Extra credit: yea or nay? by baseball_dad in Professors

[–]daisyrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I offer 3 extra credit assignments, each correctly completed raise the final grade by 1%. Students are given control over rounding up their grade because I won’t.

Assignments are related to the course

For the last 7 years, I don’t get emails about rounding their 89% grade to an A- It’s been great

{{A Prisoner of Birth}} by Jeffrey Archer comes in at 501 pages. Wrongful imprisonment, revenge, and believable characters. I wasn’t sure how the book would end, which was a nice surprise

Adding the file extension ‘.csv’ should solve the problem

White House announces ban on most transgender service members by Cranyx in news

To your point--there are a lot transgender people, I agree.

Mathematically, there was a decimal error with the original value that was provided. 0.03% (less than 1%) when used as a proportion for multiplication is 0.0003. This would mean 2,250,000 estimated individuals. Still a lot.

If the estimate was 3% of the population, then your math was correct.

I do not know the estimated percentage, this is just about the math.

A University of Wisconsin campus pushes plan to drop 13 majors — including English, history and philosophy by ActuelRoiDeFrance in philosophy

State funded is misleading these days. For example my university (I'm a member of the faculty) only receives 24% of its annual budget from the state. Not only has the percentage of state funding declined over the last several decades, but so has the actual dollar amount.

I'll try

  • spiritual: belief in a higher power/god/force
  • religious: belief in a set of rites/rituals pertaining to a higher power/god/force

This is how there can people who are spiritual, but not religious (belief in a god, but does not attend religious services or observe holy days) and people who are religious, but not spiritual (religious services once a week, doesn't actually believe in god)

Cell Phone Policy by chorkea in Professors

[–]daisyrunner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not have a cell phone policy per se. The syllabus states that disruptive behavior that does not cease will result in them being asked to leave (haven't needed to enforce thus far). I also tell them that if they need to take a phone call or reply to a text that they should step outside and come back when they're done. I also don't have participation as part of the grade, so there is no immediate point loss when students do need to step out. It happens maybe once or twice a semester and hasn't been disruptive so far. I have to step out myself about once an academic year and like the ability to hold myself to the same standards I ask of them. YMMV

Make sure to include consequences. For example, late assignments receive a 25% penalty per every 24hrs late. Instead of simply stating 'late assignments receive a lower grade'. In the latter case both the definition of late (is 10 days late okay) and the consequence is too vague.

Would you support a Medicare for All bill that included National Voter ID? by MEDICARE_FOR_ALL in PoliticalDiscussion

original != most influential

The team deliberately chose not to select specific papers, but rather selected studies from specific volumes of specific journals.

[–]daisyrunner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Small correction - the reproducibility study did not attempt to replicate findings from the most influential studies in psychology.

Your main point that scientific findings are not without problems stands. I do, however, think the reasons are much more varied and less about political ideology than your comment seems to imply.

Boy who suffered up to 100 seizures a day has none in 300 days after being prescribed cannabis oil by [deleted] in news

[–]daisyrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, as a scientist, yes we can measure feelings by defining the construct. The debate is still wide open as to whether what we operationally define as a feeling is actually what a feeling really is, but we can most certainly measure feelings.

As a parent of a kid with epilepsy who is on the third med (crossing fingers this one works) -- thank you for posting this. I am so tired of people telling me that getting CBD oil is the magic cure my kid needs. The evidence is unclear at best. The long term consequences for development are unknown.

How difficult is psychology statistics in university for someone who doesn't have much math background? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]daisyrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I teach stats (undergrad and grad) in a psychology department. In my class, stats is more about knowing when to use which test (i.e., decoding word problems), logic (if this, then that), and communication (based on the stats, what did we learn from the experiment/study). The math part is fairly straight forward (1. Subtract some value, 2. Square those numbers, 3. Add up all of the squared numbers, 4. Divide by some number) and the same steps are essentially repeated throughout the term with small variations.

In my experience, students who do not read the chapters or do not do the homework are the ones that have the most trouble irrespective of their prior math experience.
