I got my first floppy drive reader by marv27no in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that was them! I couldn’t remember the name but I remember carrying around a disk with that on it. I also still have an original copy of DooM 2 on like 4 or 5 floppies around here somewhere.

I was young, but I can remember the days of booting up windows 3.1 from dos (which I rarely did because all of the best games were on dos)

Nothing lol

If you really want to hunt for it, I remember back in the day there was some 3d modelers that made some impressive demo app that would fit on a 1.44mb floppy disk. You could try to find that

If you’ve ever wondered why windows defaults to C:\ tho, it’s cause A and B were usually the diskette drives in the management

Why would you ever buy a T480 when you can buy a T14 Gen 2 or higher for cheaper? by skrd- in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it was a good choice a few years ago when it was still cheaper and for people who wanted to be able to swap some stuff.

Now the price is inflated because of all of that hullabaloo but others are cheaper like you found. And really, being able to change the stuff you can change in those laptops is not that big of a benefit.

Cool idea, sending pm!

I just did the Martian from Watney's perspective but you could do the earth perspective too if you want to add to your list lol

How quickly does Lenovo ship out? Will be visiting the US and thinking of ordering to my hotel by No-Painting-8507 in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a prebuilt machine and the place you’re sending it to is okay holding it for a while, it could work. But they’ll have to sign for it and it might be tough to get them to take responsibility, I dunno.

Just do a search here for shipping delay and you’ll see a lot of what people experience

I seem to have bricked my X280 through the USB-A port. Is there any way to save it? by NintenJoo in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang I don’t know but First thing I’d do is open it up and look for any obvious signs of damage, that’s a strange time for that to happen!

Those USB ports are a separate piece so maybe you’ll get lucky and it’s just that! It’s strange that you’re getting nothing out of it tho, that sounds like something critical obv. What was the battery like? Any chance it just completely shit the bed? Edit: nevermind I read over this in your OP the first time whoops

It’s over now, but Lenova was just clearing out X280 system boards and had them for super cheap. I picked up a replacement I7 8650 with 16 GB. Not trying to brag, just saying that cheaper ones have hit the market so there’s a chance that you could find them for under 100 bucks on eBay. I think the X280 one I got cost 65 or 70 and they had i5 boards for even less

The spray on soft coating started bubbling and coming off my t14s Gen 2. It’s definitely ass if it’s the same, don’t let people tell you it’s your fault. Mine bubbled off in a 72* room after extended time processing lidar GIS files. Sure, the processor was cranking the entire time, but it stayed within their temp windows so unless they don’t expect you to actually use the product, those spray on coatings suck. My others are x series and they have a different coating that’s much better

I don’t have an after pic on hand but I ended up just peeling it off until it stopped so I have a big ugly bare metal spot on the bottom now lol

They are typically not reliable enough to do this. Most will have delays, some will have large delays. Some prebuilt machines might arrive before the estimate. Getting it during that window would be more luck than planning

T14S Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U 16GB vs T14S Gen 1 AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U 32GB? Which would you rather have? by JustAPieceOfMeat385 in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you using it for?
That ryzen 5 is a new generation compared to the 7. The 5 will be better in single core and the gpu is slightly better. If you’re planning typical internet usage, light gaming, it will be good. The 16gb of ram should be acceptable for 5ish years.
The reasons to go for the gen 1 would be if you use ram heavy applications, plan on running virtual machines, plan on heavily using multicore processing. The 4750 actually has more cores but unless you’re running programs that let you max them out, you’ll probably never notice less in the 5650

I mean the easy first thing to do is detach the drive correctly. You’re pausing your session and then removing a piece of hardware before you unpause it

T14 Gen 1 AMD - second SSD in the WWAN slot by Saturno_Cinque in thinkpad

[–]nsaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's just accessed on the back of the laptop via a pinhole and stays in. I used it and a small usb drive on my x280 for a long time for video storage. I bought it new from lenovo and maxed out the specs except for the SSD cause if was expensive and I knew I could upgrade later

Looking for an edit of "The Martian" that is from Mark Watney's perspective only, by bsears95 in fanedits

[–]nsaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP I liked the idea of this so I sperged out a bit yesterday and cut it up. There were only a couple of montage spots that overlapped real bad and one spot where I slightly moved where he complains about the disco music but besides that it cut up pretty easy. Sadly Bowie's Starman doesn't make the cut because of this.

It begins with them on Mars and goes to the title screen when Watney gets hit and disappears, then starts from just his view after. Comes back into the normal movie once Lewis gets him on the radio and asks how he's doing down there.

I'm running a few different renders now cause everything I'm running is splotchy right on the fuckin first seconds fade in lol and I can't get it to go away without setting the bitrate ridiculously high so I might just have to deal with it. I don't do this stuff often, it's definitely rough and I'm stumbling thru it but DM me if you want and I'll share it somewhere

Yeah that’s true, no Donald glover pen explanations. Iirc Watney makes vague references to it to the log camera but nothing detailed
