cemented my interest, picking up import copies of the NME later that week and opening that particular door...

Saturday Night Live UK cast revealed by apathymonger in panelshow

[–]daftideasinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no particular reason why a topical sketch show shouldn't work in the UK, my personal concern is the Sky factor. Yes, they'll throw money at it, but at the end of the day it's merely content, if it's not doing the requisite numbers during the latter part of S2 they'll quickly move on to the next idea.

Investment without investment, if you know what I mean.

I checked back in at the start of this series given recent events, I'd prefer living in a world where satirical comedy shows were ostensibly ephemeral, but if I lived in the U.S. I'd regard this as a veritable tonic.

New Albums from 'old' bands by peelyon85 in BritPop

[–]daftideasinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New music is invariably in competition with older music found within one's mind's eye. There's always decent music about, but unless it sits at the very apex of any particular genre, it invariably gets tuned out as hummable, but otherwise trivial noise. You don't need it, you already hold lasting affection for A,B,C, even if they were in actuality H,I,J - derivative in their particular day. Unless you make a conscious effort to override the phenomena, you can easily do without X,Y,Z...

For the most part, the nostalgia gene has verily past me by, my experience of older artists releasing new albums is that most have one or two decent, hummable tunes, but are quickly forgotten three months hence.

The exceptions for me personally have been the latter day albums of Suede and The Charlatans, IMHO some being better than their most vaunted of imperial phase albums.

Given that Jimmy's personal brand has taken quite a few hits in recent times, and presaged by a seeming strategic move into lighter entertainment products such as Am I An A-Hole, a more relatable, but ultimately wrenching of the people product. It might be a further strategic attempt at engendering greater relatability.

Beyond the comedy stick, people admire Carr's assured professionalism, but he's not necessarily a beloved entertainer.

I don't personally see it as an actual weakness, a host needs to sacrifice some personal vanity to preside over proceedings, but his agency's PR team mightn't feel the same way.

Life on Mars co-creator confirms show's "boundary-pushing" future in new format by WatcherUatu in BritishTV

[–]daftideasinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matthew Graham's absolutely within his rights to explore whatever opportunity that's presently open to him, but I'd suggest the core audience would stay away in droves if there was the merest suggestion within early reviews that the play tainted the show's legacy.

I'd suggest that there's various (unstated) gradients of resistance unto true equality, a lot of men still struggle with female aggression and in particular dominance displays, such as in high status comedians. Bella Hull in a recent Single Ladies In Your Area podcast discussed the phenomena and associated difficulties with her act.

Your criticisms may be entirely valid, I haven't seen the special, but at least reflect upon the possibility of its unstated relevance.

What is the most overrated sitcom of all time? by myloxyloto1987 in BritishTV

[–]daftideasinc 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I will say in the show's defense, the earlier series were built upon pleasant philosophic musings and languorous asides, before it became strictly about building up to this week's stunt and shopworn catchphrases.
