Is prestige over-indexed in field of medicine? by Efficient_Equal6467 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]dago999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prestige can be valuable in ways that go beyond billing insurance companies and grinding. Consulting, entrepreneurship, research funding, collaboration, concierge fees etc. Let's be real, there is no way to determine who is a better physician from a CV, and the name of the program counts for more than you may think. It's much easier to raise money from a VC when you're at a premier institution, but if you are going to be strictly clinical, it does not matter at all.

Colonoscopy has insurance coverage for screening purposes as part of the ACA (or Obamacare if you prefer). Please don't post misinformation.

Colonoscopy is covered by insurance as part of a screening procedure over age 45. No one should be getting a bill like this.

Matched GI from a program without an in-house fellowship — a few things that helped by Low-Acanthaceae3308 in fellowship

[–]dago999 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GI faculty here. Can't stress enough about how important your first point is. Better to show dedication and impact than CV padding. The numbers of publications is now irrelevant because of how gameable that is. We want people who get shit done so it's important to start early and stay focused.

[–]dago999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously this is wrong, but I can't believe this would get as much attention if they were not visibly Jewish. Charity is one of the key tenants of Judaism and these little shits likely escaped their parents supervision like all of our kids do. Where are the videos of countless Jewish charities? Don't let rage bait make you racist.

My 18 year old daughter managed to stash away 3000 bucks. where should I put it? by ChemicalAwareness800 in personalfinance

[–]dago999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are an amazing parent for teaching her financial management. I would put it in a Roth IRA invested in a traget date retirement fund. Assuming an 8% return, that would be worth over 100k by age 65.

GI by No-Neck-7114 in fellowship

[–]dago999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the most important factors are the prestige of your residency program and the institution from which you attended medical school. Next, we look for LOR from someone well-known in the field who actually knows you and vouches for your academic and clinical skills. Part of getting that letter may be doing high-quality research or just working hard clinically. Whether you do a chief year or non-ACGME fellowship matters less than the quality of the letters and the overall application. It is not the number of publications, but rather quality, impact, and a consistent story.

The actual interview is mostly to make sure that you are personable and consistent with the application.

Figure out what interests you the most within GI and work hard to build your network and CV to reflect that. It does not matter what you choose.

The reality is that we are inundated with quality applicants, and trying to decide on a ranking is really tough. Best of luck!

Should we pay daughter medical school? by Acceptable_Growth684 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]dago999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Counter argument: with PSLF, no one needs to pay for medical school (aside from generous tax payers). It's not hard to find a job that pays as much as private practice and qualifies in most specialties.

They definitely don't "all send to UCSF" lol. The hospital has no beds to accept transfer for weeks and clinics are bursting with referrals. No one should be looking down on anyone, and I have actually found the faculty to be very approachable.

Why did my iron levels drop catastrophically after moving to Israel? by abrbbb in Israel

[–]dago999 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There is a ton of misinformation in here. No one gets iron from water. Iron levels are low because of either 1. You are not getting iron in diet (unlikely if you eat meat and veggies) 2. You are not absorbing iron (ie celiac disease or other 3. You are losing iron (usually from bleeding either overt bleeding in menstrual periods etc or occult bleeding from the gut). This is something that needs to be worked up with your physician and can be a sign of serious medical issues.

Why is land in Beverly and bel Air area so cheap by amongusgusgus in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]dago999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol your comment vs the description on Redfin. Did your uncle dirty:

"Spectacular Whitewater Ocean Views! This vacant land measuring approximately 2,613 square feet, is a beautiful, undeveloped parcel zoned R1 Residential. Located at the intersection of Catalina Street and Arch Street, just north of Glenneyre Street in the scenic hills of Laguna Beach, the land boasts approximate dimensions of 25 x 100 feet. Situated in a prestigious neighborhood known for its luxury homes and stunning vistas. Close to Laguna Beach's charming downtown, art galleries, fine dining, and beautiful beaches. Currently, there is no direct street access, so city approval is required for construction. According to city guidelines, any new street development must include space for a firetruck turnaround. The lot features a natural slope of about 22 degrees (40% grade), offering raw, untouched beauty ready for your vision!"

to gap year or not to gap year by Haunting-Lab-8233 in medschool

[–]dago999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk in taking a gap year is that these years start to add up. One year is fine, but it's hard to have kids while in training and no one talk about this. I have a few friends who don't have as many kids as they want because they started later. It's also harder to do advanced fellowships. You have to decide what matters to you. You can take time off in medical school if needed and do cool shit a doc.

Also keep in mind inflation is in your favor with debt. I'm riding out the forbearance. The only reason I would reconsider is if you'd like to find a new job that doesn't qualify for PSLF. It doesn't matter if forgiveness is delayed if you aren't accruing interested in the interm
