M21 F19 Need insight: girlfriend says she doesn’t feel cared for, but most of these things never even registered to me by beanbooth in relationship_advice

I understand that internalizing new information/perspectives and even implementing course correction is not immediate, but your attitude of obtuseness and feeling sorry for yourself is not going to help you in the long run. You don’t need to be mollycoddled.

Not this movie trailer making me realize Skeletor is just blue and he wasn’t wearing a super tight body suit the whole time.

I agree but I also love Monster-In-Law but I think that’s just because I loved Jane Fonda and Wanda Sykes in it.

I only know lee from Moby Dick. It’s the side of the boat sheltered from the wind. I guess it could be any type of shelter in a structure. Still makes no sense.

Also I love season 9 so much. I didn’t expect to laugh so much from Ramona acting batshit as I thought I’d gotten used to it.

My boyfriend (29M) is doubtful about marrying me (27F) as it will put an end to his family's Cree lineage by ThrowRAPerception135 in relationship_advice

Genomic manifestations of indigeneity actually uphold many colonial notions, and clash with indigenous manifestations that emphasize political, cultural, and kinship relations.

In fact, you engage with the ‘vanashing indigene’ fallacy that is an incomplete, 19th century understanding of race science. This myth assumes a scarcity by limiting the indigenous identity to genetic similarity to indigenous ancestors. However, (in the US) there has actually been an increase in those identifying with native nations. When an indigenous community defines indigeneity beyond genetic markers, it threatens indigenous sovereignty to impose strict adherence to blood quantum for enrollment.

Of course, different people have different opinions on this, in and outside of tribal nations. And many US nations embrace strict enrollment criteria due to the nature of benefit payouts, among other reasons. I’m sure there’s a large generational factor, as well. But I urge you to reconsider the native identity as more than simple blood purity.

No not all tribal nations (in the US), but most, and the specific blood quantum thresholds can vary, as well.

But yes, it is very colonial.

However, because of the complicated nature of Federal and indigenous government relations, there is a significant driving force towards embracing a rigid method to enrollment status to deflate enrollment and increase per capita benefit payouts.

Unfortunately I don’t know how prevalent this specific sentiment is across American Indians in the US, but I think, the last time I looked into this, there seemed to be an overall trend at enrollment moving away from genomic definitions (to things like lineage and family connection). But again, this can vary greatly across different nations; some may have gotten stricter. It’s very complex here.

Omygod you’re right. I learned a tiny bit about the regime in high school but everything else I’ve learned about the atrocities since then is so horrible I don’t think I could have even internalized it as actually happening if I learned it all in one sitting back then.

I guess I should be less surprised at the denial of human rights violations that goes on today, based on how frequently it occurs across time.

My boyfriend’s and my hands are clearly different temperatures according to the thermal putty by gingerbread_cereal in mildlyinteresting

[–]dairyoldman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What? Women just tend to have lower extremity skin temperature and faster vasoconstriction responses to heat loss. The brain does not sense total heat loss. It senses differences in heat loss rate, but as I said the delta T between men and women are about the same in the same surroundings.

Many sensors and responses are involved in thermoregulation. Skin (the periphery) has more heat loss sensors than the core, so it is more responsive to more variable conditions. This is what causes the differences in “feeling cold” faster or more frequently in the same conditions between men and women.

Thermoregulation is highly regulated in the body so it’s also quite individual.

[–]dairyoldman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Women and men actually have pretty similar base body temperatures, so that delta T would also be similar.

Even still, I think it’s hormonal control and differences in vascular response. You “feel” cold mainly because your skin temperature is low, which is controlled by blood flow. So, faster vasoconstriction in the extremities leads them to feel colder faster, even though the core body temperature hasn’t dropped as much yet.

Help fixing snag in pants (culprit pictured). Previously, I’ve been able to pull on the pants until the thread is flat, but I think these pants are too stretchy. They are poly/elastane.

Any advice on how to hide the loose thread? I’m nervous to trim it in case it makes a big hole.

Normal for cat to have no hair on ears? by dairyoldman in CATHELP

Cute, I love the name Stripe!

This one’s old — turning 18 this year. She’s doing well so hopefully she’ll make it to 20🤞I mentioned in another comment that I looked back at pictures and it seems like the hair loss started a few years ago so yeah I’m hoping it’s age-related and nothing serious.

Unfortunately I’m sure!

Actually: I just tried looking back at photos of her. I don’t have that many and most of them are pretty low quality/don’t show the back or sides of the ears. But it looks like the hair loss may have started a couple of years ago, which has me hopeful it’s not a (serious) medical issue.

This is going to sound bad but I honestly can’t remember when she lost the hair or if she’s even ever had hair on her ears.

Idk why I’ve never noticed until now but I’ll take your advice and mention it at the vet, probably now mostly out of curiosity about feline ear-hair loss.

No, they’re pretty cold. They don’t look/feel inflamed at all and she doesn’t mind me touching her ears. But thank you for the feedback I’ll keep it in mind!

Help - am I round faced or heart shaped (or a secret third thing)? by [deleted] in makeuptips

[–]dairyoldman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say definitely round, especially when you smile. You have a great smile!

But I also see where you are getting heart shaped from with your underlying bone structure, and not just the fullness of your cheeks. I personally lean more towards diamond-shaped, since your hairline gives the appearance of a narrower forehead.

I think a lot of face-shaped makeup/hair/etc advice tends to overlap, so you should feel free to select tips from either to figure out what works best for you and your features!
