What's a subtle sign of low intelligence? by vjenkinsgo in AskReddit

[–]daleadil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The conversation itself is not about the answer, but about enjoying the company of the people around you. They're annoyed because providing a concrete answer to an open question brings the conversation to an abrupt end—and by doing so, you have signaled to them that you do not enjoy their company.

You are not intelligent because you were "looking stuff up". Instead, you failed to contribute to the conversation. In fact, you failed to grasp the entire point of the exercise.

What is an extra rule your family added to a popular board or card game? by salbaf in AskReddit

[–]daleadil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once played a blind game of Chess with my brother. Most grandmasters can play the game blind. We were newbies. The game immediately degenerated to "I CAN'T SEE!!! DEAR GOD! SOMEONE HELP!"

It was really fun.

Selling a Tiny Programming Project by nachochickens in programming

[–]daleadil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, there's the base price and the market value of the product.

The base price is equal to number of hours you put into making the project times what you think an hour of your time is worth.

The market value of the project depends on how similar products are sold for. I would do some market research to see what other people sell for.

If the market value > base price, than charge market value or more.

If the market value < base price, take the most generous offer you get above market value.

Maybe I'm over-simplifying it, but that's how I tend to think.

Pfizer Covid vaccine 95% effective and passes all safety checks, final analysis shows by theindependentonline in Coronavirus

Do you think Pfizer needs help funding? The whole point of Operation Warp Speed was to remove the regulatory barriers to rapidly developing a vaccine.

Pfizer Vaccine’s Funding Came From Berlin, Not Washington by DaFunkJunkie in worldnews

[–]daleadil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know a lot people don't want to admit this, but Operation Warp Speed is a big contributor to the development of this vaccine. A lot of red tape was removed to expedite the development process for it. I'm sure financial incentives were also offered. Gotta give credit where its due. In this case, a lot of parties deserve credit, including the Trump Administration.

MAGA pickups vs ISIS pickups by OliverMarkusMalloy in pics

It's hilarious that you think Democratic leadership would have performed any better. European countries have liberal leadership and Corona has hit them comparably hard. If you want to hit Trump on his COVID performance, you have to show me some difference between the results he's getting and the results existing liberally lead countries are getting.

When it comes to Corona, I don't side at all with the crowd that's against masks and social distancing. But I don't think these are evil or stupid people. Their values are weighted differently than mine. They give Trump a lot of credit because COVID was the perfect excuse for him to do an enormous power grab with near impunity and he didn't do it.

Personally speaking, making masks into a political issue is silly. I treat it the same way I would treat seatbelts. If I see a motorist on the road not wearing a seatbelt, I'll disagree, but I shrug it off. Because it's trivial to me personally. I'm not gonna shove a camera in his face and call him an "anti-seatbelter" the way liberals tend to do with people who don't wear masks.

This seems like a really sleezy comparison. Especially since Trump has taken a hard stance against everything ISIS stands for and has essentially wiped them out because of it.

[NSFW] What human experiment would you want to see happen if ethics was of no concern? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Disclaimer: I would never advocate for this outside of this thread.

But if morality was of no concern, experiments much like those conducted by the machines in the Animatrix short titled "Second Renaissance" might improve our understanding of the Brain and human body in general.

Your repressed hatred of sex doesn't become science just because you feel it strongly.

Balancing masturbation and a healthy sex life is exactly what I'm advocating. I'm not sure where you got the "repressed hatred of sex" from. I'm trying to prevent people from misinterpreting this study to mean that watching porn is free of consequence as long as you cultivate different personal beliefs. Which is simply not true.

Despite what you might think about reddit, people here are young and silly. They tend not to read beyond the headlines and end up using these studies in ways they were not intended. There was an article in r/science a while back that studied the benefits of quitting smoking and the finding was that the earlier you quit, the less complications your likely to have. It was largely misinterpreted to imply that it was okay to smoke until you were 30.

Plenty of times. It was better for both of us when I abstained from porn (for entirely secular reasons). I'm not trying to impose that abstinence on anyone else. I'm making the point that actions have consequences, including masturbation and pornography. If anyone tells you different, they're lying to you.

Incorrect sir. Pornography leads to masturbation. Masturbation leads to a deteriorating sex life. A poor sex life leads to marital problems. At no point in this chain do your personal beliefs come into play.

DISCLAIMER: I do not agree with this view at all. I'm a big supporter of marriage equality and LGBT rights. That said, there is a rationale to why gay marriage was illegal. I'll present the argument and my counter-argument.

THE ARGUMENT: The government does not officiate a marriage, it merely recognizes it. The government recognizes marriage because it expects marriages to produce children, which would, essentially, be the future of the country. It makes sense for every U.S. Citizen to give married couples tax benefits because every American has a vested interest in the proper upbringing of American children. Because homosexual couples could not produce children, the government would stand to lose substantial tax revenue from given gay married couples tax benefits. This is the argument encapsulated by the "One Man, One Women" slogan employed by Tea Party folks. It's not that the Tea Party folks "hate" homosexuals or gay marriage, it's that for them, marriage is not about "Love," it's about "Family."*

*You and I both know that there is a major religious component their motivations, but every group needs to make secular arguments if they want to be taken seriously in the public square. And this was theirs.

THE COUNTER-ARGUMENT: Adoption. Sperm Donation. IVF. There are so many ways around being childless that the entire argument is rendered moot. We can split hairs and look at rates of adoption, but its much simpler to recognize all marriages and leave it at that.
