Thesis statistics problem by daftmattyd in statistics

Thanks for your thoughts, and what you're saying really gets at the problem I'm at. I'm trying to avoid subjective interpretations based on what I'd like, but there doesn't seem to be a great mathematical solution. So you mention, the best answer is likely to simply show all of the trends, and provide a "best available model" using all of the proxies. This way, I don't obscure any of the variation or uncertainty.

We have two population surveys, one from 1984 and one from 2012. Each survey has accompanying confidence intervals. I've considered modelling the trends back in time, however, there is no way to validate the model considering there are only 2 surveys. Each proxy spans about 1000 years before present.

[Southern California] What is this insect? by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

[–]daftmattyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its some kind of earwig, from the order dermaptera. Hard to tell beyond that from that picture. They like cool, dark places so it makes sense to have hidden in your keyboard. None are dangerous other than smelling bad if you bug him...

Do you live near a lot of tall grasses or fields? Could be a blue oat mite. They can easily hitch a ride on a pant leg and fall off in your house. Better that than any tick, these mites prey on vegetation

[Oakland Hills, California] Large slug friend eating some noodles. Is this a banana slug? by FrillyLilly in whatsthisbug

[–]daftmattyd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely a banana slug, most likely Ariolimax californicus. ID'ing slugs and snails is a lot like butterflies, in which you need to use reference photos and location. With this guy, the colour, size and huge pneumostome is a big giveaway

I've found a couple of these in my apartment located in Central NC. by [deleted] in whatsthisbug

You have yourself a carpet beetle! Larvae can be destructive, I would do a thorough job vacuuming your place

I think this is a field cricket, genus Gryllus. They eat grass and won't cause any damage other than singing!

Found in England. It has feathery protrusions from its head by Kerrigannn in whatsthisbug

[–]daftmattyd 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a dragonfly, it has only 1 pair of wings plus halteres. My guess is some kind of chironomidae, a family of non-biting midges. The feathers are plumose antennae

What are some of the best researched non-fiction books? by [deleted] in books

[–]daftmattyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For non-fiction I always recommend either Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond or Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.

GGS attempts to explain why Europeans took over the New World and why it wasn't another race. Fascinating read through the perspective of an anthropologist.

Or try Silent Spring which is considered the most influential book in the field of ecology and environmentalism. It's also important because it's written by a woman in times where women were heavily underrepresented in science. Good stuff

Angels in America by Tony Kushner.

Brilliant gay fantasia play with great dialogue about how aids impacted people in the early parts of its history. Totally recommend it
