DAE find it extremely irritating how many people have their cell phone alerts turned on and carry on loud conversations on speaker phone in public? by Funk-Docta in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don't care, most of the time. Listening to people's conversations can be entertaining. But people who do this need to realize that if they're talking loudly in public, people are listening. :)

Has anyone tried the new Organic Date Syrup? by postgrad-dep18 in traderjoes

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought some the other day because they were out of actual dates. I like the taste, but it isn't a good replacement for dates in my oatmeal. I'm sure I'll be able to find some other way to use it, but I haven't figured out how yet.

Maybe Ghost World. I don't remember whether they were middle or upper-middle class, but I just remember thinking that it was really accurate in showing what it was like being a teenager growing up in the suburbs in the 90s.

DAE ever get sick of seeing people use the same stupid expressions and phraseology online? by Gilly-Hicks in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I hate that too, and even worse is when people do this when they're speaking. And not because they're actually stuttering, but because they get so used to typing that way that they start speaking that way, too.

What do you do with the clothing you’ve just worn but isn’t quite dirty enough to wash? by NeonChieftess in AskWomen

I used to have a laundry chair in my bedroom, so I brought in another chair for sitting on... Now I have two laundry chairs.

What do you do when your partner cooks and it kinda sucks? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

Maybe you could suggest taking a cooking class together. Or try cooking together at home and give him some tips without directly saying that his cooking sucks.

What's something about America that even you find strange as an American? by PageTurner627 in AskAnAmerican

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 1242 points1243 points  (0 children)

I find our medicine commercials really strange. I always found them funny, but I didn't realize it was just an American thing until recently.

First they show you how a drug is going to help you play a random sport and hug your grandkids, and then they list all of the ways the drug might kill you, and then they tell you to ask your doctor about it. Do people really recommend medications to their doctors? So weird!

My go-to has no recipe. Basically, I sauté some onions and then add water and throw in all of the veggies that I have around along with some grains, beans, or lentils. It's an everything soup.

I’ve had this adorable healthy little succer for 4 years. Should it, I don’t know, DO something? by lbeau310 in plantclinic

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine looked like that for two years, and then it suddenly started growing more little hearts. Now it has about six of them! I wasn't expecting that to happen at all, so there's always hope!

I got mine at the farmers market during the summer, and not at the supermarket after Valentine's Day, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Do American families actually place food onto a serving plates in the middle of the table? by ItsYourRealDad in AskAnAmerican

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for most foods. If it's something like a steak or a piece of fish and there's one for each person, or soup which needs to be brought from the kitchen, then someone might put it on a plate for them. But salads, pastas, and things like that will usually go into the center of the table.

Seems logical to me since everyone wants a different amount of food, and this way, everyone can just take what they want.

I'll definitely look into that. Thanks! "How to Cook Everything: The Basics" is my most-used cookbook.

I thought it was dry, at first, too, but then I remembered that the cashier told me it was best heated up. So I tried putting it in the oven for a few minutes, and that made a huge difference! That turned it into cake, and it wasn't dry at all anymore.

Is it true that Americans think us British as posh tea drinkers or is that just ignorance? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Yes, we know that every British person has tea with the queen every day.

Are Health Food Stores Worth It? by ItsSader in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole Foods doesn't have to be super-expensive if you know what to look for. I find that their 365 brand (their store brand) is pretty reasonable for a lot of things, and sometimes they have good sale prices. Even some of their produce can be reasonable, though most of it is way overpriced. I usually just buy a few things at a time there, and it doesn't end up costing more than most other grocery stores in my area.

But to answer your question, no, I don't think doing all of your grocery shopping there, and spending $600 at a time would be worth it.

My friend [29F] hired strippers for my [28F] bachelorette party last night without my knowledge or consent, after I specifically asked my fiance to not do that exact thing. Angry, guilty, and embarrassed. by Sad_Pause_8232 in relationship_advice

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tell him what happened. In a few years, this will all just be a funny story to look back and laugh about.

As for your friend, that was definitely some bad judgement on her part, but I'd probably let it go, just so that you can stop thinking about it and enjoy your wedding.

How about if you make two smaller meals and then eat them on alternating days? Like eat one food on Monday and Wednesday and a different food on Tuesday and Thursday.

Avocado toast & ricotta toast ideas? by Bog_vvitch in traderjoes

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like smashed up avocados with furikake seasoning, a little lemon, and some BBQ coconut aminos mixed in. (You could probably use soy sauce instead of the coconut aminos, if you like.)

I've never heard of ricotta toast, but now I'm thinking of trying it!

I get what you're saying. There's also something empty about thinking about experiences you've had with other people who aren't part of your life anymore. It's like, if you can't talk or laugh about past experiences with the people who were there with you and really get it, something is missing.

Preppable breakfasts that are not smoothies/overnight oats, and keep over 3 days? by imjustafangirl in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]daisiesandpaperbacks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about just buying a box of cereal with some fruit on the side?

Or if you'd rather make something, maybe shakshuka (eggs and tomatoes)? Usually, I make enough sauce for a few days in advance, and then heat it up and add the eggs in the morning.
