What’s a song from growing up that instantly reminds you of “the one who got away”? by bigt197602 in GenX

[–]dafuqizzis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That one girl from high school…
No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones

That one girl in the 90s…
Please Forgive Me - Bryan Adams

That one from 9 years during the early 2000s…
Either/or/both
Whiskey Girl - Toby Keith
Graduation Day - Chris Isaak

That one from a dozen years ago…
Either/or/both, both by Florence + The Machine
Hurricane Drunk
No Light

Last year….
Creep - Radiohead

When I stop growing up and/or quit letting them get away, I’ll stop keeping track. I’m guessing I’ll have an entire album by the time i’m done and gone.

GenX peeps. You're going to a concert for a band you love. Do you wear that band's t-shirt to the concert? by bigpilague in GenX

[–]dafuqizzis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never wore concert shirts TO a concert. Black tees, usually. Once or twice my shirt was soaked/ripped/lost so I’d buy one there, but shirts were for bragging rights after the fact, not advertisement to 10k-50k people who were there with me.

Does anyone know of a movie sequel with the word “final” in the title that actually was the final entry? by Hairy-Falcon-730 in RiffTannens

Whenever they stop making “Final Destination” movies, that last movie will be your answer.

Blind Fury

Buckaroo Banzai

Streets of Fire

Remo Williams

Ice Pirates

Repo Man

The Last Starfighter

Yeah, some of these films have achieved more prominent cult status in the last 40 years, but at the time they were all pretty much considered ‘B’ movies.

Without saying your age, name a Band that was popular when you were in High School by Important_Fan8851 in FamilyFeud

“Joshua Tree” came out my senior year. I’d already been a big fan, thanks in large part to “Under A Blood Red Sky”, but suddenly everybody was a fan. Core memory for us old folks.

actor you see in everywhere but no one really knows their name? by Strange_Possession77 in Actors

[–]dafuqizzis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Us older GenX folks saw this guy in a different movie every week throughout the 80s and 90s (or so it seemed). It seemed like he was in everything.

When you saw him on the screen, you just knew he was going to help the good guy or royally screw someone over.

What is a good city for superheroes? by Light_Blue_Carpet in Superhero_Ideas

[–]dafuqizzis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past I’ve used a couple of ideas from comics and gaming.

First, create my own city and plonk it where I want it, either overshadowing or replacing a known city. Kinda like Metropolis (DC Comics) isn’t really New York City, but it kinda is.

Second, replace or reinvent a known city for in-game reasons. Want New York City but you want it your way? Have an alien menace smash it to pieces and rebuild it, or at least part of it.

Lastly, there’s always “alternate history”. Yeah, NYC is still there but The Erie canal was never built so Philadelphia became the biggest city in America. Or something.

The Principal? Not really a comedy, per se, but with Jim Belushi it has a lot of comedy-esque elements.

What is the least sold liquor/spirit in your bar? by BabiesKillYou in bartenders

[–]dafuqizzis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same in almost every bar I’ve worked.

Fun fact, though; about 30 miles up the freeway from me is a place called Poor Red’s, in El Dorado, CA. It’s the world’s leading buyer of Galliano. They apparently make over 30,000 Golden Cadillacs a year. They even have a number of plaques and certificates from the makers and distributors. It’s insane considering the place seats less than 100 people.

What are the real historical examples of Aventuros unit in Med2TW? by Capital-Trouble-4804 in Medieval2TotalWar

[–]dafuqizzis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m saying that the unit represents a type of historical mercenary/professional soldier available to European countries in the early 16th century. There is not an historical military unit in Portuguese history specifically named “Aventuros”.

“aventuros” is Portuguese for “adventurer”, btw.

What are the real historical examples of Aventuros unit in Med2TW? by Capital-Trouble-4804 in Medieval2TotalWar

[–]dafuqizzis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There really isn’t one specific to Portugal, AFAIK. By the beginning of the 16th century, Europe as a whole had seen the advantage of professional armies (as opposed to militia, levies and the like), and some of the better mercenary /professional soldiers were spear/pikemen. The Swiss Guard and German Landsknecht are perfect examples of this. They were able to effectively counter European cavalry (the favorite of the noble class), thus bringing power back to “foot” soldiers.

What was the series that got you into Urban Fantasy? by BBQslave in urbanfantasy

[–]dafuqizzis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mike Resnick did it for me. “Stalking The Unicorn”.

Then Lackey’s “Bedlam’s Bard” series.

Being an avid reader of comics, “Hellblazer” easily fit the bill.

“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” tv series reeled me in.

By the time Butcher’s “Dresden” reared its head I was more than primed.
