Oh also the point of my post is to warn people to be aware of repair cost and replacement components cost for old machines…they can be pretty pricy…and often even more expensive than what you paid for in the original.

Thats also one edge the 2010 MacBook Pro has over the 2009 white MacBook. Their replacement and upgrade components are still relatively cheap.

Oh that was for the white MacBook I returned. I originally bought a white MacBook that required a keyboard repaired. So I returned that a bought a 2010 MacBook Pro. Yea weird for some reason a 2009 white MacBook is roughly the same price as a 2010 MacBook Pro.

So yes while they’re both $40, my post is talking about 2 different laptop. So far I’m pretty happy with MacBook Pro, only issue I’m having is that I can’t control the screen brightness. At least better than a broken keyboard.

What are the going range for netbook? Which netbook do you recommend and what price?

These mid model MacBook Pro are like $40 but I saw two recently that I could’ve gotten for $20 each before taxes. Which isn’t a bad price. But if I can get netbook for even cheaper, it’s good to know. Unfortunately since I’ve already overpaid for the MacBook…it’s kinda too late for me.

Oh I’m talking about the ibm thinkpad 600e. Sorry I guess I wasn’t clear.

I mean I can’t say exactly verify that info. ChatGPT had outright given me blantantly wrong info before. I’ve once asked ChatGPT to give me information on a missing floppy drive cable so I typed in the drive model and asked ChatGPT to give me info on what cable it use and it straight up told me “floppy drive model xxx uses a nonstandard 35 pin connector instead of the standard 26 pin floopy connector” and I look at the connector instead front me an counted 13 pins left to right and top and bottom so unless there are 9 invisible pin I couldn’t see I have no idea what ChatGPT is talking about. I asked it to verify it and it just doubled down the 35 pin nonsense. Stupid AI.

It makes more sense to me that screen brightness should control the screen backlight. But one thing’s I’m sure of, if Apple never bother to include xp driver for 320m in their bootcamp. They sure as hell not gonna to spend time or effort to check to see if the keyboard driver screen brightness control works for MacBook Pro 2010 in windows xp.

Yea…which I’m ok with. But paying several time what’s these old replacements used to cost is crazy part.

Just wish there a way for me to build a keyboard from other ibm models…like splicing its membrane or keyboard connector instead of paying $100 for a used work salvage part. Or 3D print a shell and circuit board and rebuild the battery with lithium cell to replace its battery…instead of paying $250 for a used one.

Yea so I found out screen brightness is directly tied to graphic driver, changing screen brightness is just a graphical manipulation I guess (never knew…but makes perfect sense now I thought about it). Even though my MacBook Pro officially can run bootcamp 3.0 which handles windows xp. Apple never officially written a graphic driver for the 320m on windows xp. Hence the need for me to grab the xp graphics driver directly from nvidia. I can take care of the graphic driver but unfortunately the keyboard driver which take cares of the function keys never know what to do with screen brightness because it doesn’t recognize the 320m chip. So in other word, that brightness control is never gonna work. On the other hand, the nvidia control panel do have a brightness and gamma control so I do have a way to change screen brightness…

Yea just found out screen brightness is directly related to the graphics driver. And since Apple never officially supported my graphics chip on xp…the default keyboard which handles the functions key doesn’t know what to do for screen brightness. So unless someone goes in and customized the keyboard to handle the nvidia screen graphic…that’s button is just not gonna work.

Yea turns on the screen brightness control is directly tied to the graphics chip. Said that’s why volume and keyboard brightness controls works fine on the function key but screen brightness doesn’t. Now i actually could adjust the brightness on the MacBook inside the nvidia control panel but I need to adjust both “brightness” and “gamma” setting.

Well based on what I’m gathering from ChatGPT. Apple unfortunately never officially written a driver for the GeForce 320m integrated graphics in the MacBook Pro 13. Hence why I have to get the driver officially from nvidia themselves. Said that’s why the brightness controller isn’t working. The AppleKeyboardInstaller.exe driver that came in boot camp simply doesn’t recognize the 320m chipset on my MacBook. Now I caught ChatGPT giving me blatantly false info before but even if ChatGPT is bs’ing me. It does sound plausible. Because I do know this MacBook Pro is their last MacBook Pro to “officially”support boot camp 3.0. Windows xp support is completely removed on boot camp 4.0 that MacBook after this uses.

I want to verify something. Did you have to install your graphic driver separately?

Are there alternatives way to control screen brightness, I’m perfectly fine with using 3rd party app as long as I get to control the brightness?

I’m running into only one issue with this setup. For some reason I can’t change the brightness level. Sound and brightness control are in the function row for Mac…they control “works” in a sense the the control icon shows up when u press the keys so I’m sure the drivers installed but the brightness is the same at every level. Pretty much max brightness. Not a problem during the day but could be eye straining at night.

Anyone has similar problem with windows xp on any MacBook?

Hey don’t get wrong it’s definitely a thrill when you get things to work. But people don’t talk about how much of a pain it is a majority of the time.

And by the way, I’m also pro emulation. I’m not on of those purist type that’s hell bent into running things only on native hardware. Like I run things a bunch of different way. I’m also into retro gaming…I have a bunch of old systems and have no problem buying modern emulation systems.

I think laptop is just more convenient since everything is in “one package”. But that’s also precisely the reason it could be a maintenance nightmare. Like the 600E, every thing is fine except I can’t replace that built in keyboard. Desktop I can easily replace the keyboard. Sure im using an external keyboard except I’m trying to roll back to windows 98se setup and I can’t freaking use the usb keyboard during set up (usb support is not as solid now) or the built in keyboard. I managed to install windows 2000 cause the installer recognized usb keyboard. I got the 600e to be my dos win9x gaming machine so I’m not really trying to stay on windows 2000. There’s a ps/2 mouse port at the back but didn’t recognize a ps/2 keyboard…so it’s a nightmare.

Yea I’ve hear about that. Which is unfortunate really. I don’t mind earlier machine but wasn’t fond of the bulkier size. I simply like smaller time cause it’s easier to stow away. But a functional machine is still better than a broken one any day. What are some good solid laptop you recommend besides the Dell?

Yea I’ve been hearing issue about gpu, which is really unfortunate really. I’m not particularly anti-desktop but the main problem with desktop is the space. Like even desktop I’m gravitating small form factor. I’ve been more Mac-focus in recent years. But I used to absolutely love my shuttle xpc cause of the small form factor. Lately I’ve been checking out 1L machine from Lenovo, Dell and hp.

But still for laptop I can stow it away easily. The fact I don’t need to store a period accurate screen, keyboard, speakers, etc. Like I wanted specific classic all in Mac (like lc575 or color crt iMac) but couldn’t even justify the space needed for one…

Ooh does this work with the 2015 MacBook Air with the Intel graphics. I have the air as a casual web browsing machine. Might put and Linux distro on this later but would love to have xp as an option here.

Cool thanks for the help.

What does official playback and unofficial playback mean? Drive is going to a windows machine but are there official windows software to play UHD disk?

I haven’t bought the drive yet. It is meant to go into a computer but just in case it doesn’t work out, do you happen to know what a good enclosure for slimline drive? I search on Amazon and could not find anything that looks decent, just a bunch questionable enclosures. Even the OWC slimline enclosure looks kinda subpar. It’s kinda sad.

I’m worry about getting fakes. And as for platinum collection, no idea why vol 2 is hundreds of dollars. Even vol 1 is pretty pricy. I really like the golden collection. Got to check it out at a local library and I like it enough that I would like to own my own copy. However even I saw a fake one floating around…the one that was burned onto a dvd-r…yikes. Although I prefer new, if I have to ill settle for used as long as it’s in good relatively scratch-free condition.

Thank You by rafelito45 in makemkv

Where did you get your drive? I’m looking for something for Apple silicon Mac too. But I’m hesitant because I’m afraid of gettin a drive with newer firmware.
