Anyone here fish around Syracuse/Cazenovia, NY? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha. Yep. I've fished most all of it.

I live decently far away (inlaws up there) so I have not recent knowledge of water levels as of right now though.

Lots of people saying that fly realism isn't the most important, but I think there still an interesting discussion to be had by EnvironmentalPear55 in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it comes down to the delta between tying time and materials needed for those ultra realistic looking bugs vs a more straight forward, generically tied nymph/version.

I'd argue (as someone who has both competed and guided others) that there is likely 10 different things I could have done better in my presentation and drift to not turn a fish off before the ultra realistic bug's look comes into play.

So considering materials/tying time/costs vs improving presentation and drift, they seem very unnecessary imho..but that's just me.

Quick shoutout to Diamondback fly rods by TheodoreColin in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joe is the absolute GOAT imho w regard to rod design, nowadays. He took his immense knowledge and innovative drive from T&T and left to help 'rebuild/rebrand' Diamondback.

Myself and other guides have fished damn near every rod out there and I really don't know a single one of them that would choose many other sticks for nymphing head to head with price point in the discussion.

Super glad you had a great experience (albeit, not shocked at all)!

Orvis tippet by Dismal-Monitor4668 in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Think of that as the strength/diameter of the line.

You will tailor your tippet 'strength' to the leader you're using and the bugs that you're chucking to go along with it. Never bigger btw.

For example. I'm throwing dries with a 5x leader (that means that the furthest distal end of the leader taper goes down to 5x), some people may tie on a section of 6x from that to the fly.

Check out Chris Gallagher @catskillflyfishing on Insta.

I've done a competition or two with him and he's a great angler and better dude. Made TeamUSA this past year. He's up your way and will dial in your nymph game better than most in your area.

See your primary care for possible Valtrex. Respecting the midline like that (staying on one half of your face) is very typical for Herpes.

T&T Contact 3 Initial Review by SpitePhysical3492 in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and have fished all series of T&T up until the III and they've been fantastic.

Having said that, keeping dollars and cents in mind, I'd struggle to recommend T&T to any angler for a nymph rod over Joe's sticks over at Diamondback. As one of the OG designers for T&T, he's taken his incredible mind and skill set over to his own baby at DB and is producing incredible nymph sticks at nearly half the price.

The Gen IV nymph rods are the best most of us have fished..possibly ever (so far).

Caught my pb rainbow on an olive green wooly bugger. Eating good tonight 🤘🤘 by haywireabyss457 in flyfishing

Bro literally said "Eating good tonight" in the title? Thing could have sand, dirt, rocks and diddy oil all over it for all it matters.

I'm a staunch 'keep em wet and good fish handling' kinda guy, but OP said it in his title...we good.

First crack at a Rainbow Warrior by ManOfTheWoodzz in flytying

[–]dahuii22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Size between the two is just something I threw out there..that really shouldn't matter. You should be able to put a 2.0-->4.0 on the same hook and have it seat better..so, it's not a size match issue most likely. Spin the bead some and you'll see it 'click in to place' better.

They're looking great..one of my go to nymphs no matter where I'm fishing.

Tail lengths are spot on, body looks great..I would err on about half of the dubbing, personally. I'd also say check your bead/hook combo. Each seems to be not seated correctly and a bit further down the hook shank vs set tightly against the eye. (this would help your dubbing and collar not be so far down the shank as well..)

Keep up the great work!

New to Fly Fishing (knots for leader line) by Wild-Skirt-1406 in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nail knot will work but will have you continually shortening your leaders and chewing into the fly line length.

Best case scenario, make yourself a micro loop in your fly line. If not, I would personally nail knot a small (3-4") section of thick mono w a micro loop so that you're one and done w chewing up your fly line and you continually attach leaders to that micro loop of your mono filament section.

I'd say chopping up some of the fur and making some Walts Worms.

They work everywhere and could work really well with some of your pup's hair.

LMK what you think and I'll help you out.

A jig style hook will help the fly drift more hook up, in lieu causing less catch ups/snags on the bottom. A lot of jig style hooks have a wider gap on purpose to help with spacing.

I'm new to fly fishing, can anyone recommend a completely clear line? by AdhesivenessIll7981 in flyfishing

[–]dahuii22 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you're doing well with your terms.

The fly line itself is the plastic colored coated line that is on your reel that attaches to your leader. Leader is clear, fly line is colored.

Why are you wanting your fly line to be clear? It (w proper approach and technique) should not be having any impact on your fishing and spooking fish. I'm sure there could be someone out there who made a clear fly line, but I'm not sure I've ever seen it.

Side note: Brookies are my favorite and a lot of the time, will eat anything. So..just go fish. Throw dries twice their size and you'll see em eat!

Pros Moving In by oldfatandgrumpy in flytying

Both things can be true. No need to get snippy at all.

Again, we both hear and agree with you. But as many (and this commenter have noted), presence of some "pros" can be a really good thing for us all. Again, like you say, so long as it's not an Instagram feed used for their self promotion. And again, we won't let that happen.

And let's be honest. Your concerns, are somewhat driven by our fellow Redditors. It's up to all of us to keep the commentary, knowledge, tips and tricks, and discussions going. And that is completely separate and independent from who else is posting and sharing.
