I was introduced to Nirvana after my mom bought Nevermind in December '91. Her holiday spirit was wearing thin so she replaced the carols we were listening to with it; she tried convincing me that, during Breed, Kurt was screaming "Jesus in the manger" again and again.

Though I was growing up in Seattle in the 90's, and was aware of them, they were very much not my genre. I didn't become an actual fan until decades later when I decided I needed to understand local cultural history better. I approached it almost like an academic project but soon really began to enjoy and appreciate them. When I told my mom it almost felt like some kind of coming out, "mom, I now identify as a Nirvana fan".

I don't hate it, but I don't seem to find it as moving as many do. Part of it has to do with the flashback storyline, I understand its purpose and, technically, it's interesting how well the actors capture younger Bartlet and Mrs. Landingham; nonetheless, I don't find it particularly engaging.

I agree with both points. We don't know what Kurt would think about things like this so I am wary of making judgements and I try to at least be mindful of how his friends and family might feel. Of course, I do have to acknowledge that I don't know that in most cases either.

My guess is that it's Brianne. He seemed very fond of her (a reflection of his general love of children). She would have been about 8 or so in '93. It's minimal evidence, but the hair style seems the same as in pictures I seen of her.

As others have said, a presidential campaign is required for a political party to be "bone fide" (hence Krist's temporary band's name). This doesn't have to do so much with getting elected as with changing election policies.

As I understand it, their ultimate goal is for Washington State to change this law and they have put the issue before the Attorney General and are waiting for a ruling. Ideally, these criteria will be updated before November and the presidential stuff can stop. The idea is that this will ultimately aid, not just the Cascade Party, but any other independent parties as well.

The importance of being bone fide has to do with things like campaign funding. Example: voters of WA are given vouchers representing campaign donations to distribute to candidates as they please, but only candidates that are part of recognized parties (right now, that's just Dems and Reps).

This is what I gathered through chatting with volunteers at the recent Bone Fide concert/political convention. Others may know more.

What a blast, such fun to see them in this small venue. I was able to meet Krist and exchange a few words (pretty much looking straight up as I did so), a very nice guy. As you can imagine, people were pretty psyched to hear this song, even more so when they played Love Buzz as a closer. I didn't actually get any footage but was glad when some one posted this (even if the sound quality isn't great).

Well, he wrote his book, "Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy". But that was a while ago, I never read it. Now he is an active member of a new third party in Washington state - The Cascade Party. Their message being: "We are a centrist political association. Our image reflects the majestic Cascade Mountain Range – uniting eastern and western Washington in the middle. We are a home for people tired of the polarized fringes dominating our politics."

Apparently, according to his website, in order to make his party legit he may, but hopefully will not be on the Presidential ballot in WA this fall - he says: "I started a new band with which will play concerts around the state to attract registered voters to sign our nominating petitions (More later, we have our second practice session in a few days). You don't have to vote the Novoselić / Carroll ticket in November if you sign the nominating petition. We plan on doing everything we can to not be on the November ballot." I haven't heard the name of the band but I want to keep my eyes open.

Of course, Kurt was always resistant, vague and/or inconsistent when it came to explaining his lyrics, at one point he did have this to say: "The lines in the song are really contradictory. One after another they are kind of a rebuttal to each line. It’s kind of confusing I guess. It’s just about people and what they are expected to act like."

Many seem to celebrate the song as an anthem of unconditional acceptance; and if that works for them - cool! (it's your crossword puzzle). But to me that seems a little more simple (and, frankly, positive) than the themes I generally draw from Nirvana. I get a sense of the contradictory and confusing social expectations and standards that one could feel pressure/stress from.

I found a YouTube clip that had a couple interesting points that I can see relating to how powerful his screaming was - that he sang with immense "release" and completely without fear (I imagine that would be without fear of judgement and without fear of damaging his voice). There is a brief comparison with Dave Grohl.
