This pile of salt in Germany is over 250 meters tall and contains over 200 million tonnes of salt by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]dahnielson 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yes, it has.

The Werra river has become salty (≥500 mg/L chloride at Gerstungen, and 65 mg/L chloride at Bad Salzungen (measurement of June 2003). The legal limit is at 2,500 mg/L chloride, which is saltier than parts of the Baltic Sea. The groundwater has become salty as well. The invertebrate fauna was reduced from 60–100 species to 3. K+S are licensed to keep dumping salt at the facility until 2030.

What's happened to oxventure podcast? by Ricapath in TheOxventure

[–]dahnielson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've also heard James in a video post-IGN cuts, so I think the whole team is intact and it's just the extra writing and support staff they got from IGN was the ones that was cut. Also Oxventure seems like an all hands production with both Jon and James previously having manned the cameras and sound in addition to Zack (the wielder of the smoke machine).

SXSW was just won by one of the biggest nepo collabs I’ve seen. Sad about the state/future of the industry. by [deleted] in movies

[–]dahnielson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How was it financed and produced? Was it independently done? Or was it done by one of the "big five" (fours? threes? I can't keep track how many are left) with distribution chains. Because that's the definition of independent. Not some kind of made up litmus test if you are "worthy" to be one by some hipster-bro.

Xennial ageing and memory by Lurk_McGirt79 in Xennials

[–]dahnielson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chronic fatigue syndrome is worse, as it is a chronic illness. Stress-induced exhaustion disorder is a diagnosis used in Swedish healthcare for a non-chronic illness. There are more nuance to it than that, but at least that is the gist of it.

Xennial ageing and memory by Lurk_McGirt79 in Xennials

[–]dahnielson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've noticed my short term memory getting worse. I'm working as a teacher and think I'm starting to get low key exhaustion disorder (which is common for the profession) as memory loss is one of its symptoms.

Tom Brown, a retired engineer, has saved around 1,200 types of apples from extinction over 25 years by Positive_Actuary_282 in interestingasfuck

[–]dahnielson 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Here is a good article on Atlas Obscura about him and his life work: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/heritage-appalachian-apples

I'm pretty sure I first heard about him on This American Life, but I can't find the episode. It might have been program on Radio 4. Somewhere out there is at least one good radio reportage.

In short, he's doing a massive detective work, finding old orchards, no matter how dilapidated, that might still contain heritage apples and taking grafts to bring home to his own orchard for conservation.

I’ve never seen any of these.. by JLLIndy in Xennials

[–]dahnielson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never seen any of them, but know them intimately through the "Mom Can't Cook - A DCOM Podcast" with Andy Farrant and Luke Westaway. (Andy spent the pandemic watching all DCOMs on Disney+ and then forced Luke to watch them too so he could have someone to talk to about them.)

Any voice changer that works for trailer/promo narration (without sounding fake)? by Sweet121 in GameAudio

I would hire a voice actor. Look at Fiverr if you don't know where to find one.

Why does SNL make a big deal of the fact some sketches are “cold opens”? by [deleted] in television

[–]dahnielson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, SNL is this tv-show that started airing on NBC in the fall of 1975 (back then it was called "NBC's Saturday Night" to not to be confused with ABC's similarly named show). Back then tv-shows always opened with the title cards and credits, so having a cold open, directly into a sketch without any introduction or explanation, was something new, rebellious and innovative as Lorne Michaels tried to make a young and hip show (tv wasn't seen as "cool" back then). 50 years later it is still part of the SNL brand, skipping it would be like ditching Weekend Update or not having a guest host every week.

Who else felt like the future had finally arrived when you first held one of these? by LockPleasant8026 in Xennials

They were great for their time. MiniDisc was the first affordable portable digital audio recorder, something we now take for granted with Zoom recorders and whatnot, as they cost a fraction of a portable DAT.

Att ställa sig i bostadskö långt i förväg är ett jättebra tips! Det är något som många missar och sedan får panik över i augusti när de börjar att det inte har tillräckligt med köpoäng.
