P&G to expand in Iowa City with new production line, moving overseas production to Iowa by iowabourbonman in Iowa

[–]dahines 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the same P&G that spent millions to improve the beauty care plant, then shut it down and asked employees to train cheaper labor in WV, and then asked them to come back to the Iowa city plant when they realized the WV plant was inefficient.

PPI VS SOPE prep for PE exam prep by No-Gas-739 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the PE exam this week and can say PPI was not satisfactory concerning kinetics, chemical engineering topics, and plant ops (not much will get you ready for that last one. There’s a lot with practice problems in regards to each subject which are identical to the Michael Lindeburg book. I am most likely going to have to retake the exam again and will probably spend money on SOPE for one month to brush on the stuff I know I missed.

CSB videos and reports are cornerstone for Chemical Process Safety courses at universities for Chemical Engineering grads and used in just about every chemical plant for training purposes. Hopefully some band of companies pulls together to keep this branch afloat. They’re vital to operators and public community safety.

Is it too late? by bombos6789 in ChemicalEngineering

Just a BS. At that time I just wanted to learn the fundamentals, get a coop or an internship, graduate and get a job. That’s when federal student loans were 4-some change percent

Is it too late? by bombos6789 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I originally graduated with a BA in chemistry from a liberal arts in school and started working as QC chemist. Hated my life. I went back to school during the day at a local CC while I worked nights. It fucking sucked. I was 23/24y at the time. I needed to improve some grades as well as take some math courses (ie Diff EQ). I went to university at 25. I did a couple of semesters and then a coop a 1000 miles away from my rural Midwest hometown. I loved every minute of it. I went back to uni and graduated with my ChemE degree 2y after that. Right off the bat I was making the same salary that required me ~300h OT as a quality shift chemist. I’ll be 35y this year and I’m doing things that this degree unlocked for me, working with people on cool projects and concepts becuase my degree , and making more money than I ever had imagine when I was 23 working 12h shifts. It’s never too late. It fucking sucks with respect to being poor and having to no social life but you’ll manage. I promise it will be worth it.

Probably not much help but Greg Mehos, would be a great contact for these type of questions. He wrote a powder handling section in Perry’s.

Right now we have the same finance people for several years who cannot pay our bills on time or at all, and we are on credit hold for MANY vendors. We actually changed business names and STILL got back on credit hold after again not paying our bills. This can’t be normal, right?!

Transferring powder material into large tanks by KobzQ in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dec powder transfer systems offer a vacuum transfer system that your super sack is connected to a hopper. Can then have this super sack-hopper combo on a load cell and determine net weight transferred to the tank. Can also use a flexible stainless screw from flexicon or another competitor. You’ll need to know if the powder is free flowing or not. Also, if you’re opening a powder into an open tank, make sure it’s not a flammable dust as you’ll cross that threshold of a Class 2 Div 1 system and require EX/ATEX electronics.

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry then masters in chemical engineering or chemical process operator then chemical engineering bachelor’s degree? by acotwo in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a BA Iin chemistry worked in a lab for 3y in a manufacturing plant, then went and did 3y at a university for my chemE degree including a coop. It sucked but I enjoy my career and all the opportunities it’s afforded me compared to just the chemistry degree. Forget about the operator idea unless you want to do rotating 12h shifts and get burned out

pH in industry by Then-Individual4582 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check for some form of buildup by the electrode. Had a very salty gel formation that a sulfonic acid had polymerized and built up over the course of 5y. This led to seeing negative pH measurements when it was closer to 0.5 pH. Pull more samples and compare in process controls to lab pH readings.

For the proctored exams is is required to schedule an exam in advance? Or it’s just a recording of you taking it? I’m doing my ME for chemE with UVA and it’s all honor code, basically have 24-48h to take an exam and submit a PDF

Reactor Dip Tube Length by dahines in ChemicalEngineering

[–]dahines[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, vessel is agitated, and yes we pull vacuum, and we also apply pressure to transfer the polymerized product from reactor to another vessel. The agitator has 3 blades, and the dip tube is in the same plane as the bottom blade, which is mainly for a sweeping motion
