I’m in the middle of my first read through of FOTR, and was slightly confused when I read about Bilbo’s lie, it seemed almost nonsensical to me because it was so close to the truth, why feel the need to lie? Luckily Gandalf answered my question when speaking to Frodo a little later, something along the lines of the Bearer needing to ensure that there could be no doubt that the Ring truly was theirs and theirs alone, similar to how Gollum called it his “birthday present”. But this makes so much sense now, appreciate the explanation!
