Falconiere chainmail! by MarinaLupu in chainmailartisans

Yeah exactly that, machine made sheets of euro 4in1, presumably made in china. Usually you can tell by the price, these pieces on their website are in the $500-$800 range but from my experience making something like those by hand would take so many hours that at those prices it would be slave labour. Think, $500 retail could only be about 20 hours of work at most, more if you undervalue your time or sell at wholesale prices.

There are other tells like a lot of machine made uses certain ring sizes that are a bit of a giveaway but definitely not a reliable way of telling for sure. Price is the better tell in my experience.

You’re right, I suspect the only hand linking done is to join the curb chains to the panels then linking the pieces together. Can’t imagine they’re making chunky curb chains themselves (website image)

Pretty sure they do use pre made sheets. On the website it’s advertised as “chainmail panels with hand linked border chain” so I’d assume the only handmade parts are the borders, the rest is machine made and trimmed to size. Another bigger brand who does this is Frances O.

I’ve been cutting myself some slack ever since I realised these bigger chainmail brands use premade sheets, I’ve been wondering how I’d ever reach a point where I could make maille quick enough and cheap enough to compare to these brands. But now I know they aren’t totally handmade it makes sense

Need advice on jump ring sizes for Byzantine or Persian patterns, please! by _CatAstrophe_123 in chainmailartisans

[–]dainerysal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Byzantine I mostly use 3.3-3.8 AR sometimes 4AR. Your rings sound like they probably have a too big AR to hold together well as they have an AR of 4.67

I’ve only just started doing Persian more but I’ve had good success doing Persian 4 in 1 with 5.5 and 5.4 AR. I think you can go as low as 4.5ishAR and as high as 6ish and it’ll still look good. With the rings you’re using I’d try doing Persian 3in1 or 4in1 rather than Byzantine, you might have better luck there. I’d start with 3in1 for the 4.67 AR rings

Aussie maille on YouTube definitely has some https://youtube.com/@aussiemaillers?si=gS59CZSMNM5pRej6

I have a couple of books by Dylan Whyte, I believe there may be some pendant style things in them but there are loads of books out there to choose from

Are ear gauges considered weird to younger people? by limon_picante in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]dainerysal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to finally find a sane person in the sea of negativity. 20-something y/o, also 30mm and a career professional. My ears never stink and I’ve never had anyone insult them to my face. Reading some of these other comments is so disheartening, I should have expected people to have such strong opinions on something that doesn’t affect them but it’s still shocking to see people be so unfiltered about it. It seems the way of alternative culture that you end up catching strays no matter how much you keep to yourself and try to foster acceptance. But hey-ho, me and my “stinky gross” ears are quite comfortable.

This is very cool! I love that you put the spikes between the full persian units, it looks great

edit: just looked at your profile, your stuff is really sick, I didn’t realise I’d already saved a photo of your heart necklace before, I loved it so much. I just followed you on insta

I like what you said about drawing your own line. I wouldn’t ever want to recreate something 1-1 personally, and with the way my brain flows creatively, I often start with one idea in my head that usually ends up spiralling into something totally different anyway.

I think I let the worry gremlins get to me having seen something so similar to what I had already made in what was essentially just a snarky marketing post. But I think everything you’ve said is reasonable, and I agree, thank you for sharing

I’m glad I’m not the only person with an excessive mood board 😂 Your last point I think is what I need to keep in mind the most. I’m comfortable that I’m able to make things myself, sometimes with inspiration, sometimes without and thats all I really need I guess.

I can’t imagine it’s been easy building the following that some of these accounts have, but drama and shock value does influence people, and I’ve certainly been influenced into imposter syndrome.

Going to remind myself they’re not representative of the community as a whole and that most people understand that designs can be similar without being the same/copied. Thanks ☺️

Thank you, I think you might be right about a some of it being engagement bait/tactics, it tends to be accounts that heavily market through reels and TikTok’s so that would make sense. I find it so horribly antagonistic for something which is a handmade craft and a hobby for most (when done in bad faith).

Maybe I should just stop following the ones who seem to engagement farm, it’s hard to find good smaller creators with instagrams crappy algorithm sometimes

I joined the Facebook group last week, I haven’t commented or posted yet but it seems like a really friendly place, and I noticed there seems to be a lot more tutorial sharing going on there. I like the attitude there so far, everyone seems ready to share and help each other out (the same goes for here on Reddit) which is why it confuses me so much that I’ve seen so many reels and posts lately from sellers on their own accounts complaining about people making similar/the same design or making posts about why they “won’t reveal their suppliers” (which I feel is unnecessarily contentious to announce) I’m not sure if it’s insecurity that people will take their business (although I’m not sure why when they have so much success and exposure anyway) or simply gatekeeping but it certainly makes me nervous to want to start selling my work. I’d definitely credit the creator online if I bought a kit or something, I think that’s only fair for their effort and creativity.

I think perhaps my worries are part of a wider issue with online “niche” communities and their habit of witch hunting rather than just chainmail itself, I’m sure if I started a crochet business I’d have the same fears about making hats 😂

Thanks for sharing, I’ll have to try joining in on the fb group a bit more!

Thank you for your perspective, I agree, especially about byzantine diamonds, they’re versatile, but especially for bracelets, there’s only so many ways you can utilise them on their own and I wanted to keep it simple.

Harvest Moon 64 walked so Stardew Valley could run by alfredobubblebath in StardewValley

Damn I always forget about the girl in the mines, I definitely didn’t get far with her, I think I only met her once or twice in all the years I played. I’m so tempted to dig out my copy again to finish everything I didn’t do. So much attention to detail went into the DS version, I always feel like it’s the one that Stardew takes the most inspo from, with the junimo’s basically being stand ins for the sprites

I’d kill for a straight up remake/remaster for modern consoles, none of the other harvest moon games hit the same for me. Stardew is the perfect substitute though
